A 5,000 mAh battery could theoretically run a 500 mA load for 10 hours or a 1,000 mA load for 5 hours, provided capacity and current are measured on the same voltage basis. Those are ideal calculations, not promises about a phone or other device: real runtime depends on power use, conversion losses, temperature, and battery condition.
What a 5,000 mAh rating tells you
mAh means milliampere-hour. It measures how much electrical charge a battery can hold; it does not say how many hours a device will run. To estimate runtime, you also need to know how much current or power the device draws.
Voltage matters, too. Watt-hours (Wh) account for both charge capacity and voltage, making them more useful than mAh when comparing batteries with different voltages. The conversion is Wh = (mAh × volts) ÷ 1,000.
Why power-bank ratings can look inconsistent
Xiaomi lists its Magnetic Power Bank 5000, model WPB0507, as a 5,000 mAh lithium-ion battery at 3.7 V, or 18.5 Wh. The same product specification lists a rated output capacity of 2,800 mAh at 5 V. These figures describe different voltage and output conditions; they are not competing runtime measurements.

JBL’s support information gives another illustration: the JBL Xtreme’s physical battery is listed as 5,000 mAh at 7.4 V and 37 Wh. JBL explains that the same energy expressed at 3.7 V corresponds to twice the mAh. That is why a capacity figure without its voltage basis can be misleading.
How to estimate runtime
When you know average current
If the battery capacity and average current use the same voltage basis, divide capacity by current:

These examples show the arithmetic, not the expected life of a particular phone, speaker, or power bank. A device’s draw may change substantially as you use it.
When you know power in watts
Convert the battery capacity to Wh, then divide by the average load in watts. At the 3.7 V basis in Xiaomi’s specification, 5,000 mAh is 18.5 Wh. A constant 5 W load would use that energy in 18.5 Wh ÷ 5 W = 3.7 hours in an ideal calculation. This is arithmetic from the listed specification, not a measured test of a product.

For a power bank, the ideal result must be reduced to account for energy lost when converting cell voltage to USB output voltage. The amount of usable energy varies with the battery, converter, output voltage, and use; there is no universal efficiency percentage to apply.
Allow for conversion losses
ADATA illustrates the effect with a worked example: for a 5,000 mAh, 3.7 V power bank, it assumes 85% conversion efficiency and calculates about 3,145 mAh delivered at 5 V. The 85% is ADATA’s assumption for that example, not a general guarantee or a measured efficiency for all power banks.

Why actual battery life varies
Many devices do not draw power at a steady rate. A phone’s screen, processor, radios, and background tasks all affect demand, so the same battery can last different amounts of time under different conditions.

- What you do: Standby, streaming, GPS use, and gaming can place different demands on a device. Higher-demand activity generally drains a battery faster than lighter use.
- Display and processing: Screen brightness and refresh rate, processor load, background activity, and software optimization affect consumption.
- Connectivity: Weak network signal and wireless functions can change power use.
- Temperature and age: Cold can temporarily reduce available capacity. Heat contributes to long-term battery aging, and an older battery may not provide the same usable capacity as when it was new.
- Power-bank conversion: A USB output is not the same voltage as the battery cells in many power banks, and voltage conversion is not lossless. The cell’s advertised mAh therefore should not be read as an equal number of mAh delivered to a 5 V device.
How to compare batteries or estimate your own device
For a useful estimate, find the battery’s voltage or Wh rating and the device’s average power draw under the kind of use you care about. Divide battery Wh by average load watts for an ideal estimate, then treat the result as an upper-bound calculation rather than a guaranteed runtime.

When comparing power banks, check more than the headline mAh number:
- Compare Wh and the voltage basis, where published.
- Check rated output capacity at the stated voltage and the available output power and ports.
- Account for published usable-energy or conversion information, if available.
- Match the power bank’s output to the device and the intended workload.
When comparing phones, capacity alone does not establish which lasts longer. Display, processor, software, and network behavior also matter, and the specifications cited here do not establish a general runtime for all phones with 5,000 mAh batteries.
