As of October 16, 2026, both M2 MacBook Air models are supported by macOS Tahoe 26. Apple has not published a guaranteed final-support year for either the 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022) or the 15-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2023). The practical answer is that they should receive major macOS releases and security updates for several more years, but every longer-range estimate is a forecast, not a promise.

What Apple supports right now

Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26 compatibility page, published or revised on September 14, 2026, lists both relevant M2 models:

  • MacBook Air (M2, 2022)
  • MacBook Air (15-inch, M2, 2023)

The page uses the broad statement, “You can install macOS Tahoe 26 on any of these Mac models.” Apple’s Tahoe upgrade guidance also describes compatibility as covering MacBook Air models with Apple silicon introduced in 2020 or later. That confirms current eligibility; it does not establish how many future macOS releases remain.

macOS Tahoe 26 first appeared in Apple’s security index with a September 15, 2025 release date. The same index records Tahoe updates in August and September 2026. Those entries demonstrate that a Mac on a supported major release continues to receive maintenance after the initial launch, including security fixes and other updates.

What “macOS updates” includes

People often use “updates” to mean three different things. Separating them makes Apple’s support position easier to understand.

Major macOS upgrades

A major upgrade changes the macOS version number, such as moving to Tahoe 26 from the preceding release. Apple publishes a new compatibility list for each major version. A model can be eligible for one release and excluded from the next, so eligibility must be checked annually rather than inferred from the Mac’s age alone.

Minor updates within the current release

Apple issues updates to the current major version during its support period. These can correct bugs, improve reliability, and address compatibility problems without changing the major version. A Mac that can install Tahoe 26 should be able to receive the Tahoe maintenance releases that Apple makes available for supported hardware.

Security updates

Security maintenance is recorded separately in Apple’s security-release index. Tahoe’s entries through 2026 show that supported Macs continue receiving security attention after a major release begins. The index does not promise a fixed number of years for an individual model, however, and it should not be treated as a lifetime schedule.

Why Apple does not give a final support year

Apple’s cited support documents list compatible models for a particular macOS release. They do not publish a table saying that an individual MacBook Air is guaranteed updates until a specified calendar year. Consequently, no official source establishes a final macOS-support date for the M2 Air.

This distinction matters when you see a precise claim such as “the M2 Air is supported through 2030.” Unless Apple has published that date for the specific model and release, it is an estimate. Hardware age, operating-system requirements, and Apple’s future compatibility decisions can change the outcome. The defensible statement today is narrower: Tahoe 26 supports the M2 Air, and support is likely to continue for several more years, with confidence decreasing as future annual compatibility lists have not yet been published.

A realistic forecast, without a false guarantee

The following framework describes what can reasonably be said on October 16, 2026. It is a planning aid, not an Apple commitment.

Period What is established How certain is it?
2026–2027 The M2 Air is eligible for macOS Tahoe 26 and its 2026 maintenance releases. High: Apple has listed the models and is publishing Tahoe security updates.
Following annual macOS release The M2 Air may remain eligible, but Apple’s next compatibility list is required to know. Moderate to low: no future list or model-specific promise is published.
Several years beyond Tahoe 26 Continued major-version and security support is a reasonable forecast, not a date certain. Declining: each additional year depends on a new Apple decision.

For a purchase decision, “several more years” is a useful expectation only when you accept the uncertainty. Do not convert it into a guaranteed end year, resale claim, or contract-like promise.

  1. Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  2. Select About This Mac. Note the model name, screen size, chip designation, and currently installed macOS version.
  3. Confirm that the machine is an M2 MacBook Air and record whether it is the 2022 model or the 15-inch 2023 model.
  4. Open Apple’s compatibility information for the macOS release you want to install.
  5. Search the list for the exact model wording. For Tahoe 26, the list includes “MacBook Air (M2, 2022)” and “MacBook Air (15-inch, M2, 2023).”
  6. Before starting the upgrade, make a current backup and leave enough free storage for the installer and temporary update files.

The first five steps answer eligibility. They do not predict the next release. Repeat the check whenever Apple publishes a new major version.

What happens when a future release drops the M2 Air?

Exclusion from a future major release would not automatically mean that the Mac stops working on the day of Apple’s announcement. It would remain on the newest macOS version Apple supports for that hardware, and Apple might continue publishing maintenance or security fixes for that release for some period. The exact duration is not fixed in the cited documents, so treat the compatibility list and security index as separate checks.

Applications can also set their own minimum macOS requirements. A Mac may be secure and usable on its final supported release while a particular new application requires a later system. That is a software-compatibility issue, not evidence that Apple has published a different support date for the hardware.

Is an M2 MacBook Air still worth buying for software support?

For a buyer in late 2026, the M2 Air’s strongest evidence is current eligibility: both sizes run Tahoe 26. The decision should weigh that confirmed status against the price difference for a newer Apple-silicon Mac and how long you expect to keep the computer.

Buying question How to evaluate an M2 Air What remains unknown
Current major-version eligibility Confirmed for macOS Tahoe 26 for the 2022 and 15-inch 2023 models. Eligibility for the next major release and later versions.
Remaining useful support Several more years is a reasonable, dated forecast. Apple has not guaranteed a final year.
Security coverage Tahoe security releases are documented through August and September 2026. How long Apple will maintain Tahoe for these models after future releases arrive.
Value versus a newer Mac Potentially attractive if the M2 price is substantially lower and Tahoe meets your software needs. The appropriate premium for newer hardware depends on the current seller, region, configuration, and price.

When the M2 Air is a sensible choice

  • You need a MacBook Air now and the M2 configuration is meaningfully cheaper than a newer generation.
  • Your applications support Tahoe 26 and you are comfortable checking compatibility each year.
  • You expect to replace the computer before uncertainty about later macOS releases becomes important.

When to favor a newer generation

  • You plan to keep the Mac for a long period and want to maximize the number of future compatibility decisions that are still ahead.
  • Your work depends on software that routinely raises its minimum macOS requirement.
  • The price gap is small enough that additional remaining support is worth paying for.

These are risk-management choices, not proof that one model has a guaranteed lifespan. Apple’s published compatibility list is the deciding evidence for each release.

How to plan around support uncertainty

For a new buyer

  1. Write down the exact model and configuration you are considering, including screen size and year.
  2. Check that model against the current macOS compatibility page.
  3. Compare the purchase price with a newer Apple-silicon generation, using the actual region and configuration you can buy.
  4. Estimate your replacement horizon. A two-year plan carries less future-support risk than a seven-year plan.
  5. Keep a backup and an installation plan for the latest supported macOS so that you are not forced to upgrade during a deadline.

For an existing owner

  1. Open Apple menu > About This Mac and record the installed version.
  2. Check Apple’s current compatibility list before each annual upgrade.
  3. Review the security-release index for the version you are running.
  4. Update promptly when the release is compatible and your backup is current.
  5. If a future release excludes the M2 Air, identify applications that require the newer system and plan a replacement based on those requirements rather than on a rumored date.

Common mistakes about M2 Air support

  • Confusing model year with support end date: “2022” identifies the model generation; it is not an Apple-published expiration year.
  • Assuming current eligibility guarantees the next release: Tahoe 26 support proves only what Apple has listed for Tahoe 26.
  • Treating security updates as a lifetime promise: The security index documents released updates, not a guaranteed future schedule for every Mac.
  • Using a precise forecast as a fact: A projected year must be labeled as an estimate and dated.
  • Ignoring the 15-inch model distinction: Apple lists the 15-inch M2 Air separately from the 2022 M2 Air, so verify the exact wording.

Bottom line for October 2026

The M2 MacBook Air is not at the end of its documented macOS life: Apple supports both the 2022 model and the 15-inch 2023 model on macOS Tahoe 26, and Tahoe is receiving security maintenance in 2026. Apple has not stated a final support year. Plan on several more years as a reasonable but non-guaranteed expectation, and revisit Apple’s compatibility page every year before making a long-term purchase or replacement decision.
