There is no Android-wide update lifespan. Support is set by the manufacturer for each model and generation, and the clock may start when the phone first goes on sale—not when you buy it. As of October 2026, Google promises seven years of operating-system and security updates for Pixel 8 and later, while Samsung advertises up to seven years of security updates for eligible Galaxy devices. Those maximums do not apply to every Android phone, and OS upgrades, security patches, and feature releases must be counted separately.

What “software updates” means on an Android phone

Manufacturers use several different kinds of updates. Treating them as one number is the fastest way to overestimate how long a phone remains supported.

Android OS upgrades

An OS upgrade is a major Android version change. Samsung generally describes its equivalent upgrades as Android OS and One UI generations. A promise of four generations means four major version steps under the policy; it is not the same as four years of security patches.

Security updates

Security updates fix vulnerabilities and may be delivered without changing the Android version. Google normally publishes an Android Security Bulletin on the first Monday of each month, except when that Monday is a holiday. Publication is the date the fixes are announced, not a guarantee that every phone receives a patch that day. Manufacturers and carriers test, schedule, and distribute firmware on their own timelines.

Feature updates and feature drops

Feature releases add capabilities without necessarily moving the phone to a new Android version. Google calls its Pixel enhancements “Feature Drops.” They are delivered to supported Pixel devices, but they do not add another OS upgrade to the phone’s promised total.

Current published commitments from Google and Samsung

The following figures are policy ceilings for specified devices, not an average for the Android market.

Manufacturer policy OS-upgrade commitment Security-update commitment Important qualification
Google Pixel 8 and later Seven years of OS updates Seven years of security updates Google counts from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the United States, not from the owner’s purchase date. Regional and carrier eligibility can differ.
Samsung eligible Galaxy devices (current policy) Not stated as one universal number in the current security-policy wording Up to seven years “Eligible” is model-specific. Samsung lists monthly, quarterly, or biannual delivery schedules for different devices.
Samsung select devices covered by the 2022 announcement Up to four generations of Android and One UI upgrades Up to five years The announcement applied to select devices and should not be expanded to every Galaxy model.

Google’s seven-year Pixel policy and Samsung’s “up to” language describe different product scopes. They cannot be used to claim that all Pixel phones or all Galaxy phones receive the maximum period.

Why the start date changes the answer

Support is usually measured from a manufacturer-defined event. For Pixel 8 and later, Google specifies first availability on the US Google Store. If you buy a phone from remaining inventory years after that date, you do not receive a fresh seven-year term.

Use this calculation when comparing a phone:

  1. Find the policy’s start event and date for the exact model.
  2. Find the promised end of OS support and the promised end of security support. They may be different.
  3. Subtract the date you plan to buy from each end date to estimate the support remaining at purchase.

For an illustration, if a policy starts on 1 June 2024 and provides five years of security support, the stated end is 1 June 2029. Buying on 1 June 2027 leaves about two years, even though the phone is new to you. That arithmetic is only an example; use the manufacturer’s published date for the device you are considering.

How to check whether your exact phone is still supported

Check the installed Android version and patch level

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open About phone (on some interfaces, About device).
  3. Read Android version and Android security update. The labels and location can vary by manufacturer.
  4. Record the full model name or model number, storage variant if shown, and whether the phone is carrier-branded.

Google’s Pixel instructions specifically direct owners to Settings to find the Android version and security-update level. A recent patch date proves what is installed; it does not by itself prove how long the manufacturer will continue support.

Match the model to the manufacturer’s policy

  1. Open the manufacturer’s official support or security-policy page.
  2. Search for the exact commercial model and generation, not merely the series name. “Galaxy S” or “Pixel” is too broad for a reliable end date.
  3. Check the stated start-date rule, OS-upgrade count, security-support duration, and regional or carrier exclusions.
  4. Check the device’s delivery cadence. A monthly listing is different from a quarterly or biannual listing, but none guarantees same-day delivery after a bulletin is published.

Check for a pending update

Use Settings > System > Software update on many Android builds; Samsung devices commonly place it under Settings > Software update. Menu names differ, so use the Settings search field for “software update” if necessary. Install over a reliable Wi-Fi connection with adequate battery charge, and keep a current backup before a major upgrade.

How update delivery actually works

Google publishes vulnerability information in its Android Security Bulletins. A phone maker then incorporates the relevant fixes into firmware for particular models. Carriers may add testing or approval for devices sold through their networks. As a result, two phones running the same Android release can show different security-patch dates.

Samsung’s published schedules group Galaxy devices into monthly, quarterly, and biannual security-update tracks. A quarterly or biannual schedule is a planned cadence, not evidence that the phone is permanently unsupported. Conversely, a monthly schedule does not mean a patch arrives on the bulletin’s publication date.

Feature Drops and similar releases can arrive between major Android upgrades. They may be valuable, but count them as feature delivery rather than additional OS generations when comparing support promises.

What to compare before buying an Android phone

Comparison question Why it matters What to record
How many OS generations are promised? Determines how long the phone is expected to receive major Android or One UI changes. Number of generations or years, plus the covered model.
How long are security patches promised? A phone can stop receiving OS upgrades while still getting vulnerability fixes, or lose both at different times. Years of security support and the policy’s start date.
What is the delivery cadence? Monthly, quarterly, and biannual schedules affect how quickly fixes normally arrive. The manufacturer’s schedule for that exact model.
Which market and variant are covered? US, international, unlocked, and carrier variants may have different availability or timing. Region, carrier, model number, and eligibility wording.
How much support remains when you buy? A late purchase can consume part of the promised term before you activate the phone. Policy end date minus your planned purchase date.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“Android phones get seven years of updates.”

That statement is too broad. Seven years is a published maximum for Pixel 8 and later, measured under Google’s stated start rule, and a security-support maximum for eligible Samsung devices. Older or different models can have shorter commitments.

Counting security patches as Android upgrades

A security patch can leave the Android version unchanged. Track the Android version history and the security-patch history in separate columns when evaluating a phone.

Assuming the purchase date starts the clock

Google’s Pixel policy starts at first US Google Store availability. Other manufacturers may define a different event. Always locate that rule before calculating remaining support.

Using a bulletin date as a delivery promise

The Android Security Bulletin’s first-Monday publication pattern is a publishing schedule. Your phone’s actual firmware date depends on the manufacturer, model, region, carrier, and testing process.

Applying a policy to an entire product family

“Eligible devices,” “select devices,” and generation-specific wording are limits, not marketing decoration. Verify the exact model number and market before relying on a stated maximum.

Assuming a feature drop extends the support term

Feature Drops add functions to supported devices; they do not automatically add another major Android version or extend the contractual support end date.

What happens after official support ends

When a phone reaches the end of its promised OS or security period, it may continue to work, but there is no longer a manufacturer commitment to deliver future fixes. App developers can also raise minimum Android requirements over time, and banking or workplace applications may eventually stop supporting an old release. Those software-compatibility effects are separate from the manufacturer’s published update term.

If you keep an unsupported phone, reduce exposure: install apps only from trusted sources, use a strong screen lock, remove software you no longer need, keep backups, and avoid using the device for high-risk tasks when a supported replacement is practical. These steps reduce risk but do not substitute for security patches.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose the model with the longest verified security term if you plan to keep the phone for many years.
  • Give OS-upgrade count separate weight if new Android functions, accessibility changes, or platform APIs matter to you.
  • Prefer a clearly documented start date and model list over an impressive but unqualified “up to” statement.
  • For a discounted older phone, calculate remaining support rather than comparing the original promise.
  • Confirm regional and carrier details before treating a manufacturer’s headline policy as your own phone’s guarantee.

The bottom line for 2026 buyers

Android support is model-specific, not a single ecosystem-wide number. Google’s documented policy gives Pixel 8 and later seven years of OS and security updates from first US Google Store availability. Samsung offers up to seven years of security updates for eligible Galaxy devices, while its 2022 commitment for select devices was up to four Android/One UI generations and up to five years of security updates. To know what your phone will receive, identify the exact model and variant, read the manufacturer’s start-date and eligibility terms, and keep OS upgrades, security patches, and feature drops in separate counts.
