Octopath Traveler II takes roughly 40–60 hours to finish its main story. A focused run that skips scenes and avoids detours can finish near 40–45 hours, while a normal playthrough with cutscenes, exploration and light side activity is closer to 50–60 hours. If you add side stories and broader exploration, the aggregated player estimate rises to about 82 hours; completionist play is listed at 94.5 hours and can pass 100 hours when you pursue every optional boss, equipment goal and leveling target.
There is also documented postgame content. After you defeat the final boss, current versions unlock Extra Battle, a mode built around tougher opponents, including the original Octopath Traveler protagonists. Most optional activities can be done before the ending, so the best postgame plan depends on whether you want challenge fights, unfinished side stories, collection goals or a second pass through the eight travelers’ abilities.
How many hours is the main story?
Your result depends more on how you play than on a fixed campaign timer. Game8’s 2025 estimate places a lightly detoured story run at 50–60 hours and a heavily focused run with scenes skipped at about 40 hours. Those figures describe the core journey rather than every optional objective.
GOG’s 2023 listing, using aggregated HowLongToBeat player data, reports 59.5 hours for the main story. That number sits near the upper end of a normal run because many players watch scenes and spend time testing party options, visiting towns and taking useful detours. It is a player-time estimate, not a guaranteed completion time or a developer-published length.

The ranges overlap because “main story” is not a standardized route. One player may travel directly between chapter objectives; another may stop to unlock jobs, improve equipment, solve side stories or experiment with Path Actions. Treat the figures as planning bands rather than a promise that the credits will appear at a particular hour.
Why the same game can take 40 hours or more than 100
Scenes and chapter pacing
The eight travelers have individual tales, and watching their scenes adds time that a skip-heavy run removes. A player who treats the game as a direct sequence of objectives will finish sooner than someone who lets every conversation play out and revisits towns between chapters.
Exploration and combat frequency
Octopath Traveler II presents a world intended to be explored at the player’s pace. Optional paths, encounters and locations can improve a party before a chapter, but they also create extra battles and travel. The more often you stop to investigate a new route or prepare a different party, the farther your clock moves beyond a direct story estimate.

Flexible job and skill development encourages trying different combinations instead of using one fixed party. Unlocking and testing those options can add preparation time even when the story objective itself has not changed.

Optional progression and collection
Equipment hunting, side stories, optional dungeons, leveling and difficult boss attempts are the main reasons a complete run extends toward or beyond the 90-hour mark. Game8 notes that these activities, together with a superboss attempt, can push the overall commitment beyond 100 hours.
What is there to do before the final boss?
Most of the game’s breadth is available before the ending. You do not have to wait for a postgame flag to use the systems that make a longer playthrough worthwhile.
Finish the eight individual traveler tales
The central structure is eight separate traveler stories. You can progress through each character’s chapters, switch party priorities and decide how much of the surrounding world to see between objectives. A story-focused player may complete only the chapters needed for the ending; a broader run can give every traveler more attention and development time.

Side stories are optional scenarios with multiple possible solutions. Their branching solutions make them useful for a second pass even if you completed many of them once: changing which character uses a Path Action can produce a different way to resolve a situation. The game does not require you to clear every side story before the final boss, so unfinished entries are a natural post-credits checklist item.

Use Path Actions in towns and on the road
Path Actions are the travelers’ context-sensitive ways of interacting with people and the environment. They can open alternate solutions to side stories and provide reasons to revisit locations with a different party member. If your first run used only a few characters for convenience, trying the other travelers’ actions is a way to uncover content without starting a new game.
Develop jobs and skills
Job and skill development gives the combat system much of its replay value. You can refine a reliable party for the campaign, then build specialized teams for optional encounters. Because the game allows flexible development, there is no single required setup for all players; the time investment comes from unlocking, selecting and testing the combinations that fit your preferred approach.
Search for equipment and optional dungeons
Equipment collection and optional dungeons add exploration goals beyond chapter markers. They also create a practical preparation loop: explore, acquire better gear, adjust jobs and skills, then return to a tougher fight. These activities are available around the main story rather than being reserved exclusively for the postgame.

Optional dungeon bosses and the superboss are the largest pre- or late-game challenges described in the available coverage. They are not needed to see the main ending, and they can require substantial leveling, equipment work and party planning. If your objective is simply to finish the narrative, leave them for later; if you want a completionist file, reserve a significant block of time for them.

Is there postgame content after the final boss?
Yes. Current versions unlock Extra Battle after you defeat the final boss. Square Enix describes Extra Battle as a mode with opponents tougher than those found in the main game, including the main characters from the original Octopath Traveler.
Availability has changed by platform. Square Enix’s announcement says Extra Battle was available on Xbox at launch and was added by update to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. If you are playing an older, unupdated installation, install the platform’s current game update before assuming the mode is missing.
What Extra Battle is for
- Testing endgame builds: Tougher opponents give your job, skill and equipment choices a purpose after the story’s required fights are over.
- Using the full roster: The mode’s inclusion of the original game’s protagonists makes it a crossover-style challenge for players familiar with both titles.
- Extending a completed save: You can continue playing after the final boss instead of treating the credits as the end of all objectives.
The announcement establishes the mode’s unlock condition and broad opponent type, but it does not promise a particular number of battles or a fixed completion time. Your postgame length will therefore depend on how many attempts you make and how much preparation you choose to do.
What should you do after beating Octopath Traveler II?
Use the following order if you want a practical route from the ending to full completion. It prioritizes activities that are easiest to overlook while keeping the hardest fights until your party is ready.

- Confirm that Extra Battle is available. Return to the game’s post-final-boss state and check for the newly unlocked mode. On PS5, PS4, Switch and PC, make sure the game has received the update that added it; Xbox had the mode at launch according to Square Enix’s announcement.
- Record unfinished traveler chapters. Check which of the eight individual tales remain incomplete. Finishing those stories gives you narrative closure before you spend hours on optional combat.
- Review the side-story list. Revisit towns and locations connected to unresolved side stories. Try different travelers’ Path Actions when a previous solution did not produce the result you wanted.
- Complete exploration objectives. Search remaining routes, optional dungeons and equipment sources. Mark areas you skipped because your party was underprepared during the story.
- Refine jobs and skills. Build more than one party configuration if your goal is Extra Battle or optional bosses. A setup that is comfortable for ordinary chapters may not be your best answer to a tougher opponent.
- Upgrade equipment and levels. Use the exploration and combat work from the previous steps to address weaknesses before attempting the hardest encounters. This is where a completionist run accumulates most of its additional hours.
- Attempt optional bosses and the superboss. Treat these as separate projects rather than assuming they will fall immediately after the credits. Rework jobs, skills and equipment between attempts.
- Challenge Extra Battle seriously. Once your party is prepared, use the mode as the final test of the systems you developed. The tougher opponents, including the original protagonists, are the clearest reason to keep playing after the main ending.
How long does a completionist run take?
The best published aggregate figure is 94.5 hours for completionist play, with 80.5 hours listed for “all styles.” Those categories come from HowLongToBeat data shown by GOG in 2023, so they represent player reports rather than a controlled test. Game8’s coverage adds an important practical qualification: side stories, leveling, equipment collection, dungeon bosses and the superboss can push the total beyond 100 hours.
That does not mean every player needs 100 hours to “finish” the game. A player who sees the ending after a normal 50–60-hour run has completed the principal narrative. The longer estimates apply when “done” means clearing optional stories, exploring broadly, collecting gear, developing multiple builds and defeating the most demanding optional opponents.
Which estimate should you use?
Use 40–45 hours if you want the shortest credible plan
Choose this band when you intend to skip scenes, avoid most detours and move directly between required objectives. It is a focused route, not a measure of everything the game contains.
Use 50–60 hours for a normal first playthrough
This is the most useful planning range for a first run that watches scenes, explores lightly and engages with the systems without pursuing every optional goal.
Use about 82 hours for the story plus substantial side content
This band fits players who want the main chapters and a meaningful selection of side stories, Path Action interactions, exploration and development work.
Reserve 95–100-plus hours for broad completion
The 94.5-hour completionist aggregate is a practical baseline, while extensive optional bosses, collection and repeated preparation can take the commitment past 100 hours.
Bottom line
Plan for 40–60 hours to complete Octopath Traveler II‘s main story, about 82 hours for the story with side content, and roughly 94.5 hours for the completionist target reported by HowLongToBeat data on GOG. After the final boss, Extra Battle provides a documented postgame challenge with tougher opponents, including the original protagonists.
