OnePlus promises the OnePlus Open at least four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates from launch. That is a commitment for the phone, not a stated update term for any particular open-beta branch. For a phone you rely on every day, the stable public OTA channel is the safer choice: OnePlus warns that beta builds may be less stable and reliable.

What “OnePlus Open beta updates” can mean

The phrase can refer either to updates for the OnePlus Open handset or to updates for a particular open-beta software branch. Those are different things. OnePlus’s OnePlus Open specifications describe the device-level support promise. Beta announcements, by contrast, describe specific programs or builds, with their own eligibility and availability.

OnePlus states that the OnePlus Open will receive at least four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates from the launch date. This is the best-supported answer to how long the device is promised software support. It does not say that one beta branch will be maintained for four Android generations or five years, nor does it set a fixed beta update interval.

The cited official beta materials do not establish a standard maintenance period or update frequency for an individual beta. A beta can be tied to a particular OxygenOS or Android version and program announcement; its term should not be inferred from the phone’s broader support policy. The sources also do not establish a precise final calendar date for every regional variant, so it would be misleading to calculate a beta end date from the device-level promise.

In practical terms, “five years of security updates” is not the same as “five years of beta updates.” The first is OnePlus’s stated support commitment for the device, measured from launch. The second would be a promise about the life and maintenance of a specific experimental software branch, and no such fixed term is stated in the cited beta notice. A beta participant should therefore judge each announcement by its stated version, eligibility, and current availability rather than assume that the device policy guarantees continued beta builds.

Is a beta safe for a daily-use phone?

It may work well enough for some people, but OnePlus does not describe the cited beta as equivalent in reliability to a public release. In its OxygenOS 16 Open Beta announcement, the OnePlus OxygenOS Team warned: “These builds may be less stable and reliable than our official public OTA releases.” The notice also recommends backing up important data before installing. Those warnings justify caution; they do not prove that every beta has a particular defect or that every user will encounter a problem.

A separate OnePlus notice for Android 15 Beta 1 for the OnePlus Open and OnePlus 12 called that build suitable for developers and advanced users. It advised against flashing that ROM if a user had limited software-development experience, intended to use the phone as a primary driver, or lacked custom-ROM installation experience. This is a warning about that named Android 15 Beta 1 build, not evidence that every later beta has identical risks.

For a phone needed for dependable calls, messaging, work apps, travel access, or uninterrupted service, choose the stable public OTA channel. The beta channel is a more reasonable fit for someone technically experienced who can tolerate possible instability, has a current backup, can manage a problematic installation, and is willing to report issues. That is a cautious decision rule based on OnePlus’s stated warnings, not a claim that the beta has been independently tested.

“Safe” also depends on what a disruption would mean for you. If the OnePlus Open is your only way to receive work messages, use travel details, or contact people in an emergency, even a temporary problem may be unacceptable. If you have another reliable phone and can spend time troubleshooting or reverting when needed, the practical downside may be easier to absorb. OnePlus’s warnings do not quantify the likelihood of a problem, so there is no evidence-based failure rate to use in that decision.

A backup reduces the risk of losing important data, but it does not guarantee that the beta itself will be trouble-free or that every issue can be fixed quickly. Think about the whole plan: what data needs to be preserved, whether you can temporarily use another device, and whether you are comfortable following the specific installation or recovery guidance for that build. The cited notices recommend a backup but do not give one universal recovery method for all betas.

Beta and stable updates are different choices

Consideration Open beta Stable public OTA
Reliability OnePlus cautions that beta builds may be less stable and reliable than public OTA releases. OnePlus uses public OTA releases as the reliability comparison point in its beta notice.
Preparation OnePlus recommends backing up important data before installing the cited OxygenOS 16 beta. The cited beta notice does not give a separate stable-channel backup instruction.
Who it suits Technically experienced users able to accept instability and manage a problematic build. People who prioritize dependable everyday access to their phone.
Availability and timing Program access can depend on region, eligible software version, and the terms of a specific recruitment notice. An announced OTA can be staged rather than arriving on every eligible phone at once.
Update commitment No fixed maintenance duration or cadence for an individual beta is stated in the cited notice. The device-level support policy is at least four Android OS upgrade generations and five years of security updates from launch.

The stable channel is not necessarily updated on the same day for every user. OnePlus announced OxygenOS 16.0.5.1301 for the OnePlus Open on September 21, 2026, for India, Europe, and North America, and said its OTA rollout would begin with a small percentage of users before expanding. That announcement listed the September 2026 Android security patch. It is evidence of a specific release and staged rollout—not a guarantee that every eligible phone or carrier received it on September 21.

The comparison is therefore not “beta gets updates and stable does not” or “stable is instantly available to everyone.” Both access and timing can vary. Beta recruitment may be restricted to a named region and starting build, while a public OTA can be released gradually. If you need a predictable phone, stable remains the more cautious channel, but an announced stable update can still take time to reach an individual handset.

Nor does the device support promise tell you which channel gets a particular update first or how often either channel will receive one. The official information cited here does not set a recurring weekly, monthly, or other fixed beta schedule. Treat specific dates and rollout descriptions as release-specific rather than a pattern guaranteed for future updates.

Check whether a beta announcement applies to your phone

Beta enrollment is version- and region-specific. For example, OnePlus’s OxygenOS 16 Open Beta recruitment announcement was posted October 9, 2025, and described availability in India at that stage. It gave an application window of October 9–13 and named prerequisite software versions. Those dates and requirements describe that recruitment, not an open enrollment period that should be assumed to remain available now.

Before acting on any beta announcement, read the current OnePlus notice and confirm all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model: The notice must list the OnePlus Open, not just another OnePlus phone or a related model.
  • Region: The program must be available for your region. A notice for India does not establish availability in Europe or North America.
  • Starting software: Check that your phone’s current build meets the exact prerequisite in that announcement.
  • Application period and build: Confirm that recruitment is still open and that the notice refers to the version you intend to install. An old announcement is not proof of current eligibility.
  • Risk and recovery: Read the release-specific warnings, make a current backup, and decide whether you can cope with the phone becoming unreliable or needing recovery.

OnePlus’s OxygenOS 16 Open Beta announcement is useful for understanding how eligibility and risks were described for that particular 2025 program. It should not be used as a current sign-up guide: its recruitment window has passed.

The historical details matter because “OnePlus Open beta” does not mean one permanent, worldwide enrollment program. The October 2025 announcement was India-only at that stage and set out its own application dates and required starting versions. Someone in another region, or someone using a different build, should not assume the same route applies. Look for an announcement that matches both your exact model and the software currently installed on your phone.

How to make the daily-use decision

Stay on the public OTA channel if reliability comes first

If losing access to calls, work tools, messages, or travel information would cause a serious problem, the stable public release is the prudent option. A beta’s purpose is to expose software before it is a public OTA, and OnePlus’s own wording explicitly allows for lower stability and reliability. Waiting for the public release avoids choosing that stated trade-off without requiring you to predict which particular bug might occur.

This recommendation is especially straightforward if the phone is your primary driver and you have limited experience with software development or custom-ROM installations. OnePlus’s Android 15 Beta 1 notice explicitly cautioned that audience against flashing that particular ROM. It is not a blanket claim that every beta is unsuitable for every owner; it is a strong reason to follow the warning attached to the exact build rather than treating all beta labels as interchangeable.

Consider a beta only if you can absorb the downside

A beta can suit someone who has software experience, wants to try an early build, and can report issues without depending on the device as their only reliable phone. Before installing, preserve important data in a current backup and have a realistic plan for what you will do if the build disrupts normal use. The cited materials recommend a backup but do not provide a universal recovery procedure, so follow the installation and recovery instructions attached to the exact build rather than assuming that steps for another release apply.

Also verify that you are still eligible before you make plans around enrollment. A recruitment window may close, a program may be limited to a region, and an announcement may require a particular starting software version. Eligibility is not itself a promise that every OnePlus Open owner can install the same beta at the same time.

Do not treat an update promise as a beta service-level guarantee

The four-generation and five-year device policy answers how long OnePlus says the handset receives OS and security support. It does not promise that beta builds will arrive at a fixed pace, that a specific beta remains available for the whole support period, or that a beta is as dependable as a public release. Keep those questions separate when deciding whether to enroll.

Likewise, one dated public OTA announcement cannot establish the future cadence of either channel. The September 2026 release gives a concrete example of a stable update, its stated regions, its security patch, and its staged delivery. It should not be used to predict when another OTA—or a beta build—will arrive.

What to expect after an update is announced

Announcement date and arrival date are not always the same. The September 2026 OxygenOS 16.0.5.1301 notice said rollout would be incremental, beginning with a small percentage before wider availability. If an update is announced but does not immediately appear on a particular phone, that announcement alone does not prove the device is ineligible or that its region has received the rollout. Check the release notice for the region and build details, then allow for the staged rollout OnePlus describes.

The OxygenOS 16.0.5.1301 announcement is a concrete example of a public update with a named regional scope, security-patch level, and staged delivery. It should not be read as a schedule for future OTAs or for beta updates.

The same caution applies when comparing a notice with what is installed on your handset: check the exact build and region specified rather than assuming that an announcement applies universally. OnePlus’s September 21, 2026 post named India, Europe, and North America, but said the initial rollout would reach only a small percentage before broadening. A delay in seeing the OTA is consistent with staged distribution; the notice does not promise simultaneous delivery to every user or carrier.

Bottom line on support and safety

The OnePlus Open has a stated device-level commitment of at least four Android OS upgrade generations and five years of security updates from launch. No equivalent fixed term or cadence is established for an individual open beta. For a phone that must be dependable each day, use stable public OTAs; beta participation is best reserved for people who understand and can tolerate the additional uncertainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a OnePlus Open beta receive updates?

OnePlus’s device specifications promise at least four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates from launch for the OnePlus Open. The cited beta materials do not promise a fixed maintenance period or update cadence for an individual beta branch.

Is OnePlus Open beta software safe to use as my main phone?

OnePlus warns that the cited OxygenOS 16 beta builds may be less stable and reliable than public OTA releases and recommends backing up important data. For a phone you depend on for calls, work, travel, or uninterrupted service, stable public OTAs are the more cautious choice.

Does every OnePlus Open owner qualify for the same beta?

No universal eligibility is established. OnePlus’s October 2025 OxygenOS 16 recruitment notice was for India at that stage, used a defined application window, and listed prerequisite software versions. Check the current notice for your model, region, starting build, and enrollment dates.

Why has an announced OnePlus Open update not reached my phone yet?

OnePlus said the September 2026 OxygenOS 16.0.5.1301 OTA would roll out incrementally, starting with a small percentage of users before expanding. An announcement does not mean every eligible phone receives the update on the same day.

Does the four-year/five-year support promise mean four or five years of beta updates?

No. The promise describes device-level OS and security support from launch, not the lifespan of a specific beta branch. OnePlus does not state a fixed beta term in the cited program notice.

The Bottom Line

OnePlus promises at least four Android OS upgrade generations and five years of security updates for the OnePlus Open from launch, but that is not a fixed support term for any beta branch. Because OnePlus warns that beta builds may be less stable, keep a daily-use phone on stable public OTAs unless you can accept the risk, back up your data, and manage a problematic build.
