Long-duration energy storage helps balance wind and solar by charging when electricity is abundant and releasing it later, when renewable output falls or demand rises. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines long-duration energy storage (LDES) for its program as storage capable of delivering electricity for 10 or more hours. It can shift energy through time and reduce some renewable curtailment, but it cannot create electricity, return every unit it stores, or replace transmission, flexible generation and other sources of grid flexibility.
How storage balances renewable supply and demand
Electricity supply and demand have to be balanced as the grid operates. Wind and solar output varies with weather and time of day, while electricity demand follows its own pattern. When generation is greater than the grid can use at that moment, operators may curtail some renewable generation. A storage system can take in some of that surplus electricity, hold it, and send it back to the grid later.
That shifts electricity through time; it does not produce additional energy. The basic sequence is charging during a period of surplus, storing energy in a chosen medium, then discharging when power is more useful. Storage can help match renewable supply with demand and reduce some curtailment, but it cannot capture all excess generation in every situation. The system needs sufficient charging power and energy capacity, and there must be a later need for the electricity it can deliver.

A familiar solar-balancing pattern is to charge storage during daytime solar generation and discharge after sunset, including into evening demand. Solar output follows a daily cycle, so this kind of intraday shifting can move some daytime electricity to a later part of the same day. The amount that can be shifted depends on the system’s capacity and operating conditions; a battery or other storage system is not guaranteed to capture every midday surplus.

Wind: respond to variable weather
Wind generation changes with weather rather than following a simple daily cycle. A storage system can charge when wind output is high relative to what the grid can use and discharge when output declines or demand is higher. Because the pattern is less regular than the day-night solar cycle, wind-related storage operation may not occur on a predictable daily schedule.
Storage can also provide other grid services, but which services it can supply depends on the system design and operating conditions. The central balancing role remains the same: move some electricity from a time when it is available to a time when it is more useful.
What “long-duration” means—and what it does not
DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations defines LDES for its program as a system capable of delivering electricity for 10 or more hours. That is a DOE program definition, not a universal boundary used by every analysis. NREL’s July 2024 program summary uses an approximately 10–100 hour range for LDES in its analysis and treats seasonal storage separately. These definitions reflect different analytical frameworks and use cases, rather than a single fixed dividing line for every grid.
“Long-duration” does not mean that every installation stores electricity for days, nor does it specify a technology. A system’s discharge duration depends on how much energy it can store relative to how quickly it can deliver power. A multi-hour system intended to shift energy within a day is also not automatically seasonal storage. Hydrogen and other energy carriers may be considered for longer time scales, but a reader should distinguish multi-hour shifting from seasonal balancing rather than assume that every hydrogen project is seasonal storage.

DOE explains the basic difference between energy and power capacity in its solar integration and storage overview. Energy capacity is how much electricity a system can store, usually measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or megawatt-hours (MWh). Power capacity is how quickly it can deliver electricity, measured in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW). Both are needed to assess whether a system suits a particular balancing need.
Why energy and power ratings both matter
Consider a simplified, illustrative system rated to deliver 1 MW with 10 MWh of usable energy. At that output, its energy capacity corresponds to 10 hours of delivery. If the same stored energy were delivered at a higher power level, it would run for fewer hours; if delivered more slowly, it could run longer. This arithmetic explains the energy-to-power relationship, but it does not account for conversion losses, operating limits or a specific installation’s configuration.
A grid balancing need may call for a high discharge rate, a long discharge period, or both. Looking only at a power rating says how quickly electricity can be supplied, not how long supply can continue. Looking only at energy capacity says how much energy is available, not how quickly it can be delivered. The intended service and time scale—intraday shifting, multi-day resilience or seasonal balancing—help determine the combination that matters.
How storage technologies differ
DOE’s August 2024 assessment groups LDES approaches into four broad technology families. The families store energy in different forms and use different conversion pathways. As a result, their efficiency, cost, siting needs and maturity cannot be ranked in the abstract; a meaningful comparison depends on the specific application and its assumptions.

| Technology family | How the energy is stored or returned | Considerations for a grid application |
|---|---|---|
| Electrochemical | Stores energy through electrochemical processes; includes flow batteries and several battery chemistries. | Compare the configured discharge duration, energy-to-power sizing, efficiency, cost assumptions and operating life for the intended service. |
| Chemical | Includes bidirectional hydrogen, in which electricity can be converted to a chemical energy carrier and later converted back. | Account for the conversion steps and the time scale being targeted. Multi-hour use and seasonal storage are distinct questions. |
| Mechanical | Includes compressed-air energy storage and pumped-storage hydropower, which stores energy by pumping water uphill and later generating electricity through turbines. | Geography and resource requirements matter. For pumped hydropower, DOE notes landscape and reservoir needs, long permitting and implementation times, and high initial capital needs. |
| Thermal | Stores energy as heat; DOE’s demonstration examples include particle-based and electric thermal storage. | Assess the system’s design and conversion path as well as the discharge duration and grid service it is meant to provide. |
The table describes broad families, not guaranteed performance values. For any specific proposal, compare discharge duration, round-trip efficiency, siting and resource requirements, cost assumptions, operating life and technology maturity. A system that converts electricity to heat or hydrogen and later back to electricity has a different conversion path from one that stores energy mechanically or electrochemically. Those steps affect how much of the charged electricity can be returned.
Pumped-storage hydropower
In pumped-storage hydropower, electricity is used to move water uphill. When electricity is needed, the water is released through turbines to generate power. DOE describes the technology as mature and well tested, while also noting that it can require suitable landscapes and reservoirs, lengthy permitting and implementation, and substantial initial capital. Those constraints make site suitability and project timing important parts of the comparison.
Demonstrations illustrate different designs, not universal benchmarks
DOE’s awarded-project page describes examples that include a particle-based thermal energy storage system with an 18-hour duration, a clean hydrogen-battery hybrid with 24+ and 72+ hour configurations, and a vanadium flow battery demonstration described as having a 24-hour discharge duration. The page names Sandia National Laboratories, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Invinity Energy Systems among project participants. A separate entry names CMBlu Energy as a solid-flow-battery manufacturer working with Argonne and Idaho National Laboratories.

Efficiency, curtailment and the limits of storage
Storage is not perfectly efficient. Energy is lost during conversion and retrieval, so one megawatt-hour charged does not necessarily yield one megawatt-hour when discharged. The amount returned depends on the storage technology and system configuration. That is why round-trip efficiency and any conversion steps should be part of an application-specific comparison, rather than assuming that all surplus electricity can be saved and delivered later.
Storage can reduce curtailment by absorbing some electricity that otherwise could not be used at that time, but it does not eliminate the conditions that cause curtailment. A system may not have enough charging power or energy capacity for a surplus, and its stored energy must be used at a later time when delivery is useful. Curtailment can still occur in high-renewables systems even when storage is part of the resource mix.
For example, NREL’s July 2024 program summary reports 7%–14% curtailment of total variable-renewable generation in the high-variable-renewable scenarios it studied for countries in its analysis. That is a modeled scenario result under the report’s assumptions, not an observed rate for every grid or a universal forecast. It illustrates why storage should be understood as one tool for managing renewable variability, not a guarantee that every available unit of wind or solar generation will be used.

Storage also does not create electricity. It moves electricity from one time to another, with conversion losses and technology-specific capital, operating and siting constraints. Its value therefore depends on the wider grid: when and where surplus generation occurs, what demand looks like later, and what other resources can move or supply power.

Why storage works best as part of a broader grid
Grid reliability depends on more than storage. Transmission can move electricity between places; flexible generators can adjust operation; and demand response can help align electricity use with available supply. Storage adds another source of operational flexibility by charging and discharging at different times. The mix of resources required depends on future conditions and the grid being served.
DOE’s summary of the North American Renewable Integration Study states: “The future low-carbon system can balance supply and demand across a wide range of future conditions, with all generation and storage technologies contributing to resource adequacy.” The study summary identifies transmission, electricity storage and flexible operation of generators as sources of operational flexibility. The point is not that one resource can guarantee reliability on its own, but that multiple resources can contribute to balancing supply and demand.
In practice, a storage proposal should be judged against the particular grid need it is intended to address. A solar-heavy system seeking to shift daytime supply into evening hours has a different operating pattern from one facing variable wind output or seeking longer-duration resilience. Transmission access, flexible generation, demand response and the storage system’s own power and energy ratings all shape how much it can contribute.
What DOE’s cost projections do—and do not—say
DOE’s August 2024 assessment modeled 12%–85% reductions in levelized cost of storage, reaching $0.03–$0.26 per kWh across the top 10% of cost-reducing innovation portfolios and technologies it analyzed. DOE also reported average ranges of roughly $100 million–$1 billion in innovation investment and 6–11 years to implement for those modeled technology innovation portfolios.
These figures describe modeled innovation outcomes, not prices available to a project developer or utility today. They are tied to the portfolios and technologies in DOE’s assessment; they should not be presented as current market prices, a forecast for every storage system, or a direct comparison of projects in different locations. The distinction matters because storage costs and practical suitability depend on technology, system design and project assumptions.
How to assess whether LDES fits a balancing need
A useful assessment starts with the grid problem rather than a preferred technology. The key question is when electricity is surplus, when it is needed, how quickly it must be delivered, and for how long. Those details determine whether a storage system’s power capacity, energy capacity, discharge duration and location match the need.
- Identify the timing mismatch. Determine whether the need is intraday shifting, response to variable multi-hour conditions, multi-day resilience or seasonal balancing. Do not assume a system described as long-duration is automatically a seasonal resource.
- Define the required discharge. Specify both the power needed, in kW or MW, and the energy needed, in kWh or MWh. Compare the energy-to-power relationship with the intended delivery period.
- Account for energy losses. Compare round-trip efficiency and conversion steps, including any conversion between electricity and heat or hydrogen. Plan around the energy that can be returned, not just the energy charged.
- Check siting and resource constraints. Consider geography, geology, water and other site requirements alongside permitting, implementation time and initial capital needs.
- Compare project-specific economics and maturity. Use comparable cost assumptions and consider operating life and technology maturity. DOE’s modeled innovation cost outcomes are not a substitute for current project-specific pricing.
- Evaluate the whole grid portfolio. Consider how transmission, flexible generation, demand response and other resources complement storage, and whether the proposed system addresses the particular supply-demand mismatch.
This framework avoids a misleading “best technology” ranking. A storage option is useful only insofar as its duration, delivery rate, efficiency, location and economics fit a defined grid service.
