NETGEAR recommends treating four to five years as a practical point to review a router—not as a fixed expiration date. Whether to replace yours depends more on its security-update status, reliability, coverage and ability to meet your household’s needs. Check the exact model’s End of Service status before deciding.
How long do NETGEAR routers last?
NETGEAR’s consumer guidance uses around four to five years as a checkpoint for reviewing a router’s condition and performance. That is a recommendation to reassess, not a measured average lifespan or a promise that a router will fail at a particular age. A router may remain useful longer, while one that has lost security support or developed persistent problems may need replacement sooner.
The more important question is whether your model still receives firmware updates and reliably serves your home. NETGEAR’s End of Service (EOS) information is model-specific, so check the exact model rather than judging by age alone.

Under NETGEAR’s general policy, a product reaches EOS three years after its last sale date. The last sale date can depend on the product and, in some cases, its region or SKU; the policy also notes exceptions for certain carrier or network-operator and enterprise products. Verify the applicable listing for your router.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
NETGEAR says products at EOS no longer receive firmware updates, including security updates. A router may continue to connect after EOS, but continued operation does not mean it will receive new security fixes. If the model no longer has security support, replacing it is a prudent choice, especially for a device that manages your home network.
How to tell whether the router or something else is causing trouble
Slow or unstable internet does not automatically mean the router is failing. Check whether the issue affects every device, whether it occurs over wired connections as well as WiFi, and whether performance changes near the router. Also consider your internet plan, provider outages, interference and placement.

- Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
- This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
- Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
- Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports
- Check support and firmware: Look up the exact model’s EOS status and install available firmware updates for that model. Follow NETGEAR’s update instructions; do not turn off the router or interrupt an update while it is installing.
- Compare connections: Test a wired connection, then test WiFi near the router. If only one device has trouble, investigate that device before blaming the router.
- Check power: Confirm that the router uses its supplied power adapter and try another outlet. If interruptions or power loss may be involved, NETGEAR suggests considering a UPS as a diagnostic or continuity measure; this does not establish that a UPS extends router life.
- Reboot for basic connectivity issues: NETGEAR’s instructions say to turn the router off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. On a model without a power button, unplug it, wait 10 seconds and reconnect it. Follow the directions for your model; a reboot preserves WiFi settings.
- Check the provider connection: Look for service interruptions and confirm your plan’s limits. If you use an ISP gateway, check whether the provider requires it to stay connected before replacing or changing equipment.
When should you replace a NETGEAR router?
Replacement makes sense when security updates have ended, persistent hardware problems remain after reasonable checks, or the router cannot meet your home’s coverage or connection needs. Age alone is not enough to establish that it has failed.
NETGEAR’s warranty is separate from useful life and varies by product and country. Its support page, updated in 2026, lists one year for new products in the United States and Canada, two years for new products in several named countries, and generally 90 days for refurbished products in the listed examples. Check the applicable terms for your model and location; warranty length does not determine when a router stops working.

Will a new router make your internet faster?
It can improve local performance if the old router is the bottleneck, but it cannot increase the speed supplied by your internet plan. Before buying, confirm your provider’s equipment requirements and whether replacing an ISP gateway would actually remove an equipment fee. A router purchase may not eliminate a fee if the provider requires its gateway to remain in service.
