Plan on about 10 hours to finish the story in Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. A thorough cleanup run takes roughly 15–20 hours, with a TechRadar reviewer reporting about 16 hours for 100% completion on PS5 in 2025. Your result will vary with difficulty, deaths, exploration and assist settings. The campaign is mostly linear, but movement and combat upgrades open optional routes, so the fastest path to every collectible usually involves revisiting earlier stages after the first clear.
At-a-glance completion times
| Goal | Expected time | What the estimate represents |
|---|---|---|
| Story completion | About 10 hours | GamesRadar’s description of the main campaign, assuming a normal first playthrough rather than exhaustive exploration. |
| Broad 100% completion | About 15–20 hours | A practical range for collecting stage objectives, revisiting ability-gated paths and attempting optional challenges. |
| Named 100% reference | Around 16 hours | TechRadar reviewer estimate from a PS5 playthrough with a standard DualSense Wireless Controller, published in 2025. |
| Expert longplay video | 7:41:41 | The length of a complete route video; it is an edited-free demonstration by an expert and is not an average-player promise. |
No universal playtime figure has been published by the game’s publisher. The review-based numbers above are estimates, not guarantees: repeated deaths, optional exploration, chosen difficulty and assist settings can move the total in either direction.
How many levels are in Shinobi: Art of Vengeance?
GamesRadar describes a roughly ten-hour story spread across “a dozen or so levels.” A complete walkthrough uses 13 principal stage-area names. That list is best treated as a practical route for navigation and cleanup, not as a publisher-confirmed numbered stage count. Some areas include boss encounters, revisits or a secret-boss segment, which is why the number of names does not map perfectly to a simple one-level, one-boss structure.

What “100% completion” includes
Finishing the final story encounter and seeing the credits is not the same as clearing every completion objective. The detailed walkthrough route tracks four recurring categories: Elite Squads, Oboro Relics, Secrets and Ankou Rifts. Optional battle trials and rift portals also extend the replay loop. In practice, a 100% file means cleaning up these stage-by-stage objectives and the optional challenges associated with them.
Elite Squads
Elite Squads are tracked as their own objective type in the walkthrough route. They are not simply a synonym for ordinary enemies defeated during a story run, so a player who rushes from one checkpoint to the next can finish the campaign while leaving squad objectives incomplete.
Oboro Relics
Oboro Relics are collectible objectives placed through the stage route. Their presence is one reason a first completion and a full completion diverge: reaching the end of a level does not confirm that every relic in earlier rooms was collected.
Secrets
Secrets cover hidden discoveries that are easy to miss when you follow the most direct route. Treat a stage as unfinished until its completion display and your own checklist show that the secret category has been resolved.

Ankou Rifts and optional trials
Ankou Rifts are portal-style challenges tracked by the walkthrough. Optional battle trials and rift portals provide additional combat tests beyond the story path. They are part of the broader cleanup route, so a player pursuing every available completion marker should budget time for attempts, retries and mastery rather than only for collectible pickup.
Do you need to replay levels for collectibles?
Usually, yes. You can reach the ending on a mostly linear first run, but returning later is the efficient way to collect items and clear routes that were inaccessible earlier. The game’s movement and combat abilities unlock access to previously blocked or impractical paths. Once those abilities are available, earlier stages can be revisited for relics, secrets, Elite Squads and rift objectives.
The official manual states that the map shows stage completion and supports fast-travel checkpoints. Nintendo Life also confirms that completion percentages are visible on the world map. Use those percentages as a progress audit rather than relying on memory: a stage that feels finished may still have a missed branch or challenge.
Why a single sweep is inefficient
- Some routes are designed around abilities you do not yet have on the first visit.
- Searching every side path while still learning enemy patterns increases deaths and backtracking.
- Optional trials and rifts can require repeated attempts that interrupt the pace of a story-focused run.
- Fast-travel checkpoints make a later targeted cleanup pass less wasteful than repeatedly stopping the campaign to search every room.
A practical route for finishing the game
1. Complete a focused story run
Choose the difficulty and assist settings you can play comfortably, then prioritize learning movement, combat timing and boss patterns. Follow the main route and collect obvious items, but do not assume that forcing every suspicious path immediately is the fastest strategy. This approach keeps a first completion close to the roughly ten-hour story estimate.

2. Record missed objectives as you go
When a branch appears to require an unavailable ability, note the stage and move on. The world map’s completion percentage gives you an objective signal after the stage, while a simple personal list prevents you from revisiting locations at random.
3. Return after upgrades are unlocked
Use the map and fast-travel checkpoints to revisit low-percentage stages first. Search the newly reachable paths for Oboro Relics and Secrets, then handle Elite Squads and any combat challenge that remains. Because the route is now familiar, you can spend your time on the missing objective instead of relearning the entire level.
4. Finish rifts and battle trials
Leave Ankou Rifts, optional battle trials and other demanding encounters for a cleanup phase if they disrupt your first clear. Their retries are easier to manage when the campaign route and your full ability set are already established.

How difficulty and assists change the clock
The official manual lists four choices: Shinobi, Apprentice, Novice and Custom. It also lists assist options. These settings affect how often you die, how much time you spend retrying difficult encounters and how aggressively you can explore. The published time ranges therefore should not be read as fixed benchmarks for every configuration.
Shinobi
This is one of the manual’s named difficulty choices. Players comfortable with the game’s combat may move through familiar sections quickly, but a first-time player can add substantial retry time if bosses or elite encounters require repeated attempts.
Apprentice and Novice
These lower named choices can make a first story clear more predictable for players who want to see the campaign before optimizing combat. Fewer failed attempts can offset the time spent exploring, although the exact effect depends on your play style.

Custom and assists
Custom difficulty and assists let you tailor the experience. Because the available combination is player-controlled, there is no single completion-time multiplier to apply. Consider the published 10-hour and 15–20-hour ranges as broad planning numbers rather than promises for a particular custom setup.

Story run versus 100% run
| Comparison point | Story-focused run | 100% cleanup run |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | About 10 hours, based on GamesRadar’s campaign description. | About 15–20 hours; TechRadar’s 2025 PS5 estimate was around 16 hours. |
| Stage scope | The roughly dozen-or-so main stages and their required encounters. | The same principal route plus revisits, hidden branches and optional challenge segments. |
| Collectibles and objectives | Whatever you naturally find while progressing. | Elite Squads, Oboro Relics, Secrets and Ankou Rifts, with optional trials and portals. |
| Backtracking | Optional for reaching the ending. | Expected after movement and combat abilities unlock new access. |
| Main time risks | Deaths, boss retries and learning the controls. | Searching missed routes, repeated rift or trial attempts and revisiting low-percentage stages. |
Why the 7:41:41 longplay should not set your expectation
A complete longplay route is listed at 7 hours, 41 minutes and 41 seconds. That recording is useful for seeing the order of areas and the shape of an efficient route, but it is an expert demonstration rather than a typical first-playthrough measurement. It does not account for learning the game, exploring uncertain branches, dying, adjusting assists or repeating optional challenges. Use it as a lower-bound reference for a practiced run, not as the amount of time you should reserve for your own first completion.
Platform and edition considerations
Sega announced Shinobi: Art of Vengeance for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC storefronts. The cited 16-hour figure is specifically a TechRadar reviewer’s PS5 experience with a standard DualSense Wireless Controller. Platform, edition, input device and current regional availability can change what you see in a store listing, so verify those details locally before buying or planning a physical edition. They do not change the basic distinction between a roughly ten-hour story and a substantially longer cleanup run.
How much time should you reserve?
- Only the campaign: reserve about 10 hours, with extra margin if you are learning the genre or playing a higher difficulty.
- Campaign plus casual exploration: plan beyond the story estimate because missed secrets and relics may require a return trip.
- Every tracked objective and optional challenge: reserve 15–20 hours as a realistic planning window; around 16 hours is a documented PS5 example, not a guarantee.
- Near-perfect efficiency: an expert route can be shorter, but the 7:41:41 longplay should not be used to schedule an ordinary first run.
The most efficient general strategy is to finish the campaign once, unlock the movement and combat abilities that open blocked routes, then use the world map’s percentages and fast-travel checkpoints to target unfinished stages. That separates learning the story from the methodical work of collecting every relic, finding every secret, defeating each tracked Elite Squad and completing the rift and trial content that stands between the credits and a true 100% file.
