There is no single, reliable hour count for “the new PS5 action game” because the title is not identified. Several 2026 PlayStation announcements fit that description, and their structures are very different: one has a reported story estimate, one is built around replayable cooperative hunts, one uses repeat runs with permanent upgrades, and one has only an early-story demo length published.
Use the comparison below to match the game you mean before treating any number as a buying guide. The only reported campaign figure currently available is for Control Resonant; the other candidates should not be assigned invented totals.
Why the answer depends on the game name
“New PS5 action game” is a description, not a unique product. Official PlayStation announcements in 2026 identify several plausible candidates, including Control Resonant, Horizon Hunters Gathering, SAROS and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Their publishers describe different kinds of progression, so “how many hours is the main story?” does not mean the same thing for each one.

A run-based game may have no single finish line because deaths reset a run while upgrades carry forward. A live or post-launch structure can continue adding narrative after the initial campaign. Until you identify the title, any definitive answer would risk attaching one game’s runtime to another.

Current length and postgame information at a glance
| Game | Main-story information | Completionist or total-length information | What happens after or between story sections | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Control Resonant | Approximately 30 hours | Around 50 hours for completionists | Not stated in the cited length report | Reported July 2026 estimate attributed to lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov, not a guaranteed final runtime |
| Horizon Hunters Gathering | Not stated by Guerrilla’s cited announcement | Not stated by Guerrilla’s cited announcement | Replayable Machine Incursion and Cauldron Descent hunts; the story is described as continuing after launch | Official Guerrilla description |

These entries are not interchangeable. A demo duration is not a campaign estimate, and a repeatable activity or permanent-upgrade loop is not a promise of a particular number of story hours.
Control Resonant: the only reported hour estimate
Main-story estimate
A July 2026 TechTimes report says lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov described the main story as approximately 30 hours. That is the clearest runtime lead available for any of the likely titles, but it remains a reported estimate from an interview rather than a final, publisher-guaranteed specification.
“Approximately” matters. Final balancing, optional missions, difficulty choices, patches or a player’s pace can move an actual playthrough above or below an estimate. Treat the figure as planning guidance, not as a contractual completion time.
Completionist estimate
The same report places a completionist playthrough at around 50 hours. The article does not establish exactly which activities make up that additional time, so it should not be read as a promise that every optional objective will require a fixed number of hours.

How to use the estimate when deciding to buy
If this is the game you mean, the reported split gives you two useful planning ranges: a focused run aimed at the central story and a substantially longer run that pursues more of what the game offers. It does not answer whether there is an endless mode, a New Game Plus option or continuing narrative support; those details are not provided by the cited report. Wait for a final feature list if those systems are decisive for you.
Horizon Hunters Gathering: replayable hunts and a continuing story
Campaign length is not published
Guerrilla’s description presents a narrative campaign but does not give a campaign-hour estimate. There is therefore no defensible main-story number or completionist total to quote for this game.
What the postgame model looks like
The announcement names replayable Machine Incursion and Cauldron Descent hunts. Those activities are the clearest indication that play is intended to continue after a first story run, particularly for players who enjoy repeating encounters rather than stopping when the narrative credits roll.

Guerrilla also says that “its story doesn’t stop at launch.” That wording signals planned narrative continuation after the initial release. It does not specify an episode count, release schedule, amount of added story or whether every update will be free, so avoid converting the statement into a promised number of postgame hours.

Who should consider it at launch
This structure is a better fit for players who value repeatable hunts and ongoing story support than for buyers who require a known, finite campaign length before purchasing. If your priority is a measured single-player completion time, the announcement leaves that question open.
SAROS: a run-based experience rather than a fixed-hour campaign
Deaths change the world
Housemarque describes a design in which deaths change the world. That makes the game’s progression unlike a straight campaign where each failed attempt simply reloads the last checkpoint. A run can end while the broader state of the world evolves, so repeated attempts are part of the intended structure.
Permanent progression between runs
Resources and loadout upgrades persist, according to Housemarque. You can therefore make progress that survives a death and use that progress to approach later attempts differently. The announcement does not publish a main-story target, a completionist total or a maximum number of runs.
Why an hour count would mislead
For a game built around repeat runs, total playtime depends heavily on how many attempts a player makes, how much optional content is pursued and how long they continue improving a build. Without an official figure, presenting a single campaign number would imply a precision the announcement does not support. Expect a progression loop, not a stated “finish in X hours” guarantee.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword: what the demo can and cannot tell you
Confirmed release information
Capcom confirms that Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on PS5 on September 25, 2026. The cited announcement also describes a demo containing about 30 minutes of early story.
Why the demo duration is not the campaign length
The demo is a sample of the opening portion, not a measured projection of the full game. Multiplying that sample or treating it as representative would produce an unsupported campaign estimate. Capcom’s cited announcement does not state the full story length or a completionist total.
Postgame information
The same announcement does not state a postgame plan. It is therefore not possible to confirm from that source whether the finished game includes repeatable missions, a challenge mode, New Game Plus or additional story after the ending. Those details should come from a later official feature list or a review of the released version.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to identify which game a headline means
- Check the proper noun. Look for the full title in the page headline, URL, video description or store listing. “New PS5 action game” alone is not enough.
- Match the distinctive feature. A report mentioning a roughly 30-hour story and a longer completionist target points to Control Resonant. References to Machine Incursion, Cauldron Descent or a story continuing after launch point to Horizon Hunters Gathering. Language about deaths changing the world and persistent loadout upgrades points to SAROS. A September 25, 2026 PS5 date and an early-story demo point to Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
- Separate source types. An official announcement, an interview report and a demo listing carry different levels of certainty. The reported Control Resonant figure is an interview estimate; the other entries are publisher descriptions that omit a total runtime.
- Check the edition and date. Runtime can change as a game is patched or receives story expansions. Record whether a claim refers to the launch build, a later update or a planned feature.
- Do not infer missing numbers. A replayable mode proves replayability, not a specific amount of content. Persistent progression proves that runs connect, not that the campaign lasts a set number of hours.
What “how long” should mean for your purchase
Main story
This is the time needed to follow the central narrative to its ending while skipping most optional content. Only Control Resonant currently has a reported figure in the available material, and even that figure is approximate.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Completionist playtime
A completionist target normally implies pursuing substantially more than the critical path, but the available announcements do not define a checklist for each candidate. Do not assume that a publisher’s use of “replayable,” “persistent” or “continuing” translates directly into a completionist-hour total.
Postgame and replay value
Postgame content can mean repeatable hunts, additional runs with permanent upgrades or new story delivered after launch. Those models serve different players: one may reward mastery of encounters, another experimentation with builds, and another returning for new narrative chapters. Ask which model you prefer instead of relying on one headline number.
Is it worth buying at launch?
Buy at launch when the structure matches your priority
- Choose Control Resonant at launch if a reported approximately 30-hour central story and an around-50-hour completionist target fit your schedule, while accepting that the numbers are estimates.
- Choose Horizon Hunters Gathering if replayable cooperative hunts and a story designed to continue after launch matter more to you than a published campaign total.
- Choose SAROS if you enjoy repeated attempts, changing world states and upgrades that survive death; its appeal is the loop, not a stated fixed runtime.
- Choose Onimusha: Way of the Sword if its confirmed PS5 release and opening demo match what you want, but do not buy on the assumption that the demo length predicts the full campaign.
Wait for more information when length is non-negotiable
Delay a purchase if you need an official story-hour figure, a guaranteed amount of postgame content or a confirmed expansion schedule. For three of the four candidates, those details are not stated in the cited announcements. Waiting for a final feature list, launch notes or independent measurements avoids paying for a structure you did not intend to buy.
Bottom line
Confirm the game name before asking for a definitive runtime. Control Resonant is the only likely candidate with a reported numerical estimate: approximately 30 hours for the main story and around 50 hours for completionists, according to a July 2026 TechTimes report. Horizon Hunters Gathering emphasizes replayable hunts and continuing story content, SAROS is organized around repeat runs with permanent progression, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword has a short early-story demo but no published full length in the cited announcement.
