Hell Is Us takes roughly 12–25 hours to finish if you focus on the main story. A completionist run generally takes about 25–35 hours or longer, depending on how much you explore, how quickly you solve puzzles, which difficulty you choose, and how many optional objectives you pursue.

After Act 3, reloading your save returns you to the final story location. You can continue exploring, solve remaining Mysteries and puzzles, complete Timeloops and Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge, collect Research Items and other collectibles, upgrade equipment, defeat remaining Hollow enemies, and clean up many trophies. There is no New Game Plus. Several Good Deeds, NPC conversations, and relic-related requirements are missable during the story, so a completely clean single-run completion requires some planning.

How many hours does Hell Is Us take?

There is no official campaign-length statistic from the publisher. Published estimates instead put the main story between about 12 and 25 hours, with the difference largely explained by play style and by how much optional exploration a player does while progressing.

Scope Estimate Basis and qualification
Main story 12–20 hours GameSpot editorial estimate; adjustable enemy difficulty contributes to the variation.
Main story 20–25 hours PCGamesN estimate based on a staff member’s review playthrough.
Completionist 25–35 hours GameSpot estimate for pursuing substantially more optional content.
Completionist More than 35 hours PCGamesN estimate for a thorough completionist playthrough.

For planning purposes, use about 12–25 hours for the story and 25–35-plus hours for completion. Those are outlet estimates rather than guaranteed durations, laboratory measurements, or a publisher promise. A player who follows the critical path and solves puzzles quickly may finish near the low end. Someone who searches every area, experiments with environmental clues, and pursues trophies as they appear can exceed the high end.

Hell is Us – PlayStation 5
  • A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
  • A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
  • COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
  • 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director

PlayStation describes Hell Is Us as a third-person action-adventure game with a semi-open world. Its exploration system intentionally removes a traditional map, compass, and quest-marker structure, so navigation and deduction are part of the time commitment rather than separate from it. The official listing identifies the game as a PlayStation 5 release from NACON SA, released September 4, 2025.

Why can two players get very different completion times?

Exploration is part of progression

Hell Is Us does not present every objective as a marked waypoint. You are expected to observe locations, interpret clues, revisit places, and decide where to investigate. Two players who reach the same story milestone can therefore have very different amounts of unfinished work and very different travel times.

Puzzles can be quick or time-consuming

Puzzle solving is integrated into exploration. A player who recognizes a clue immediately may move on in minutes, while another may test several interpretations or backtrack through an area. The published ranges reflect this uncertainty better than a single “average” number would.

Combat difficulty changes the pace

GameSpot specifically notes that adjustable enemy difficulty contributes to the campaign-time spread. Combat encounters can take longer when you are learning enemy patterns, retrying fights, or taking a more cautious approach. Lower difficulty can shorten repeated attempts, while a demanding setting may increase time spent preparing and recovering from failures.

Optional objectives overlap the story

Completionist time is not simply the story duration plus one final checklist. Many optional activities are discovered during normal exploration, and pursuing them as you go can either save backtracking later or slow the initial story route. A player who ignores optional content until the end may spend longer retracing areas than a player who handles nearby objectives immediately.

What happens after you finish Act 3?

According to PowerPyx’s trophy and collectible guidance, finishing Act 3 does not permanently end access to the world. Reloading the completed save places you back at the final story location, where you can continue exploring and work through remaining activities.

This is a post-story cleanup state, not a separate campaign or New Game Plus mode. Areas remain accessible for many outstanding objectives, allowing you to search for collectibles, revisit puzzles, and finish combat or upgrade tasks that were not completed before the ending.

Activities that can remain

  • Mysteries and puzzles: Revisit locations and resolve optional investigations you left incomplete.
  • Timeloops: Complete remaining loop-related objectives tied to exploration and progression.
  • Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge: Search for and finish vault activities described in the collectible and trophy guides.
  • Research Items and collectibles: Return to previously visited areas to locate missed items and satisfy collection requirements.
  • Equipment upgrades: Gather what you need for outstanding improvements after the story.
  • Hollow enemies: Clear remaining enemies where combat-related goals or trophies require it.
  • Trophies: Finish eligible trophy requirements that remain available in the post-ending world.

Post-story access is therefore useful for cleanup, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every requirement can be recovered. The timing of certain conversations and deeds matters.

Does Hell Is Us have New Game Plus?

No. PowerPyx reports that Hell Is Us has no New Game Plus mode. After completing the story, you return to the final story location for continued exploration and cleanup rather than starting a second cycle with carried-over progress.

This distinction matters if you are deciding whether to postpone optional tasks. A later New Game Plus run is not available as a safety net for missed interactions. If a trophy or collection objective depends on a conversation, deed, or relic-related condition that can become unavailable, you should handle it during the relevant story window.

What is missable during the story?

PowerPyx’s walkthrough and trophy roadmap identify several categories that can be lost as the story advances:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Good Deeds: Some deed-related opportunities are tied to a particular stage of progression and may disappear after later events.
  • NPC conversations: Certain interactions must be initiated before characters or circumstances change.
  • Relic-related requirements: Some relic objectives depend on actions or encounters that are not guaranteed to remain available after story progression.

Because the exact trigger can vary by objective, the safest approach is not to assume that a post-game reload will restore a missed conversation or deed. When an NPC offers a new subject, when a Good Deed becomes available, or when a relic objective points you toward a specific interaction, complete it before advancing the next major story step.

A practical single-run rule

Before starting a mission or entering a major story sequence, finish nearby optional interactions that are already visible. Speak to NPCs again if their dialogue changes, resolve accessible Good Deeds, and record any unresolved relic or collectible clue. This reduces the chance that a later story event closes the opportunity.

How should you plan a first playthrough?

If you only want the story

  1. Follow the main investigation and accept that the world’s unmarked design may require some searching.
  2. Choose the enemy difficulty that keeps combat enjoyable rather than assuming a higher setting is required for completion.
  3. Complete optional objectives when they are directly on your route, but do not stop to clear every region.
  4. After Act 3, reload the completed save if you want to explore further or collect missed non-missable content.

This approach should fit the broad 12–25-hour story range, although puzzle-solving speed and combat retries can move the result outside either end.

If you want trophies or near-completion

  1. Keep a simple list of unresolved Mysteries, Timeloops, Vaults, Research Items, collectibles, upgrades, and Hollow-related goals.
  2. Whenever a Good Deed or new NPC conversation appears, complete it before pushing the story forward.
  3. Inspect side rooms and return to locations when a clue suggests that something has changed.
  4. Use the post-Act 3 save for broad cleanup, but verify missable requirements during the story rather than relying on the ending to make them available.
  5. Expect at least 25–35 hours and potentially more than 35 hours if you pursue everything thoroughly.

If you want one clean completion run

Treat every newly unlocked conversation and deed as time-sensitive. The main risk is not failing to find a post-game collectible; it is advancing past a story state before completing an interaction that the guides classify as missable. A cautious run may take longer because you pause to investigate, but it avoids the need to replay the campaign for a single missed requirement.

What can you do immediately after the ending?

Once the ending sequence is complete, reload the completed save rather than starting over. You should appear at the final story location. From there, use a systematic route:

  1. Check your trophy and collectible progress. Identify categories with unfinished requirements instead of wandering without a target.
  2. Return to the most recently explored regions. Nearby areas are the most likely places to contain clues or items you postponed.
  3. Resolve outstanding Mysteries and puzzles. The game’s exploration model expects you to use observations and environmental information rather than a conventional quest-marker list.
  4. Complete Timeloops and Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge. Mark each finished activity so you do not repeatedly search the same location.
  5. Collect Research Items and other missed collectibles. Recheck side paths, rooms, and locations where your earlier route was focused only on the story.
  6. Finish equipment upgrades and Hollow-related combat objectives. These are appropriate post-story goals when they remain available.
  7. Stop and verify missables. If a remaining trophy mentions a Good Deed, NPC interaction, or relic condition, consult the relevant objective requirements before assuming it can be finished after the ending.

Is the completionist estimate realistic?

Yes, but it depends on what “completionist” means for you. GameSpot’s 25–35-hour range and PCGamesN’s estimate of more than 35 hours describe thorough play, not a fixed amount of content that every player will complete in exactly that time. A player who discovers optional activities naturally during the story may finish closer to the lower end. A player who searches without markers, revisits areas repeatedly, or needs more time for puzzles can go beyond 35 hours.

The difference between a 25-hour run and a 35-plus-hour run is therefore more likely to come from exploration behavior, puzzle-solving efficiency, combat retries, and cleanup strategy than from a different story path. Neither outlet’s number should be read as an official benchmark.

Where can you play Hell Is Us?

The official PlayStation product listing identifies a PS5 Standard Edition and a September 4, 2025 release date. The duration estimates above apply to the game itself and are not tied to a particular edition price or promotion. No official source listed a guaranteed campaign duration.

Bottom line for your time budget

Set aside a weekend or several shorter sessions for the main story, with 12–25 hours as a realistic planning window. Reserve 25–35 hours or more if you intend to investigate most of the semi-open world, solve optional puzzles, collect Research Items, complete Timeloops and Vaults, upgrade equipment, defeat remaining Hollows, and pursue trophies. After Act 3, you can reload at the final story location and continue that cleanup, but there is no New Game Plus and some Good Deeds, NPC conversations, and relic-related requirements must be completed before story progression makes them unavailable.
