There is no single runtime: divide the battery’s usable energy in watt-hours by the refrigerator, router, and other devices’ average combined draw in watts. Then check that the inverter can handle their continuous and startup power needs. For example, 1,000 Wh of usable AC energy divided by a measured 100 W average load gives a simple estimate of 10 hours—not a guarantee, since reserve settings, conversion losses, changing loads, and inverter limits can reduce actual runtime.
What determines how long the battery will last?
Two specifications answer different questions. A battery’s energy capacity, commonly shown in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or watt-hours (Wh), describes how much energy it stores. Its power capacity, shown in kilowatts (kW) or watts (W), describes how quickly it can deliver that energy. A backup needs enough stored energy to last for the intended period and enough output to operate the connected appliances. The U.S. Department of Energy’s solar-storage guidance explains this distinction and notes that conversion from stored energy to household electricity involves losses (DOE: Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics).
The first-pass runtime equation is:
Estimated runtime in hours ≈ usable battery energy in Wh ÷ average combined load in W

Some stored energy may not be available to AC appliances because of system design, reserve settings, shutdown thresholds, or conversion losses. If the maker specifies usable AC energy, that figure is the most directly relevant starting point for plug-in AC devices. If it lists only nameplate capacity, look for the manufacturer’s explanation of usable capacity and AC output rather than treating the two values as interchangeable.

The load in the denominator is the average draw of everything operating from the battery, not just the refrigerator’s label rating. A refrigerator’s compressor cycles rather than drawing its running power constantly, and its consumption varies with conditions. A router and any additional devices add to the total. The quotient gives a planning estimate; by itself it does not account for load changes, startup behavior, inverter limits, or battery controls.
Estimate the refrigerator’s average consumption
Start with the refrigerator’s exact make and model. The DOE refrigerator and freezer energy-rating lookup can be searched by appliance type, brand, model, or year, and its guidance describes where to find the appliance nameplate (DOE refrigerator and freezer energy-rating lookup). A rating or estimate tied to the specific appliance is more useful than applying a single assumed refrigerator wattage to every household.
- Find the model details. Check the appliance nameplate or documentation for its brand, model, and year. Use those details to search the DOE lookup when a matching listing is available.
- Read the energy figure and its context. If the listing gives annual kWh, divide that figure by 365 to estimate average kWh per day. To convert that daily average to watts, multiply by 1,000 and divide by 24.
- Use a representative measurement if practical. An appliance energy meter can help estimate actual refrigerator consumption over a representative period. A short reading may not reflect longer-term operation because compressor cycles and conditions vary.
- Keep the limitation visible. An annual or daily average describes energy over time, not every instant of operation. It does not identify the refrigerator’s startup demand or guarantee its future use in different conditions.
As an illustration of why model-specific context matters, DOE’s lookup guidance gives an example of 537 kWh annually for an Amana freezer manufactured in 2000, assuming its seal is in good condition. That is a tool example—not a typical refrigerator value or a substitute for checking the actual appliance.

A separate DOE project page reports typical household refrigerator consumption of 1.5–2.0 kWh per day (U.S. Department of Energy, 2023) and notes that more than 100 million refrigerators are used in U.S. homes (DOE high-efficiency refrigerator project). Treat the consumption figure as a broad illustration from that page, not a prediction for a particular refrigerator or a current census of appliances. ENERGY STAR also notes that refrigerator use varies with such factors as room temperature, door openings, and how full the refrigerator is (ENERGY STAR refrigerator guidance).

Add the router and every other connected load
There is no single router wattage that applies to all models, and the sources cited here do not establish a standard figure. Check the router’s label or documentation, or measure its draw with a suitable plug-in meter. Use the same approach for other devices you intend to back up, such as a modem, phone charger, or lamp. Include only loads you expect to run at the same time, but do not omit a device simply because its draw seems small: every connected load consumes some of the battery’s available energy.
Make a simple load list before choosing a battery or promising yourself a runtime. For each device, note its estimated or measured average draw and how many hours it is expected to operate. If you have only energy figures for a period rather than watts, convert them to a common unit before combining them. The useful denominator is the average combined load for the operating pattern you actually plan to use—not necessarily the sum of every device’s maximum label rating, and not an unsupported guess.
- Refrigerator: use a model-specific annual estimate or a representative measured consumption to derive an average.
- Router and modem: use their labels or measured draw; do not substitute a universal router figure.
- Other essentials: list each device, its draw, and whether it will be on continuously or only part of the time.
- Changing use: identify loads that may be added during an outage, since they change the combined average and shorten the estimate.
Work through a runtime estimate
Suppose a battery provides 1,000 Wh of usable AC energy and the measured average combined load for the refrigerator, router, and other selected essentials is 100 W. The simple calculation is 1,000 Wh ÷ 100 W = 10 hours. This is arithmetic for a hypothetical household, not a product test or a guarantee. It does not include a further adjustment for reserve settings, changing loads, or other system limits.

For a different load profile, keep the same equation and replace the example values with your own battery’s usable-energy specification and measured or estimated average draw. For instance, if you decide to turn off optional devices, the combined average may fall; if you add lights or charging, it will rise. Do not infer a precise number of hours from a battery capacity alone: without the load, that division cannot be completed.

When comparing estimates, make the assumptions explicit: usable energy, which devices are included, the average load used, and whether the figure is a calculated estimate or a manufacturer’s runtime under specified conditions. This avoids confusing an energy-capacity number with a runtime claim, or applying a runtime measured for one load to a different set of appliances.
Check output and startup capability, not only energy
A battery can have enough energy on paper yet still fail to operate a load if its inverter cannot supply the required power. Check the system’s continuous AC output against the appliances expected to run simultaneously. Also check any stated surge capability and its duration when the manufacturer provides those specifications. Startup demand can differ from a device’s normal operating draw, particularly for a refrigerator with a compressor.
The sources cited here do not establish a single refrigerator startup-surge figure, so there is no reliable generic surge number to apply to an unspecified model. Consult the refrigerator and battery documentation, or ask the system supplier or a qualified installer to verify that the inverter can support the intended appliance. A runtime calculation based on average watts does not answer this separate compatibility question.
Also read the battery’s operating limits. A reserve setting may hold some stored energy back, while a shutdown threshold may stop output before the nominal capacity is exhausted. The effect depends on the particular system, so use its stated usable capacity and configuration rather than applying a made-up universal percentage loss.

Portable power station or installed home battery?
The phrase “home battery backup” can refer to different equipment. A portable power station is generally used for selected plug-in loads; an installed residential battery can be wired to selected circuits or a wider set of household loads, depending on its design. Their runtime estimates rely on the same energy-and-load arithmetic, but the connection and outage behavior differ.
| System type | What to verify | Why it affects the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Portable power station | Usable Wh, continuous AC output, any stated surge rating and duration, available outlets, charging method, and conditions behind any stated runtime. | It serves the devices connected to it; the load and usable energy determine the estimate, while output and surge limits determine whether those devices can run. |
| Installed residential battery | Usable energy, inverter output, wiring and transfer/islanding arrangement, supported circuits, reserve settings, and the loads included in the system design. | Installation configuration determines which household loads can receive power during an outage and whether the system can operate independently of the grid. |
| Appliance energy meter | Whether it can measure the appliance and connection type you intend to use, and whether the observation period represents ordinary use. | It can refine a load estimate but does not replace model-specific rating information or guarantee future runtime. |
For a fair comparison between two battery systems, hold the assumed load profile constant and compare usable energy, continuous output, surge output and duration if specified, conversion losses, supported circuits, and outage behavior. A larger kWh value does not by itself establish a longer runtime if the usable portion or the load differs.

A home with rooftop solar is not necessarily able to use that solar electricity during a grid outage. DOE says rooftop photovoltaic systems generally switch off when grid power is lost, and independent operation requires suitable inverter configuration and storage. Its Solar and Resilience Basics guidance states: “For solar panels to produce power on their own, they need two things: a properly configured inverter and a storage system.” (DOE Solar and Resilience Basics)

Common reasons a calculated runtime may not match reality
- Nameplate capacity was used instead of usable energy. Recalculate with the manufacturer’s usable figure, preferably for AC output if the loads plug into AC outlets.
- Only the refrigerator was counted. Add the router, modem, and every other device drawing from the battery during the same period.
- An average was treated as a fixed draw. Refrigerator use and the connected load pattern vary, so an average cannot show each compressor cycle or capture every later change in use.
- Output limits were overlooked. Compare the inverter’s continuous output and stated surge capability with the simultaneous running and startup needs.
- The system’s reserve or shutdown behavior was ignored. Use the configured usable capacity and check the manufacturer’s operating documentation.
- Solar backup was assumed from panel ownership alone. Verify grid-disconnection and islanding capability, suitable inverter configuration, storage, and supported loads.
If the estimate is unexpectedly short, first check that the battery’s displayed or configured energy figure is usable energy, then audit which loads were actually connected and whether the devices ran as expected. Compare the measured battery output or runtime with the same period’s device use, and consult the system documentation for conversion, reserve, and cutoff behavior. Avoid using a new generic wattage estimate to explain a system-specific result.
What to know before choosing a battery for essentials
Decide what “essentials” means for your household and how long you need them to run. A refrigerator and router alone create one load profile; adding lights, communications equipment, or other appliances creates another. Use the intended duration to calculate the energy requirement from the combined average load, then check that the candidate system’s usable energy meets it with the actual reserve and operating conditions in mind.
Evaluate power separately. Confirm continuous output for the devices that may operate together, and check startup support for the refrigerator using the appliance and battery specifications. For an installed battery, confirm which circuits are backed up and how the system enters outage operation. For a portable unit, verify that the necessary appliances can be connected as intended. These are different checks: capacity estimates duration, while output and configuration determine whether the load can be served at all.
The exact runtime for a particular home remains a calculation that requires its own usable battery energy, refrigerator model or measured use, router draw, other connected loads, and system setup. Until those inputs are known, the responsible answer is a method and an explicitly qualified estimate rather than a universal number of hours.
