Plan on approximately 25–40 hours for a focused run at all 62 Steam achievements in Over the Hill. That is a planning estimate, not an official completion-time average. A TechRadar session logged about 10 hours while reaching most of the game’s main areas and features, but 100% completion adds cumulative distance, wildlife photography, collectibles, upgrades, recovery actions, vehicle and cosmetic objectives, and regional cleanup. A relaxed explorer or a player who must revisit areas for hidden objectives can take longer.
Quick answer: 25–40 hours is a realistic planning range
The game can feel short if your goal is simply to see its main content. The approximately 10-hour figure reported by TechRadar describes a play session that covered most principal areas and features; it does not represent unlocking every achievement. The Steam achievement list contains 62 entries, and several require cumulative progress or deliberate cleanup after normal exploration.

The lower end assumes you combine objectives while driving, keep track of what remains, and avoid unnecessary duplicate trips. The upper end is more likely if you explore without a checklist, postpone photography or collectibles, or need a separate sweep for concealed achievements.
What “every achievement” includes
“All achievements” means all 62 Steam entries, not merely finishing the central progression. The public Steam list and the achievement reference describe several independent tracks. Progress in one track does not automatically finish the others, so a completion route must account for each family.

Exploration, regions, and story-related objectives
Regional completion and story-linked objectives encourage revisiting areas rather than following one uninterrupted path. You may pass through a region during normal play yet still have a regional requirement, a photograph, a collectible, or another concealed condition outstanding. This is the main reason a route that reaches most areas in roughly ten hours can still need many additional hours.
Wildlife and special-entry photography
Photography achievements form a checklist separate from simply driving through a location. Specific wildlife or special subjects may require finding the right place, waiting for an appearance, and returning when your first route did not line up with the subject. Treat photography as an ongoing task instead of a final afterthought if you want to stay near the efficient end of the estimate.
Collectibles and meteorites
Collectibles and meteorites add another layer of route planning. They are easy to miss while concentrating on movement or story progress, and cleaning them up later can force cross-region travel. Marking each discovery as you go reduces the amount of blind searching at the end.
Distance milestones
The achievement reference lists cumulative distance milestones at 100 km and 1,000 km. Ordinary driving contributes to these totals, but the larger milestone can become a grind if you finish every other objective first. Do not assume that seeing every region means you have traveled enough distance; the counter measures total accumulated travel, not map coverage.

Vehicles, cosmetics, upgrades, and recovery actions
The Steam list includes an objective to unlock six vehicles and another to equip at least five cosmetics at the same time. Separate achievements cover upgrades and recovery actions. These requirements reward deliberate interaction with systems that a story-focused run might barely use, so budget time to unlock, equip, improve, and trigger them rather than expecting them to appear automatically.
Hidden achievements
Some entries remain concealed until they unlock. A blind run therefore carries uncertainty: you may reach the visible objectives and still need to identify what the hidden entries require. Hidden achievements are a common reason an apparently complete save needs one more exploratory pass.
Why the ten-hour figure is not a 100% estimate
A reviewer’s ten-hour session answers “How long until I have seen most of the game?” It does not answer “How long until every checklist is complete?” The distinction matters because the achievement categories measure breadth and repetition:

- One-time discovery versus cumulative totals: Finding a route or landmark happens once, while distance milestones continue counting toward 1,000 km.
- Natural encounters versus targeted photography: A subject seen during travel may not satisfy every photography entry.
- Progression versus system use: Unlocking or seeing a vehicle does not by itself mean you have unlocked six, equipped five cosmetics simultaneously, completed upgrades, or performed required recovery actions.
- Visible progress versus concealed requirements: Hidden entries can remain unknown until their trigger occurs.
Because these tracks overlap only partially, a completionist spends time after the main tour checking counters, revisiting regions, and deliberately performing actions that a normal playthrough may never require.

How the two common approaches compare

Neither approach is wrong. The relaxed route preserves discovery, while the checklist route trades some spontaneity for fewer duplicate journeys. You can also mix them: explore freely until the main areas are familiar, then switch to a tracked cleanup route.
A practical route for minimizing wasted hours
The following procedure does not promise a particular total; it is designed to keep the estimate defensible by preventing avoidable repeats.
- Start a live achievement checklist. Record all 62 Steam entries, including concealed entries once they reveal themselves. Separate the list into regions, photography, collectibles and meteorites, distance, vehicles, cosmetics, upgrades, recovery actions, and story-related tasks.
- Combine objectives by location. Before leaving a region, check for nearby collectibles, meteorites, wildlife subjects, regional conditions, and system actions. A single outing that satisfies several categories is more efficient than returning for each one.
- Photograph subjects when you are already nearby. If a wildlife or special entry is available during travel, handle it then and mark it complete. If a subject is absent, note the location and move on rather than repeatedly circling without a plan; return during cleanup when you can focus on the missing entry.
- Track every pickup immediately. Mark collectibles and meteorites as soon as you confirm them. A simple region-by-region record prevents uncertain “did I already get that?” trips later.
- Use progression systems deliberately. Watch the vehicle count, equip the required five cosmetics at the same time when possible, and perform upgrade and recovery actions as they become available. Leaving all system-based objectives until the final hour creates a concentrated checklist and extra travel.
- Let normal travel build distance, then measure the gap. Keep an eye on progress toward 100 km and 1,000 km. After regional and collectible cleanup, calculate whether the remaining distance requires intentional driving. This avoids turning every trip into a grind while still preventing a surprise final-mileage wall.
- Reserve a hidden-achievement sweep. Once visible categories are complete, review the now-revealed list and test only the missing conditions. Use your notes to revisit the smallest number of relevant regions instead of restarting your entire route.
Where the extra hours usually go
Regional cleanup after the main route
Regional and story-related achievements are the most obvious source of backtracking. You may have driven past the right area without satisfying its condition, or discovered a requirement only after unlocking a vehicle, upgrade, or other system. A cleanup pass is faster when your notes identify the exact region and objective instead of relying on memory.
Photography that depends on timing
Wildlife photography can be variable because a subject may not be present when you first arrive. Waiting, repositioning, and returning are all legitimate parts of the hunt. The time cost is therefore not just the shutter action; it includes locating the subject and aligning your route with its appearance.

Long-distance accumulation
The 100 km milestone can arrive naturally for many players, but 1,000 km is large enough to remain unfinished after the map’s major sights and checklist items are done. If that happens, the remaining sessions are less about discovery and more about deliberate distance accumulation. Treat this as a known end-stage possibility rather than evidence that your save is bugged.
Unplanned system objectives
Vehicle unlocks, simultaneous cosmetics, upgrades, and recovery actions are easy to postpone because they do not always interrupt exploration. Postponement turns a small interaction into a separate trip. Check these categories whenever you reach a hub or menu where the relevant action is available.
Unknown hidden requirements
A concealed achievement can add time even when your visible checklist looks finished. The additional work depends on what the entry reveals and how much of the world you have already covered, which is why no single guaranteed completion time can be inferred from the public list.

- Early phase: If you are still learning routes and seeing new regions, the ten-hour review figure is a useful comparison for breadth only.
- Middle phase: Once most areas are familiar, count the unfinished categories rather than judging progress by map coverage. A long list of photos, pickups, or system actions means the completion clock is still substantial.
- Cleanup phase: When only distance or a few concealed entries remain, your remaining time depends on travel efficiency and whether those conditions require waiting or repeated visits.
Players who finish the visible regional, photography, collectible, vehicle, cosmetic, upgrade, and recovery lists but still have a distance milestone should continue driving and monitor the counter. Players who have traveled widely but have many unverified checklist entries should stop exploring randomly and organize the next trip around those entries.
Common mistakes that make a completion run longer
- Equating story completion with achievement completion: Reaching the main areas does not verify every regional or system objective.
- Ignoring the distance counter: Discovering the map does not guarantee 1,000 km of cumulative travel.
- Leaving photography and collectibles for an unplanned finale: A final sweep without notes creates unnecessary cross-region trips.
- Forgetting simultaneous equipment requirements: Owning cosmetics is different from having at least five equipped at once.
- Assuming hidden achievements will be obvious: Concealed entries can require a targeted follow-up after visible goals are complete.
- Repeating routes without recording results: Marking each confirmed objective is faster than relying on memory.
Is Over the Hill a short completion?
It is short to sample and moderate to complete. About ten hours can show most principal areas and features, which makes the game feel compact for a first playthrough. The all-achievement target is materially longer because it combines exploration with cumulative distance, photography, collectibles, regional requirements, hidden conditions, and system-specific actions. Calling it a “short completion” is therefore accurate only if you mean the main tour, not a verified 62-achievement finish.
The 25–40-hour figure should be read as a practical scheduling window assembled from the available playtime report and the scope of the achievement list. It is not a developer-published average, a guaranteed median, or a promise that every player will finish within the same number of sessions. Your own total will be closest to the lower end when you maintain a checklist and combine tasks; it will move higher when you favor unscripted exploration, miss timed subjects, or postpone distance and cleanup work.
