It depends on which loads the battery supports and how much usable energy it can deliver. A conventional data-center UPS battery is often intended to bridge a short gap—Schneider Electric described five minutes as typical for cloud and colocation facilities in 2020. A purpose-built battery energy storage system (BESS) can be designed to discharge for hours, but neither figure is a universal runtime for every data center. The practical estimate is usable battery energy divided by the load being served, adjusted for system limits, reserves, and operating conditions.
First, distinguish a UPS battery from a longer-duration BESS
“Battery backup” can describe systems with different jobs. A data-center UPS combines power electronics, switches, and stored energy to maintain continuity when its input power fails. In many facilities, its battery is a bridge: it supports the load while the site transfers to another power source, such as a generator, or provides time for an orderly shutdown if backup sources are unavailable.
Google describes its data-center batteries as providing short-duration power through transitions between AC sources and during transient disturbances. Its description also notes the role of batteries in a clean shutdown if both primary and alternate sources remain unavailable for an extended period. That is a continuity and protection function, not a promise that the battery will run a whole facility for hours.
A BESS is a broader energy-storage installation that can be configured for longer discharge and uses such as peak shaving, shifting energy use, or providing grid services. It may be integrated with a data center, but the label alone does not mean it can power the entire site during an outage. Its actual role depends on the supported loads, discharge power, controls, reserve settings, and electrical integration.

The distinction matters because the phrase “battery runtime” is incomplete without the system’s job. A UPS bridging to a generator, a battery protecting only critical IT equipment, and a BESS expected to serve the facility during a prolonged outage are different design cases.
How to estimate runtime
For a first-pass estimate, divide the usable energy available to the load by the load’s power demand:
Estimated runtime in hours ≈ usable energy (MWh) ÷ supported load (MW)
For example, 10 MWh of usable energy serving a constant 5 MW load implies about two hours in an idealized calculation. The result is arithmetic for illustration, not a performance claim about a particular battery or data center. It does not account for conversion losses, reserve limits, changing demand, or other operating constraints.

The same relationship can be rearranged to help scope a requirement: required usable energy in MWh is approximately the load in MW multiplied by the desired runtime in hours. Thus, a constant 5 MW supported load for two hours would require about 10 MWh usable under the simplified calculation. A real design must account for system conditions rather than treating that result as a procurement specification.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) describes battery duration as the ratio of energy capacity to power capacity: the time a battery can contribute at nameplate power before depletion. In practical discussions, be clear whether the energy figure is nameplate capacity or energy actually available to the supported load. Those figures need not be identical.
Worked examples, not product specifications
| Usable energy | Supported load | Idealized runtime | What the calculation assumes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 MWh | 5 MW | 2 hours | Constant load and no allowance for losses, reserves, or system limits |
| 10 MWh | 2 MW | 5 hours | The battery serves only the stated 2 MW load under the same simplified assumptions |
| 10 MWh | 10 MW | 1 hour | The full stated load is supported continuously under the same simplified assumptions |
These examples show why a battery’s energy rating alone does not answer “how long?” The same stored energy produces different runtime when the supported power demand changes. They also do not establish that a given installation can supply the listed load: both its available power and its energy must suit the design.
Which load is the battery expected to serve?
Runtime is meaningful only after defining “load.” A data center may have a critical IT load, other essential facility loads, and less critical loads. Depending on the design, a battery may support IT equipment alone or a broader set of systems such as cooling, pumps, and lighting. Supporting more equipment increases the demand on stored energy and can reduce duration.

Ask whether a quoted MW figure covers the IT load, selected critical loads, or the whole facility. Also ask whether the figure is the load at the battery output or elsewhere in the power path, and whether the estimate assumes a steady demand. Without those boundaries, two runtime claims may appear comparable while describing different services.
Load can also change during an outage. The simple equation assumes constant demand; if demand rises, the same usable energy is consumed sooner. If the system serves only a defined critical subset, its runtime calculation should use that subset’s expected demand rather than the data center’s total power consumption.
What published duration figures mean
| Figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Five minutes | Schneider Electric’s 2020 description of typical battery runtime in cloud and colocation data centers | A vendor’s broad characterization, not a universal requirement, guarantee, or runtime for an individual site |
| Around two hours, with an increasing number of projects at four hours or more | International Energy Agency (IEA) 2026 discussion of utility-scale battery storage duration | A power-system deployment trend, not a runtime claim for a data-center UPS or any specific BESS |
| Historical U.S. capacity figures for 2020–2021 | EIA’s 2022 explainer on utility-scale battery duration | Historical context for how duration varies by application, not current market statistics or data-center runtime data |
These figures answer different questions. Schneider Electric’s five-minute description concerns UPS design in a stated class of data centers. The IEA figures describe utility-scale storage deployment trends. They cannot be substituted for one another or applied directly to a named facility. The available source material does not establish a universal runtime or a representative measurement for all data-center BESS installations.

This describes a division of roles, not a guarantee that every site has generators, that they will start successfully, or that every facility has the same battery-to-generator transition time.

How the battery fits into the outage plan
A battery’s duration is one part of the facility’s power architecture. For a bridge-to-generator design, the important operational question is whether the battery can support the intended load during the transition and what happens if the alternate source is delayed or unavailable. For a longer outage role, the design must also specify how long the battery is expected to serve the load and how the facility responds as stored energy approaches its reserve limit.
Do not infer outage capability from a battery’s presence. A BESS used for peak management or energy shifting may not be configured to supply the data center during a grid outage. Likewise, an installation sized to support only critical equipment should not be described as powering the whole facility. The supported loads, available discharge power, controls, reserves, and integration all affect what the system can do.
The UPS also has a power-quality and continuity role beyond its nominal energy duration. DOE guidance identifies equipment, capacity, redundancy, power conditioning, and required outage uptime as relevant factors when selecting a UPS. A runtime estimate should therefore be considered alongside whether the system can deliver the needed power and maintain the required continuity for the equipment being protected.

- What is the role? Is the system intended for ride-through, transfer to a generator, clean shutdown, extended outage backup, peak management, or a grid service?
- Which loads are included? Is the stated load IT alone, selected critical facility equipment, or the whole data center?
- What energy is usable? Request usable MWh under the relevant operating conditions, not just an unqualified capacity figure.
- What power can it deliver? Confirm continuous MW available to the supported load and whether the figure applies at the required operating conditions.
- What reserves and limits apply? Find out whether a reserve is held back and what system operating limits affect the energy available during an outage.
- How is continuity protected? Understand the redundancy, power conditioning, controls, and integration with UPS equipment and other sources.
- What happens at the endpoint? Establish what the facility does when the battery reaches its reserve limit, including whether a generator is expected to carry the load or equipment is shut down cleanly.
- What uptime is actually required? Specify the duration objective for the supported equipment rather than relying on a generic “backup” label.
These questions follow the selection factors in U.S. Department of Energy guidance for UPS systems. They also prevent misleading comparisons: two systems with the same nominal MWh may differ in the loads they serve, the MW they can provide, their reserves, or their power architecture.

What can shorten the real-world runtime?
The energy-to-load calculation is an idealized starting point, not a field guarantee. Conversion losses mean not all stored energy necessarily reaches the supported load. Operating reserves or system limits may make some capacity unavailable. Demand may change during an outage, and the supported-load definition may exclude equipment that a reader assumes is included. A responsible runtime estimate should state its load boundary and the assumptions behind usable energy.
Battery capacity and runtime also need to be considered in the context of the selected equipment and its maintenance requirements. DOE advises maintaining UPS batteries according to manufacturer instructions. A battery module or extended battery pack is model-specific; its compatibility and actual runtime cannot be inferred from the fact that it is described as a UPS battery. The UPS model, connected load, configuration, and manufacturer compatibility information matter.
So, how long should you expect?
If the question is about a conventional UPS battery in a data center, think in terms of a short bridge rather than assuming hours. Schneider Electric’s 2020 five-minute figure is a useful qualified example for cloud and colocation facilities, but it is not a standard or guarantee. If the question is about a purpose-built BESS, duration can be longer, including hours, but the answer requires the usable MWh, the supported MW, and the operating design.
For a specific facility, the most useful answer is a design statement that names the loads being supported, the usable energy and available power, the intended duration, the reserve and loss assumptions, and the role of generators or other sources. Without those details, “the battery lasts X” is not a complete or reliably comparable claim.
