Google promises seven years of operating-system and security updates for Pixel 8 and later phones, but that is a software-support window—not a promise that each phone will remain trouble-free or economical to repair for seven years. For Pixel 6 through Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold, Google lists five years of updates. Both periods are counted from the phone’s first availability on the Google Store in the US, not from the day you buy it. Google’s current policy makes the distinction important: update eligibility can extend a phone’s useful life, but it cannot prevent physical wear or guarantee a smooth repair experience.
How long will a Google Pixel get updates?
Google’s current policy divides eligible Pixel phones into two support groups. The period begins when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US.
| Pixel models | Update-support period | What the period covers |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years | OS and security updates |
| Pixel 6 through Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold | Five years | OS and security updates |
These are eligibility periods, not a promise that every owner receives each release on the same date. Google says updates can include operating-system changes, security improvements, bug fixes, and features. Rollouts are gradual, may vary by device and carrier, and can take a few weeks. Check Google’s Pixel update page for a specific model’s policy and update status.

When it introduced Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in October 2023, Google said it would provide seven years of software support, including Android OS upgrades, security updates, and ongoing Feature Drops. The announcement also said parts would be available for seven years. Google’s announcement is the source for that original commitment; the current support periods for other models are set out on Google’s policy page.

A long update commitment is useful because it can keep a supported phone eligible for security fixes and software changes well beyond the shorter support windows common to older devices. But “supported” does not mean every new feature will necessarily work identically on every model, nor does it guarantee that a phone’s battery, display, charging hardware, or other components will last for the whole period.
Why seven years of updates may not mean seven years of use
Software support and physical condition are different things
Updates address software, not battery aging or physical damage. A phone can remain eligible for updates while its battery capacity declines, a component fails, or repair becomes impractical for its owner. The seven-year figure should therefore be read as the span of Google’s stated update commitment, not as a predicted service life for each handset.

Updates can fix problems, but maintenance does not guarantee a bug-free phone
Google continues to issue patches, and those patches can address problems as they emerge. A June 2026 Android Central report described fixes in Google’s June security update for display, camera, charging, and other issues across Pixel models, while noting that some problems had continued across recent updates. That is evidence of ongoing maintenance; it does not show that the support policy itself causes failures or establish how common any issue is.

A September 16, 2025 Android Central report covered user reports of swollen batteries in Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones and inconsistent support outcomes. It said Google had not issued an official statement on those newer reports at the time of publication. The reporting does not establish a representative failure rate, so it cannot show how often the issue occurs across Pixel 7 phones—or across the Pixel range.
The available reports provide no independently verified statistic for the share of Pixel phones that remain usable for seven years, no comparative failure rate, and no quantified rate for the Pixel 7 battery complaints. Individual reports can alert owners to a potential concern, but they are not a measure of its prevalence.
What Google’s repair commitment does—and does not—tell owners
Google says it makes Pixel repair parts and tools publicly accessible and provides repair manuals and diagnostics. It also names uBreakiFix as an independent repair-provider partner. These are Google’s stated repair-support measures, described in its repair-policy article. They do not establish that a particular part is currently in stock, that repair is available in every location, or that a specific fix will cost an affordable amount.

- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]

For an individual phone, the practical value of a long update window depends partly on whether needed repairs are accessible and affordable. A supported phone with a worn battery may still be worth keeping if it can be repaired at a reasonable cost; a hardware failure or unavailable repair option can shorten its useful life even when updates remain eligible.

How to judge the promise for a phone you own or plan to buy
- Confirm the exact model and support end date. Use Google’s policy page rather than applying the Pixel 8 commitment to older models. Pixel 6 through Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold are in the five-year group; Pixel 8 and later are in the seven-year group.
- Account for when support starts. Google counts from first US Google Store availability. Buying a model later does not restart its support clock.
- Consider the phone’s condition. Battery health, damage, and the likelihood of a hardware repair matter alongside the remaining update period.
- Check repair access and cost locally. Google’s general statements about parts, tools, manuals, and repair partners are not a quote or a guarantee of local availability.
- Weigh remaining support against repair expense. A phone near the end of its update period may be a weaker repair investment than one with years of support left, but the decision also depends on repair cost and the device’s condition.
The Pixel promise is meaningful: eligible models have defined multi-year OS and security support. Its limit is equally important. It describes Google’s software commitment, not a guarantee that every handset will survive, stay bug-free, or be inexpensive to maintain for that long.
