There is no reliable, universal number of years after which every cordless vacuum battery should be replaced. Battery life depends on the vacuum, how it is used and stored, and its condition. Replace it when runtime has fallen substantially in ordinary use and the vacuum’s maintenance needs have been ruled out—not just because the battery is a certain age. Before buying one, check the exact model, its warning indicators and warranty.

Why there is no single battery-life figure

A cordless vacuum battery gradually loses performance, but manufacturers do not give one calendar replacement interval that applies across models. Dyson says battery life is not defined by a set number of years. LG likewise says it does not recommend a specific replacement period for the CordZero A9 because use and environment vary. Those statements are a better guide than treating a general lithium-ion estimate as a promise about every vacuum.

Battery age is only one part of the picture. How often the vacuum is used, how much time it spends in its highest-power mode, its storage conditions and maintenance can all affect its runtime over time. A vacuum used mostly in a normal mode and cared for according to its manual may behave differently from the same model used frequently in Max or Boost. The battery’s condition matters more than a calendar birthday by itself.

Published cycle figures are also model-specific. LG’s figures for its CordZero A9 and A7 describe different products and different signals; neither sets an industry-wide threshold. A broad estimate for lithium-ion batteries can offer context, but it is not a cordless-vacuum specification.

Calendar years and charge cycles are different ways of describing use, and one cannot be converted reliably into the other without knowing how often and how the vacuum is charged. Even cycle definitions and what a manufacturer means by “battery life” may differ. For example, LG defines a cycle for the A7 indicator as a full charge followed by a full discharge. That detail belongs to its A7 guidance; it is not a universal way to assess every vacuum.

What the published figures actually mean

Guidance What it applies to How to interpret it
500 full charge-discharge cycles to 80% of initial battery life LG USA’s CordZero A9 guidance, published in 2025. LG CordZero A9 battery performance A model-specific performance example, not a recommended replacement date or cycle limit for all vacuums. LG says usage and environment vary and gives no fixed replacement period.
More than 650 charging cycles LG USA’s CordZero A7 indicator guidance, published in 2026. LG CordZero A7 LED indicators For this model, a red battery LED indicates that the battery has reached end of lifespan and needs replacement. LG defines one cycle as fully charged to fully discharged.
Two to three years or 300 to 500 charge cycles, whichever comes first DEWALT’s 2024 estimate for lithium-ion batteries generally. DEWALT battery-lifetime guidance Broad context only: this is not a cordless-vacuum-specific lifespan claim and should not be used as a replacement schedule for a vacuum.

“80% of initial battery life” is LG’s stated CordZero A9 measure; it should not be recast as a universal runtime guarantee or as the point at which every owner must replace a battery. Likewise, the A7’s red light and cycle figure belong to that model. Another vacuum may use a different indicator—or none at all—so check its manual or manufacturer support page rather than applying LG’s threshold elsewhere.

These figures also measure different things: LG’s A9 statement describes remaining battery life after a stated number of cycles, while the A7 guidance links a warning light to end of lifespan. DEWALT’s estimate is broader guidance for lithium-ion batteries generally, not a vacuum test. Comparing the numbers as though they were competing claims about the same vacuum would be misleading.

When reduced runtime points to a battery problem

A sustained, noticeable drop in runtime during ordinary cleaning is a practical reason to investigate the battery. Dyson identifies reduced runtime when the machine is not in Max mode as a typical replacement sign. A short run in Max or Boost alone is less conclusive: those modes are intended for intensive bursts, and frequent high-power use can speed battery degradation.

Compare like with like before drawing a conclusion. Use the same normal power mode and a similar cleaning task, and pay attention to whether the change persists across uses. A one-off short session does not establish that the battery has failed. A warning light or message specified for your model can provide additional evidence; use the manufacturer’s instructions to interpret it.

Short runtime is not automatically proof of battery wear. A dirty filter, blockage or other maintenance issue can affect operation. Clean and inspect the vacuum as its manual directs before paying for a battery. If runtime remains substantially reduced after those checks, battery replacement or manufacturer service becomes a more plausible next step.

When comparing sessions, note whether you used the same power setting and did a similar task. A session with more intensive cleaning or more time in Max or Boost is not a fair comparison with ordinary-mode cleaning. The goal is not to produce a laboratory measurement; it is to see whether a persistent change remains under broadly similar conditions after routine maintenance.

How to decide whether to replace the battery

  1. Measure ordinary-use runtime. Charge the vacuum as its instructions specify, select a normal mode rather than Max or Boost, and note how long it operates during a representative cleaning task. Compare with your own earlier experience under similar conditions; do not assume a figure from another model is the correct benchmark.
  2. Check the vacuum before blaming the battery. Inspect for blockages and clean the filters and other user-serviceable parts as the manual instructs. If a maintenance warning is present, address it first. Then reassess runtime in the same power mode.
  3. Read model-specific warnings. Look up the exact model’s indicator meanings in its manual or the manufacturer’s support material. The LG CordZero A7’s red battery LED is a documented end-of-life signal for that model; it is not a universal battery warning.
  4. Check warranty coverage. Find the warranty terms for your model, purchase region and circumstances before ordering parts or paying for service. Dyson’s US battery-care page says its two-year cordless machine and parts warranty includes the battery, but that statement is not a guarantee of coverage for every model, country or case.
  5. Choose the correct repair route. Confirm whether the battery is intended to be replaced by the owner or whether the manufacturer directs owners to service. Use the exact model number when checking replacement guidance; do not assume a battery that looks similar will fit or work.
  6. Dispose of the old battery correctly. Follow the manufacturer’s removal instructions and the battery-disposal rules that apply where you live. Dyson advises removing the battery before disposal and recycling it in accordance with local ordinances or regulations.

There is no need to treat a single short runtime or a number of years as a verdict. The useful sequence is to check performance in a normal mode, address maintenance, consult the warning information for the exact model, then look at warranty and replacement options. If your manual does not make clear whether the battery is owner-replaceable, ask the manufacturer before attempting removal.

How to find a compatible replacement

Battery compatibility is model-specific. Check the vacuum’s model number on the appliance, label or documentation, then use the manufacturer’s parts page or support instructions to identify the approved replacement. Confirm the precise model or series in the listing before purchasing. A battery advertised for one cordless vacuum is not evidence that it fits another, even if the products share a brand or look alike.

The manufacturer examples illustrate why checking matters: Dyson’s cited replacement page is for the V7, while Philips lists battery part numbers for specified cordless series on its India support page. Those are examples, not a universal catalog. The Philips page applies to its stated series and regional support; owners elsewhere should check the parts information for their own market.

If the battery is not listed as user-replaceable, or the instructions are unclear, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider before opening the machine. Follow the product’s safety and repair instructions; do not improvise a fit based on voltage, connector shape or appearance alone. Verify the return policy and compatibility wording before purchase, especially when buying from a third-party seller.

Care practices that can help preserve runtime

Care guidance differs by manufacturer and model, so the manual for your vacuum takes precedence. Dyson recommends using Auto or Normal mode for everyday cleaning and reserving Max or Boost for intensive bursts. It also recommends storing the vacuum away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and allowing it to cool after use before reconnecting it to charge. These are Dyson’s recommendations, not a universal rule set for every vacuum.

Dyson gives 18°C–28°C as its recommended storage temperature. Treat that range as Dyson guidance rather than a target established for all cordless-vacuum batteries. The same care page advises allowing the battery to run down to empty at least once a month. Since charging and care advice can vary by model and battery chemistry, follow your own vacuum’s instructions instead of applying that advice indiscriminately.

These suggestions are about care, not a guarantee that a battery will retain its original runtime for a set period. Frequent high-power use and storage or operating conditions are among the factors Dyson identifies as relevant to battery life. Use the settings and charging practices in your model’s manual rather than assuming that a routine recommended for one brand is suitable for another.

Maintenance is part of battery diagnosis as well as general care. Keeping filters and airflow paths in the condition specified by the manual helps you avoid mistaking a maintenance problem for battery failure. If the vacuum continues to run for less time after maintenance, use its model-specific troubleshooting and warranty guidance to decide whether replacement or service is appropriate.

Warranty, service and battery recycling

Warranty terms depend on region, product and circumstances. Dyson’s current US battery-care guidance says its two-year warranty for cordless machines and parts includes the battery. Check the terms that apply to your own purchase before replacing a battery yourself, because coverage in one market does not establish coverage in another.

Battery removal and disposal instructions are also product- and location-dependent. Dyson advises removing the battery before disposing of the vacuum and recycling it according to local ordinances or regulations. Consult the manual and local waste authority for the requirements where you live; do not put a battery into ordinary rubbish if local rules require separate collection.

A practical rule of thumb

Do not replace a cordless vacuum battery just because it has reached a particular age or because a different brand publishes a cycle count. First compare runtime in a normal mode, rule out filter and blockage issues, and check your own model’s warning indicators. If the loss remains substantial, verify warranty coverage and get a replacement matched to the exact vacuum—or arrange manufacturer service if owner replacement is not specified.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a cordless vacuum battery last?

There is no dependable universal number of years. Dyson says its battery life is not defined by a set number of years, and LG says the CordZero A9 has no specific replacement period because usage and environment vary. Judge the battery by sustained runtime loss in ordinary use, model-specific warnings and the vacuum’s condition.

Does 500 charge cycles mean I need to replace my vacuum battery?

No. LG’s 500-cycle figure applies to the CordZero A9 and describes the battery gradually reaching 80% of its initial life. LG does not give that model a fixed replacement schedule. The figure is not a general threshold for other vacuums.

How can I tell whether short runtime is caused by the battery?

Compare runtime in a normal power mode during similar cleaning tasks. Check and clean filters, inspect for blockages, and follow the maintenance steps in your manual. If runtime remains substantially reduced, consult your model’s warning guidance and warranty information. A short run in Max or Boost by itself is less conclusive.

Can I use any replacement battery with my cordless vacuum?

No. Use the exact model number and the manufacturer’s replacement instructions to identify a compatible battery. Dyson’s cited replacement is for the V7, and Philips lists part numbers for specified series; neither example implies universal compatibility. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if owner replacement is unclear.

Does the battery warranty cover replacement?

It depends on the model, region and circumstances. Dyson’s US battery-care page says its two-year cordless machine and parts warranty includes the battery. Check the warranty terms for your own purchase before paying for a replacement or service.

How should I dispose of an old cordless vacuum battery?

Follow the vacuum maker’s removal instructions and local battery-disposal rules. Dyson advises removing the battery before disposal and recycling it according to local ordinances or regulations. Check your local waste authority for the requirements where you live.

The Bottom Line

There is no universal replacement age for a cordless vacuum battery. Check runtime in a normal mode, rule out maintenance problems, and use the warning guidance for your exact model. If the loss remains substantial, check warranty coverage and choose a model-matched replacement or manufacturer service. Follow the manual and local rules when removing and recycling the old battery.
