Grid-scale batteries do not have one guaranteed lifespan. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2022 assessment found that most of the lithium-ion literature it reviewed put system life at 10–20 years. NREL’s 2024 utility-scale model uses a 15-year life with battery augmentation intended to maintain rated capacity. These are a literature range and a modelling assumption—not a promise that every project, battery chemistry, or original cell will last that long.
How long do grid-scale batteries last?
A practical starting estimate for a lithium-ion grid battery is the DOE’s 10–20-year literature range. The range is broad because reported lifetimes depend on what is being counted, how the battery is operated, what threshold defines end of life, and whether the system is maintained or augmented. DOE also notes that many estimates fall toward the lower end and include maintenance and replacement needs.
NREL’s 2024 utility-scale battery model uses a 15-year lifetime and includes augmentation costs intended to let the system operate at rated capacity over that period. Its cost and performance basis assumes approximately one cycle per day. This is a planning input for a model, not an observed lifetime result or a prediction that all grid batteries will retain their original capacity for 15 years.

What the word “lifetime” can mean
Published lifetime figures are only comparable when they describe the same thing. A cycle-life figure may count charge-and-discharge use under a specified depth of discharge; a calendar-life figure concerns aging over time. A whole-project estimate may also account for maintenance, augmentation, or replacement. A warranty term describes the terms offered for a particular product or project, not necessarily the point at which a battery stops functioning.
- Cell or pack life: How long the original cells or packs meet a stated performance threshold.
- Calendar life: The time-related aging pathway, including capacity loss that occurs even when a battery is not cycling.
- Cycle life: The use-related aging pathway associated with charge and discharge.
- System or project life: How long the installation can provide its intended service, potentially with maintenance, augmentation, or replacement.
- Warranty duration: A contractual term whose conditions and limits vary; it should not be read as a universal technical lifespan.
End of life also needs a definition. A source may count the point at which capacity or performance falls below a threshold, but the figures in the DOE and NREL summaries do not establish one shared threshold for every estimate. Without the threshold, chemistry, usage conditions, and treatment of replacements, a lifespan number alone is incomplete.
Calendar aging and cycle aging are different
Calendar degradation continues with time
NREL’s System Advisor Model (SAM) help documentation defines calendar degradation as a reduction in battery capacity due to age, regardless of how the battery is used. In other words, not dispatching energy does not make a battery immune to aging. SAM describes empirical lithium-ion calendar-aging models that account for time, temperature, and state of charge.

This is why a cycle count cannot, by itself, tell you how long a grid installation will last. A battery may accumulate calendar aging while it is idle or lightly used, and a low number of cycles does not erase the effects of time and operating conditions.

Cycle degradation is associated with charge and discharge
Cycle degradation is linked to charge-and-discharge events. How much use a reported cycle count represents depends on its accompanying conditions, including depth of discharge and operating pattern. A count detached from those conditions is not a transferable lifespan promise.
For example, DOE’s 2022 assessment includes an assumption of 3,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge alongside a 10-year calendar-life assumption. That is an assessment assumption, not a universal current specification or a result that applies unchanged to every battery chemistry, project, or dispatch schedule. The figures describe different aging dimensions; they should not be collapsed into a single guarantee.
The shorter pathway can determine service life
NREL’s Storage Futures Study explains that, under its definitions when cycling occurs, actual lifetime is determined by the lesser of calendar life or cycle life. A system can therefore reach its relevant limit through elapsed time or through use, depending on its conditions. Looking only at the cycle-life number can miss the calendar-life constraint; looking only at years can miss a demanding duty cycle.

Degradation reflects interacting conditions rather than one universal driver. NREL’s battery lifespan research identifies temperature, operating windows, charge and discharge rates, storage environment, and cycling patterns, alongside coupled electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical degradation. The relative effect of any one factor is not established as identical across chemistries or projects.

- Temperature: Temperature is an input to calendar-aging models and a factor in battery lifespan research. A lifetime estimate made under one thermal condition should not be assumed to describe a different operating or storage environment.
- State-of-charge history: SAM’s calendar-aging model categories account for state of charge as well as time and temperature. Thus, an estimate that leaves out state-of-charge assumptions may omit part of the basis for its calendar-aging result.
- Operating window: The range within which a battery is operated is among the factors NREL identifies. Estimates based on different windows may not describe equivalent use.
- Depth of discharge: Depth of discharge states how much of the battery’s capacity is used in a discharge. It is essential context for a cycle count: DOE’s 3,500-cycle assessment assumption, for instance, is specifically paired with 80% depth of discharge.
- Charge and discharge rates: NREL lists these rates as relevant conditions. A cycle count without rate assumptions does not fully characterize the operating basis.
- Frequency and pattern of cycling: How often, and in what pattern, a system cycles is part of the lifetime context. NREL’s 2024 cost and performance basis assumes approximately one cycle per day; that usage assumption belongs to that model basis, not every grid battery.
- Storage environment: NREL identifies the storage environment as another influence. Do not transfer a result between environments without checking whether the source’s conditions match.
These factors can interact with electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical degradation. The evidence summarized here does not give a universal formula assigning a fixed share of capacity loss to each factor. It is more accurate to treat each published lifetime as conditional on a combination of design and operating assumptions than to rank the influences as if one factor always dominates.
How augmentation and replacement change the answer
Augmentation means adding battery capacity to a system as its existing capacity changes; replacement means replacing some or all cells or packs. These interventions can make the useful life of a project different from the life of its original cells. NREL’s 2024 utility-scale baseline models augmentation costs over a 15-year life, with the aim of maintaining rated capacity. NREL’s Storage Futures Study also notes that replacing some or all cells or packs can extend system life.
That does not mean an installation keeps its original cells indefinitely, nor does a modelled augmentation plan guarantee a particular project outcome. It means a system-level lifespan must be read together with the maintenance and replacement strategy behind it. Ask whether a quoted number describes the original battery, the capacity available to the project, or the installation’s planned service period.
How to compare lifetime estimates and warranty figures
When two sources appear to disagree, compare their definitions and assumptions before deciding that one is wrong. DOE’s 2022 assessment reports a spread in published life-year and cycle estimates and treats maintenance and replacement as relevant to system operation. NREL’s 15-year figure is a modelling input with augmentation, not a directly comparable statement about unaugmented original-cell life.

- Identify what is being measured. Is the claim about calendar life, cycle life, original cells or packs, the whole battery system, or a project that can receive replacements?
- Find the end-of-life criterion. Check what capacity or performance threshold ends the estimate. If the source does not establish one, do not assume it matches another source’s threshold.
- Check the battery and use conditions. Look for chemistry and system design, depth of discharge, cycle frequency, charge and discharge rates, temperature, state-of-charge history, operating windows, and storage environment.
- Check what happens as capacity changes. Determine whether the estimate includes augmentation, partial replacement, full replacement, or no replacement.
- Classify the number. A literature range, a model input, a warranty example, and an observed result are different kinds of evidence. Do not turn one into another.
DOE’s 2022 assessment cites examples of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) warranty terms of 10–15 years or 10,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. These are examples of warranty terms reported by the assessment; warranty terms vary and the figures are not a current, universal promise for LFP systems. The cycle count is meaningful only with its stated 80% depth of discharge and the applicable warranty conditions.
| Figure | Source and basis | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 10–20 years | DOE, 2022; range in which most of the reviewed lithium-ion literature placed system life. | A literature range, with many estimates toward the lower end and maintenance and replacement needs included in the discussion. Not a guarantee for a particular installation. |
| 3,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge; 10-year calendar life | DOE, 2022; an assessment assumption. | Illustrates why cycle and calendar assumptions should be read together. Not a universal product specification. |
| 15 years | NREL, 2024; utility-scale model lifetime with augmentation costs intended to maintain rated capacity. | A planning assumption for the model, not a prediction of every project’s original-cell life. |
| Approximately one cycle per day | NREL, 2024; usage assumption in the cited utility-scale cost and performance basis. | Provides context for that model basis; actual projects may have different cycling patterns. |
| 10–15 years or 10,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge | DOE, 2022; examples of LFP warranty terms. | Examples only. Terms vary and are not a universal current warranty or lifespan promise. |
What a useful lifespan estimate should include
A statement such as “this grid battery lasts 15 years” is not enough to evaluate a project. A useful estimate makes clear whether it is a technical model, a warranty, a literature summary, or an observed result; what system and chemistry it covers; and whether it assumes augmentation or replacement. It also states how the end-of-life threshold is defined and describes the usage and environmental conditions that shape aging.
If one of those details is absent, the number may still be useful as a planning reference, but its scope is narrower than a universal lifespan claim. In particular, compare estimates only after aligning the meaning of “life,” the capacity threshold, calendar and cycle assumptions, and the treatment of aging capacity. The DOE range and NREL model are best used as context for those questions, not as competing guarantees.
