There is no reliable, representative user survey establishing an average Blu-ray player lifespan. Individual reports range from trouble after heavy use to optical drives still working after roughly a decade or longer, but those anecdotes cannot support a dependable number of years for a typical player.
Why there is no reliable user-reported average
The available owner reports are scattered experiences, not a survey of a representative group of Blu-ray player owners. They do not show how many devices were used, how often they failed, or how many were still working. Without that information, calculating an average would give anecdotes more weight than they can support.
Some reports also concern computer optical drives used to read or rip discs, rather than standalone players connected to a television. Those devices offer relevant context about variation in optical-drive experience, but they are not a direct measure of living-room player lifespan.

In a MakeMKV community discussion, one poster said an LG WH16NS40 drive began showing read errors after about 220 movies and four TV box sets, and asked whether that was premature. Other commenters described drives that continued working after several years, including one said to be roughly ten years old. A Yahoo Tech search result also recounts Sony BDP-S5100 owners reporting that their players stopped working after eight years and fifteen years. Those are secondary-source-reported anecdotes; the underlying article was not available in full for independent checking. See the Yahoo Tech result.
Warranty coverage is not a lifespan estimate
Panasonic USA lists one year of parts coverage and 90 days of labor mail-in service for Blu-ray and DVD players. Those terms describe the coverage period in the U.S.; they do not mean a player is expected to last one year, or that failure is likely once coverage ends. What to do if your player has a problem
Start with the support information for the exact model and region. Panasonic Japan, for example, provides model-specific repair, troubleshooting, parts, and accessories information for the DMP-BD90S. Support and parts availability can vary by model and market. Panasonic Japan DMP-BD90S support.
If repair is an option, compare its quoted cost and availability with replacement. Consider the disc formats and region support you need, the connections required by your television or receiver, and whether streaming features matter to you. A 2021 policy filing by DVD CCA and AACS LA argued that DVD and Blu-ray players are not often repaired and consumers may replace broken units; it is an interested-party submission, not independent reliability research or current repair-price guidance.
