There is no fixed number of years that Apple guarantees every iPhone will receive software updates. As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s compatibility list for iOS 27 reaches back to iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation). If your iPhone still gets the updates available for its model, works reliably and supports the apps and features you need, its age alone is not a reason to replace it.

How long does Apple support an iPhone?

Apple does not publish one universal support term that applies to every iPhone. The clearest current guide is the compatibility list for the latest major iOS release: as of October 13, 2026, iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later, along with iPhone SE (2nd generation) and iPhone SE (3rd generation). The list is a snapshot of the current release, not a prediction of how long any model will remain compatible. See Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide.

Apple’s June 2024 Longevity, by Design report describes major operating-system feature updates reaching as far back as six years from a device’s introduction. That is a description of Apple’s track record, not a promise that every iPhone will receive six years of major iOS releases. Models can differ, and the supported-device list can change when Apple releases a new major iOS version. For your own phone, check the current list rather than calculating a guaranteed end date from its launch year.

That distinction matters because “support” can mean different things: access to the newest major iOS version, a security fix for an older version, or continued day-to-day usefulness. Compatibility with a major release tells you whether a model is on that release’s supported list; it does not, by itself, promise that every new feature will be available on every compatible model. Nor does a model’s absence from the latest list tell you that it will stop working immediately.

Major iOS updates and security updates are not the same

A major iOS update brings the current operating-system version and its feature changes to compatible models. A phone that cannot install the newest major version may nevertheless receive a critical security update for an older iOS version. Apple says it strives to provide critical security updates even after a product can no longer run its newest operating system. That is an expressed effort, not a schedule or a guarantee that every older model or software branch will receive fixes for a known period.

Apple’s examples show why it is useful to distinguish the two kinds of support. Its 2024 longevity report points to an iOS 15 update in March 2024 for iPhone 6s, a model introduced in 2015. More recently, Apple’s September 28, 2026 bulletin for iOS 26.7.1 listed iPhone 11 and later while iOS 27 was current. The bulletin addressed a CoreGraphics issue; Apple said it was aware of a report that the issue may have been exploited against specific targeted individuals on versions before iOS 27. These dated examples demonstrate that security fixes can reach beyond the newest major release, but they do not establish how long Apple will maintain a particular older version. Read the iOS 26.7.1 security bulletin for the specific update details.

For everyday use, current major-version compatibility is a useful sign, but it is not the only security consideration. Apple calls keeping software up to date one of the most important steps for maintaining product security. Install updates offered for your model, and do not assume that an older phone is receiving fixes simply because Apple has supported other older phones in the past. In its September 15, 2026 update guide, Apple says: “Keeping your software up to date is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your Apple product’s security.”

Check whether your iPhone can update

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update. The screen shows the installed iOS version and whether an update is available for your device.
  2. If an update is offered, review the on-screen information and follow the prompts to install it. Apple recommends keeping software current for security.
  3. To review automatic updating, open Settings > General > Software Update and look for the automatic update settings. The available options are shown on the device.
  4. Compare your model with Apple’s current compatibility list for the latest major iOS release. As of October 13, 2026, that is iOS 27, whose list includes iPhone 11 and newer models plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation).

If no major-version upgrade appears, that alone does not tell you whether the phone is malfunctioning: it may be outside the current compatibility list. Check for any update offered to your installed version, and use Apple’s dated security information to understand what a particular release addresses. Do not infer a future update schedule from one older-model security release.

It is worth repeating this check when Apple publishes a new major iOS compatibility list, since the oldest compatible model can change from one release to the next. Keep the date attached to any answer about which iPhones are currently supported: “iPhone 11 and later” describes the iOS 27 list as of October 13, 2026, not a permanent cutoff for future iOS versions.

Check battery health before replacing the phone

A battery that no longer lasts as long or supports peak performance can make an otherwise useful iPhone feel ready for replacement. Battery Health provides information about maximum capacity and peak performance. Find it under Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Consider what the information says alongside your actual experience: the figures are context for a decision, not an automatic replacement rule.

Apple’s battery design targets differ by model family. Under ideal conditions, iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles; iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% after 1,000 complete cycles. These are design specifications, not a promise about an individual phone’s battery health or a threshold at which service is mandatory. Actual results depend on use and charging.

A complete charge cycle is part of Apple’s specification, but the cycle figures should not be used as a countdown to replacement. Two people with the same model can see different battery results because actual battery condition depends on use and charging. The practical question is whether battery life or peak performance is limiting your own use, not whether a particular cycle count or capacity number has been reached.

If the battery is significantly degraded but the phone remains useful in other respects, Apple says its battery can be replaced by an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The available service and its cost depend on your circumstances; Apple’s guidance cited here does not establish a price. Compare the cost of service with the phone’s reliability, software compatibility and likely usefulness to you before deciding.

Decide whether to keep, repair or upgrade

There is no single age or battery-capacity figure that means every iPhone should be replaced. Choose among keeping the phone, repairing it or upgrading based on the problem you are trying to solve.

Keep it if it still meets your needs

  • It can install the updates available for its model.
  • It works dependably for your everyday tasks.
  • Your important apps and features continue to work acceptably.
  • Battery life and performance are adequate, or the inconvenience is manageable.

A phone does not become a poor choice merely because newer models are available. If it remains dependable and compatible with the software and apps you need, there is no software-age rule that requires replacement.

Repair it when a fixable fault is the main issue

Battery service is worth considering when reduced battery performance is the main drawback and the rest of the phone remains useful. The same decision logic applies to another repairable fault: weigh the service cost against how long you expect to keep using the phone and whether it still supports your needs. The evidence here confirms Apple-authorized battery replacement as an option, but it does not establish repair prices or the economics of other repairs.

Before choosing service, ask whether the phone’s software compatibility, reliability and features will still be satisfactory after the repair. Replacing a battery can address battery-related limits; it does not make a model compatible with a newer major iOS release or resolve unrelated faults. If more than one limitation is affecting you, compare the combined repair needs and expected usefulness rather than focusing on a single component.

Upgrade when continued use creates a real problem

Replacement becomes more compelling when the phone no longer receives the current major iOS release and the missing updates or features matter to you; when essential apps or workflows no longer work acceptably; when reliability is poor; or when repair costs do not make sense for the useful life you expect to get from the device. These are practical decision criteria, not an official Apple rule that sets a required replacement age.

Compare the real choices, not just the phone’s age

If you are deciding between battery repair and buying another phone, put the actual options side by side. Consider the repair cost and the replacement cost available to you, then weigh them against software compatibility, battery condition, reliability, needed features and your data or storage needs. A repair may be the sensible choice when the phone is otherwise dependable; replacing it may be preferable when several limitations would remain after a battery change.

Make the comparison specific to your situation. Include how well the current phone performs the tasks you rely on, whether it can install updates available to its model, whether the battery is the main source of inconvenience, and what you would gain from a replacement. Check current local service and device prices rather than assuming a standard battery-replacement cost or trade-in value. The available figures vary by circumstance, and no universal price comparison answers the question for every owner.

Do not treat the 80% battery design targets as a universal service cutoff, or the six-year historical observation as a support promise. Neither number answers by itself whether your specific phone is worth keeping. The useful question is whether the device, after any reasonable repair, will continue to do the things you need with acceptable reliability and software support.

What the current iOS 27 cutoff tells you—and what it does not

As of October 13, 2026, iPhone 11 is the oldest standard iPhone family on Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility list; iPhone SE (2nd generation) is also included among the supported models. This is useful for checking compatibility now, but it should not be read as a forecast for iOS 28 or a guarantee of future security updates for models that later leave the list.

Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions. That establishes a current replacement generation, but whether it is the right option depends on your needs and local availability. The update and battery guidance above can help determine whether you need a replacement at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do iPhones get software updates?

Apple does not guarantee a single number of years for every iPhone. Its June 2024 longevity report describes major feature updates reaching as far back as six years from a device’s introduction, but that is historical experience, not a promise. Check the current compatibility list for your model.

Is my iPhone too old to update?

Check Settings > General > Software Update to see whether an update is available for your device, then compare your model with Apple’s current compatibility list. As of October 13, 2026, iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). Older models may still receive a security update for an older iOS version, but Apple does not promise a fixed schedule.

Should I replace my iPhone battery or buy a new phone?

If battery life is the main problem and the phone remains reliable, compatible with the software available to it, and useful for your needs, consider battery service from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Compare the actual service and replacement costs, likely useful life, reliability, features and storage needs. Battery capacity alone does not require replacement.

Does an iPhone stop being secure when it cannot install the newest iOS?

Not necessarily. Apple has provided critical security updates for older software in some cases, including an iOS 15 update for iPhone 6s in March 2024. However, that history is not a guarantee that every older model or software branch will receive future fixes. Install the updates offered for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Apple’s support history is useful context, not a fixed lifespan promise. Check your model’s current iOS compatibility and install available updates; then assess reliability, app needs and battery health. Keep the phone if it still works for you, consider authorized battery service if the battery is the main issue, and upgrade when missing support, poor reliability or repair economics create a real problem.
