Samsung committed the Galaxy S23 series to four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. Since the S23 launched with Android 13, Android 17 is the expected last major Android version. The five-year security commitment points to roughly February 2028, but Samsung has not announced one exact final patch date for every model, country, and carrier.
Those are two different timelines: the phone is expected to stop receiving major Android-version upgrades before its security-update period ends. Samsung still lists the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra in its monthly security-update scope; monthly scheduling does not mean every device gets a patch on the same date.
What Samsung promised for the Galaxy S23
Samsung’s February 2023 announcement for the Galaxy S23 series specifies four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. That model-specific commitment is the clearest basis for estimating how long the phones will be supported. Samsung also cautioned that availability and timing may vary by model and market.

Counting five years from that launch gives an approximate security-support horizon of February 2028. It is an estimate from the duration Samsung stated—not a published last-update date. Rollout timing, regional versions, and carrier arrangements mean there is no single final-patch date established here for every S23.

Samsung’s broader February 9, 2022 policy announcement described up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for selected devices. The later, model-specific S23 announcement is the more direct commitment to use for this phone. In both cases, the wording concerns an eligible support window; it does not specify that all devices receive each update at the same time.
Android upgrades and security updates are not the same
An Android OS upgrade changes the phone’s major Android version. A security update delivers fixes intended to address security vulnerabilities; it does not necessarily move the phone to a new Android version. Samsung’s commitment gives the S23 different durations for these two kinds of updates.
| Update type | Samsung’s S23 commitment | What that means for the S23 |
|---|---|---|
| Android OS upgrades | Four generations | The S23 launched with Android 13, making Android 17 the expected final major version under the commitment. |
| Security updates | Five years | The duration points to approximately February 2028, based on the February 17, 2023 availability date; Samsung does not state one final patch date for all variants. |
The distinction matters when deciding whether an older phone is still supported. Reaching the expected final Android version would not, by itself, mean the security-update commitment had also ended. Conversely, receiving a security patch does not mean another major Android upgrade is due.

Put another way, Android 13 is the version the S23 arrived with, and the four promised upgrade generations point to Android 14, 15, 16, and 17. That count explains the Android 17 expectation; it is not a rollout calendar. The security-update promise runs on a separate, longer clock and is expressed in years rather than a specific number of Android versions.
Will the Galaxy S23 get Android 17?
Android 17 is the expected final major Android upgrade for the S23 series: Android 13 was its launch version, and Samsung promised four generations of OS upgrades. Samsung Knox’s compatibility information also lists Android 17 as the OS ceiling for the S23 Ultra. That Knox listing corroborates the ceiling for that model; it should not be treated as a separate guarantee of identical rollout timing for every S23 variant and market.
The expectation of Android 17 is based on Samsung’s upgrade-generation commitment and the phone’s launch version. It does not establish the date Android 17 will arrive on a particular device. Samsung says availability and timing can vary, so a rollout may not reach all models, countries, or carriers at once.
Samsung’s S23 announcement described the goal as sustaining the series’ premium experience through “four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates.” That wording captures the practical point: the commitment includes both major-version upgrades and security support, but those are distinct promises with different durations.
How long will S23 security patches continue?
The five-year commitment, counted from the series’ February 2023 availability, points to roughly February 2028 for the security-support horizon. Samsung’s public S23 commitment does not identify a universal final patch date. Avoid treating February 2028 as a guaranteed date on which every S23 stops receiving updates: an individual model’s final rollout can depend on its version and distribution arrangements.

Samsung’s Knox information gives the S23 Ultra a January 2028 security maintenance guarantee. That is model-specific corroboration, not proof that all S23 models share an identical endpoint. It also does not replace Samsung’s broader S23-series announcement or establish a precise final patch date for every market.
The January 2028 Knox date and the approximately February 2028 estimate from the five-year series commitment should not be collapsed into one exact end date. They come from different descriptions of support, and the Knox entry applies specifically to the S23 Ultra. For an individual phone, Samsung’s model- and market-specific update information is more useful than assuming a single final patch date applies across the entire series.
Is the Galaxy S23 still receiving monthly updates?
Samsung’s current security-update scope lists the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra under monthly security-update models. This describes the update category Samsung assigns to the phones, not a promise that each phone will receive every monthly patch on the same day.
Samsung says it releases monthly, quarterly, and biannual firmware updates for selected devices. Timing can differ by device version, model, or service version, and some carriers may use a different cadence for applicable models. A delay on one phone therefore does not by itself establish that the entire S23 series has lost support.
Monthly scope is best read as the planned cadence category, not as a delivery guarantee or a fixed date on the calendar. A patch may appear at different times across markets and carrier versions. If your phone has not received an update that another S23 has, first compare the exact model and distribution circumstances rather than inferring that support has ended.
A dated update example: international model SM-S911B
Samsung’s update history for the international Galaxy S23 model SM-S911B listed Android 16 with the September 5, 2026 security patch level. The record showed a release date of September 28, 2026. This is a dated example for that specific model, not a current-status guarantee for every S23 device. Samsung notes that changes can differ by model, country, and service provider.
Use the example to distinguish the patch level from the release date: the patch level identifies the security update represented in the record, while the release date identifies when that listed build was released. Neither date establishes when another regional or carrier version received the corresponding update.
It is also a snapshot, not a prediction of the next update. As of October 13, 2026, the listed Android 16 version and September 2026 patch level show the status recorded for SM-S911B in that entry. They do not establish the status of every S23, nor do they change the longer-term Android 17 and security-support expectations.

How to check your own S23’s update status
Because update records depend on the exact variant and distribution channel, check the phone itself rather than assuming another S23’s status applies to yours. Menu wording can vary by software version and region.
- Open Settings and check About phone for the model name and model number. Record those details before comparing the device with an update-history entry.
- In Settings, open Software update, then choose Download and install if that option is shown. The phone will check whether an update is available to that device.
- Review the installed Android version and security patch level in the phone’s software information. Compare those details with an update record only when the model, country, and service provider are a reasonable match.
- If no update appears, check again later rather than concluding that support has ended. Rollout timing can vary, and the monthly category does not mean simultaneous delivery.
If a record for another model shows a newer patch, that alone does not prove the phone is missing an update: it may reflect a different model variant, market, or carrier schedule. The most useful comparison is with a record for the same model and distribution circumstances.
When comparing records, keep the model number, country, and service-provider version together. A record for the international SM-S911B is useful context, for example, but not a substitute for a matching record for a carrier or regional variant. The installed patch level tells you what is on the phone; a matching update-history entry can help explain whether a newer build has been listed for that version.
What the timeline means if you plan to keep or buy one
If you already own an S23
The stated support window gives the phone a longer security-update period than its expected major-version-upgrade period. If your deciding factor is whether it should receive Android 17, the policy points to yes as the expected final major upgrade. If your deciding factor is security support, use roughly February 2028 as the policy-based horizon, not as an exact final-patch appointment. Check your specific phone’s patch level and update availability for its actual rollout status.
For a keep-or-replace decision, separate the question “Will it receive another major Android version?” from “Will it continue receiving security updates?” The first has an expected endpoint in Android 17 under the four-generation commitment; the second extends to an approximate five-year horizon. Neither answer tells you precisely when an update will arrive on your own device.
If you are considering a used S23
Ask for the model number and inspect the installed Android version and security patch level before purchase. The series-wide commitment describes Samsung’s policy; it does not guarantee that a particular used phone has installed every update or that its carrier or regional version will follow the same schedule as another unit. A recent patch level can help establish what is installed, but it cannot guarantee the timing of future rollouts.
Do not treat a seller’s statement that the phone is “up to date” as a substitute for checking the installed patch level. Then compare it with information for the same model and distribution version where possible. The five-year commitment is a support policy, not evidence about the update history of a specific used handset.

- It does establish: Samsung’s stated commitment of four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates for the S23 series.
- It supports as an expectation: Android 17 as the final major Android version, given the Android 13 launch version and four upgrade generations.
- It estimates: a security-support horizon around February 2028, calculated from the February 2023 availability date and five-year commitment.
- It does not establish: one exact last security-patch date shared by every S23 model, market, and carrier, or a single rollout day each month.
For a particular phone, its model number, installed patch level, and available update are more informative than a series-wide date alone. Samsung’s commitment describes the support window; the phone’s update screen and matching model-specific records show what has reached that unit.

The shortest reliable answer is therefore two-part: expect four major Android upgrades, with Android 17 as the final one, and expect security updates for about five years from the February 2023 launch. The first endpoint is a version expectation; the second is an approximate time horizon. Neither should be mistaken for a promise that every S23 variant will receive its final update on one shared date.

Samsung’s security scope lists the S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra in its monthly update category. That does not mean every model or carrier variant receives each patch on the same day.
Why does my S23 have an older patch than another S23?
Update timing can vary by model, device or service version, country, and carrier. Check your model number and patch level, then compare them with an update record for a matching variant; a different model’s newer patch does not by itself show that your support has ended.
Does Android 17 mean security updates end at the same time?
No. The expected Android 17 endpoint follows from the four-generation OS-upgrade promise. Security updates have a separate five-year commitment, with an approximate horizon around February 2028.
The Bottom Line
Samsung’s commitment points to Android 17 as the Galaxy S23’s expected final major Android upgrade and roughly February 2028 as the security-support horizon. The latter is approximate, not a universal last-patch date. Check your exact model and installed patch level because rollout timing can differ by market and carrier.
