Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse takes about 12–15 hours to reach the Normal ending on a first playthrough. A focused player who follows the critical path may finish in 10–12 hours, while exploration, deaths, puzzle solving, and boss retries can make the run longer. The True Ending usually takes 15–20 or more hours, and a genuine 100% clear generally requires at least 20 hours, with thorough cleanup sometimes reaching 25–30 hours.
The game is an interconnected Metroidvania rather than a sequence of isolated stages. Your time depends on which ending you pursue, how much of the map and collectibles you clear, your familiarity with precision platforming, and whether you use Custom Mode adjustments.

These are guide and reviewer estimates, not an official runtime published by the developer or publisher. AllThingsHow gives approximately 12 hours for the Normal ending and 20 or more hours for a full clear. Bo3.gg places the main story at 10–15 hours and a 100% run at 20 or more hours. Those ranges explain why two players can report very different completion times without either being wrong.

Those sessions are useful reality checks, but they are not universal benchmarks: deaths, route knowledge, and the amount of optional content change the clock substantially.

What “beating” Belmont’s Curse means
There are three possible endings, so “I beat the game” can describe different stopping points.
Bad Ending
The Bad Ending is an early outcome if the required Arcana are missing. AFK Times notes that using the Clock Tower Bridge clock without Soul Harvest leads to this result. It can occur before you have completed the requirements associated with the longer routes, so reaching it does not represent a full story clear.
Normal Ending
The Normal Ending is the conventional first objective and usually falls in the 12–15-hour range. After viewing it, the game allows you to resume the file, making it possible to continue toward the True Ending instead of starting over.

The True Ending takes longer because it requires additional Arcana, further boss encounters, and more searching through previously inaccessible areas. A player who knows the map may finish near the lower end of the 15–20-plus-hour estimate; a first-time explorer can exceed it while opening routes and locating requirements.

How the world is organized
The main map contains eight connected zones in one Metroidvania-style world. Movement upgrades open blocked passages, so progress is not simply “finish zone one, then zone two.” You will repeatedly return to earlier areas when a new ability makes a ledge, gate, or route reachable.

The final castle section is called the Master’s Quarters. It functions as the endgame destination rather than one of the eight principal connected zones listed above. This distinction accounts for route descriptions that mention eight zones but also refer to a separate final castle area.
Bosses: how many fights are there?
Boss totals vary because guides count different things: named entries, map markers, rematches, achievement definitions, and separate forms. One guide describes 13 named bosses and up to 17 individual fights when rematches and Dracula’s successive forms are included. Another checklist refers to 16 bosses, while AFK Times records published totals of 13, 14, or 16 depending on the counting method.

The list contains 14 named entries when every name is counted literally, which is why published summaries do not always agree with the “13 named bosses” figure. The discrepancy is a classification issue, not evidence that content is missing. Death’s first appearance is a scripted loss; the later encounter is the actual fight. Dracula’s successive forms can also be counted as separate fights, raising the total of individual battles.
Some encounters are optional on the standard route but become necessary for the True Ending. Consequently, a Normal-ending run can contain fewer boss attempts than a completionist file even though both players have technically finished the story.
Why one player takes twice as long as another
Route knowledge and backtracking
Veterans of Metroidvania games recognize when a blocked route is likely to become relevant later. New players often spend time testing dead ends, revisiting rooms, and checking every doorway. Because movement upgrades unlock earlier routes, exploration time accumulates across the whole map rather than in one optional post-game area.
Deaths and boss retries
TechRadar characterized the game as demanding, with precise platforming and repeated deaths forming part of the experience. A player who learns a boss quickly may lose only a few minutes per attempt; a player still learning the approach can add hours through repeated travel and retries.

Puzzles and navigation
Confusing room layouts, environmental puzzles, and uncertainty about the next objective slow a blind run more than a guide-assisted run. The 10–12-hour story estimate assumes a focused route, not a completely blind first attempt.
Difficulty and Custom Mode
Standard challenge preserves the intended difficulty curve. Custom Mode adjustments can make combat or traversal more forgiving, which may shorten a first clear for some players. The exact effect depends on the settings chosen, so published hour ranges should not be treated as fixed performance targets.

A full-clear checklist reported by AllThingsHow includes all boss content, 45 relics, 28 weapons, every Tarot card, each Arcana leveled through Works of Mercy, every stat upgrade, the entire map, and the True Ending. Because other sources disagree about several totals, use that list as a category guide rather than assuming every number is settled.

AFK Times records three different relic counts in published material: 40 relics shown by the in-game 100% counter, 41 relic pins on the AllThingsHow map, and 45 reported by TheGamer. Boss totals similarly appear as 13, 14, or 16 when fights, map entries, and achievement definitions are mixed.

For your own completion target, the game’s percentage counter is the most practical authority. It reflects the edition and save file you are actually playing, whereas an external checklist may use a different definition of a relic, a rematch, or a multi-form boss.
How long cleanup adds
Once the story route is complete, the remaining time is driven by missing map percentage, uncollected relics and Tarot cards, weapon and stat upgrades, Arcana levels, and any optional boss encounters. Efficient route planning can keep a 100% file near 20 hours; searching every room and repeating difficult fights can push it toward 25–30 hours.
Planning your own playthrough
If you only want the story
- Choose the standard route and prioritize objectives that open movement or progression.
- Mark blocked passages mentally or on a personal map so you can return after obtaining an upgrade.
- Do not stop to clear every side room during the first pass unless it is directly on your route.
- Expect roughly 12–15 hours, with 10–12 possible if you already know the path and avoid extended detours.
If you want the True Ending
- Keep Arcana requirements in mind rather than treating optional rooms as permanently missable.
- Investigate newly opened paths after movement upgrades instead of waiting until the final area.
- Allow extra time for optional bosses and the additional travel between zones.
- Use the Normal-ending resume opportunity as a continuation point if you reach that ending before satisfying the True Ending conditions.
If you want 100%
- Use the in-game percentage counter as the final authority for progress.
- Track relics, weapons, Tarot cards, Arcana levels, stat upgrades, boss encounters, and map coverage separately.
- Revisit every zone after major movement upgrades; the connected layout means early rooms can contain late-access items.
- Reserve time for cleanup after the main route. A 20-hour minimum is realistic, while a careful 25–30-hour file is normal when navigation and retries are slow.

The safest single expectation for a first playthrough is a mid-teen number of hours, not a precise stopwatch result. The Normal ending is the useful baseline; the True Ending and 100% targets add clearly defined exploration and encounter requirements rather than merely stretching the same critical path.
