A game on the scale of Grand Theft Auto VI or Red Dead Redemption 2 generally needs about six to eight years of active production, followed by earlier concept and pre-production work that may begin before a public milestone. That is a planning range, not a stopwatch. Rockstar and Take-Two use different definitions of when development starts, and different disciplines can work on the project for different lengths of time.
Take-Two said GTA VI entered development “in earnest” in 2020, after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018. Against the 2026 release window cited by the company, that is roughly six years of full-production work. Dan Houser’s often-repeated seven-year figure for Red Dead Redemption 2 referred to a four-person senior writing team, not every developer on the project.

The practical answer: plan for six to eight years of active production
For a huge open-world game with a bespoke engine, a large cast, extensive missions, systemic artificial intelligence, vehicles, animation, audio and a highly detailed map, six to eight years is a defensible active-production range. Concept development, technology experiments and early pre-production can start earlier, while some content continues to be revised after the main production milestone.

The most useful estimate therefore has three parts:
- Concept and pre-production: deciding the setting, pillars, technology direction and production plan. The exact duration is not publicly established for either game.
- Active full production: the period in which most of the world, missions, systems and supporting technology are built and integrated. For this class of project, about six to eight years is a reasonable planning range.
- Final integration and polish: a substantial closing phase in which the team resolves interactions between systems, improves performance and quality, and finishes the creative work. It is not simply a short bug-fixing interval.
Because these phases overlap, adding their durations together would overstate the calendar. A project can be in pre-production for one area while another area is already in full production.
What the Red Dead Redemption 2 timeline actually tells us
The public release date
Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on October 26, 2018. That date marks the end of the public development story, but it does not reveal when the entire project began or how many people worked on it at each stage.

The seven-year writing figure
In 2018, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser said the senior writing team had worked on the game for seven years. He named four people: Mike Unsworth, Rupert Humphries, Lazlow and Houser himself. He also said that, after those seven years, the group completed three intense weeks of work to wrap everything up.
Those details describe a specific writing group and a final writing push. They do not prove that the whole development organization worked continuously for seven years, nor that every discipline started simultaneously. A writer may begin shaping characters and story long before a final mission is implemented, while engineering, art and production schedules change as the design becomes clearer.
Why “seven years” is still useful
The figure demonstrates how early narrative work can begin on a project of this scale and how a specialist team’s schedule can differ from the rest of the studio. It is evidence of a long development arc, but it should not be presented as a verified whole-project stopwatch.
How GTA VI’s reported timeline compares
“In earnest” is a production milestone, not necessarily day one
Take-Two said GTA VI began development “in earnest” in 2020, after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018. With a 2026 release window cited in the company’s reporting, that implies about six years from a full-production milestone to the planned release window.
Small groups may have explored ideas, technology or prototypes before 2020. The phrase “in earnest” therefore identifies the point at which the project became a major, organized production effort; it does not establish an absolute start date for every employee or every piece of work.

Why the GTA VI interval can look longer
Take-Two has described GTA VI as more ambitious and complex than earlier Rockstar releases. A larger or denser world increases the number of dependencies: a mission may rely on a location, character behavior, animation set, vehicle logic, audio cues and streaming technology all working together. Expanding any one of those areas creates additional integration and testing work elsewhere.
The comparison also spans different working methods. After Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar publishing head Jennifer Kolbe said, “We’re not doing it again like this,” and “We’re not going to finish this game by crunching.” She said the company handled GTA VI differently and was proud of that change while acknowledging that the approach was not perfect. A more sustainable schedule can reduce extreme overtime, but it does not make the underlying creative and technical work disappear; it can make the calendar more deliberate.

Why an open-world production takes so long
World density creates dependencies
A large map is not just a collection of buildings. Each location needs visual assets, collision, navigation, lighting, ambient activity, mission hooks and streaming behavior. The more locations and interactions a game offers, the more combinations must be checked. A change to a road, interior or character routine can affect missions that were authored months earlier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSystems must work together, not merely exist
Vehicles, weapons, civilians, police or enemy behavior, weather, animation, dialogue and mission scripting each have their own edge cases. The production challenge is making them coexist when a player behaves unpredictably. Open-world games are defined by these interactions, so teams spend time resolving conflicts that would not appear in a linear sequence.
Creative iteration is part of production
Large studios repeatedly revise missions, characters and mechanics to reach the intended tone and quality. A scene can be rewritten after a performance is recorded; a mission can be redesigned after playtesting exposes a pacing problem; a system can be simplified when it produces unreliable interactions. Those revisions consume calendar time even when the final player experience looks effortless.
Worldwide teams require synchronization
Rockstar’s teams work across studios. Distributed production allows more people and specialties to contribute in parallel, but it adds handoffs, build management, review cycles and communication requirements. A feature is not finished when one office completes its part; it must be integrated into shared tools and builds, reviewed by other disciplines and tested in the broader game.
Technology and content advance together
Engine and tool work continues alongside content creation. Streaming, animation systems, artificial-intelligence behavior, rendering and performance improvements can change the constraints under which artists and designers work. Conversely, a new design requirement can force a tool or technology revision. This feedback loop is one reason a project cannot be scheduled as a simple sequence of independent tasks.
Polish is a major phase
Take-Two and Rockstar have repeatedly emphasized additional polish and the need to realize the creative vision. Near the end, teams are integrating the complete game, validating many possible player paths, improving consistency and addressing quality issues that only appear when systems interact at full scale. The final months are therefore not limited to fixing isolated defects.

How to estimate a project of this size without misleading yourself
1. Define the scope before choosing a year count
List the world size, number of locations, mission structure, character and vehicle variety, systemic features, platforms and language requirements. “AAA open world” is not a specification; two projects with that label can have very different workloads.
2. Separate the clocks
Track concept, pre-production, full production and final integration separately. Record which disciplines are active in each period. This prevents a writer’s early start or a technology prototype from being mistaken for the beginning of full-team production.
3. Map parallel work and dependencies
Identify what can proceed concurrently and what must wait. Art production may run alongside engineering, but a mission may depend on a stable AI behavior or animation pipeline. The critical path is determined by dependencies, not by the number of departments on an organizational chart.

Schedule review, playtesting, rewrites, performance work and integration explicitly. If the plan assumes that the first implementation is final, it is not a realistic plan for a game built around systemic interaction.
5. Treat polish as production, not overtime
A sustainable schedule includes quality work in the calendar. Kolbe’s comments about avoiding a crunch-based finish reflect this principle: reducing extreme overtime changes how time is managed, but it does not remove the work required to reach a shippable build.
What “100-hour weeks” does and does not mean
The frequently repeated claim about 100-hour weeks needs precise attribution. Houser’s 2018 clarification concerned the four-person senior writing team. He said that group worked for seven years and then had three intense weeks at the end, and he explicitly said Rockstar did not expect everyone else to work that way.
That statement should not be converted into a claim that the entire RDR2 workforce spent seven years on 100-hour weeks. It describes a short final push by a small writing group. Kolbe later said GTA VI was being handled differently, with policies that included paid time off or additional pay for extra hours, while noting that the new system was not perfect.
How large does the team need to be?
There is no verified public total for the number of developers assigned to GTA VI, and the available statements do not provide a complete RDR2 headcount. Take-Two’s 2025 annual-report material listed 10,096 full-time research-and-development employees across the company. That is a company-wide figure, not the size of the GTA VI team, so it cannot be used to calculate the game’s staffing.
What can be said is that a project of this scope needs many disciplines working together: design, writing, engineering, tools, world art, character art, animation, audio, cinematics, production, quality assurance, localization and platform support. The management challenge is coordinating those specialties and their dependencies, not reaching a particular employee number.
A larger team can increase throughput when work is well partitioned, but it also increases review, communication and integration costs. Adding people late does not automatically preserve the schedule if newcomers need to learn the tools, codebase and creative direction.
Does GTA VI’s development take longer than RDR2?
There is not enough verified information to make a precise apples-to-apples comparison. GTA VI has a reported full-production marker in 2020 and a cited 2026 release window, which is about six years. RDR2 has Houser’s seven-year writing-team figure, but that measures a different discipline and does not establish the full project’s elapsed production time.
The fairest conclusion is that both games belong to the same six-to-eight-year class of active-production projects, while their published milestones measure different things. GTA VI may feel longer because its 2020 milestone is explicit and its 2026 window is public; RDR2’s most famous number is attached to four writers rather than the entire development organization.
What remains unknown
- GTA VI’s exact all-in start date, including any concept or prototype work before 2020.
- The final GTA VI budget.
- The total number of developers assigned to GTA VI over its entire life.
- A verified whole-project calendar for RDR2 that can be directly compared with the seven-year writing duration.
Rumored budgets, anonymous staffing estimates and assumptions that every Rockstar employee followed the same schedule should not be presented as established facts.
Why the long timelines matter to players
Long development does not guarantee a great game, but it reflects the amount of coordination required when a project promises a dense world and many interacting systems. Players see a finished mission or a seamless city; the studio must build and validate the invisible technology, content pipelines and fallback behavior that make those moments reliable.
For GTA VI, the strongest public evidence points to roughly six years of earnest full production through the cited 2026 window, with earlier work possible. For RDR2, the evidence supports seven years for a four-person senior writing team and a three-week final push, not seven identical years for the entire studio. Taken together, those facts support a practical expectation of about six to eight years of active production for games at this scale, plus whatever concept and pre-production work comes before the formal milestone.
