Lithium could help make ammonia by cycling through a series of chemical reactions that separate nitrogen activation from the step that adds hydrogen. In a 2017 laboratory demonstration, researchers used electricity to make lithium metal, reacted it with nitrogen to form lithium nitride, and then used water to release ammonia while regenerating lithium hydroxide. The result was a promising research pathway—not proof of a commercially viable or lifecycle-sustainable replacement for conventional ammonia production.
How lithium helps make ammonia
The process uses lithium as a reactive intermediate that changes form and is regenerated. It is not a one-step reaction in which lithium is simply added as a catalyst. The researchers’ sequence was:
- Make lithium metal: Electrolyze lithium hydroxide, using electricity to produce lithium metal.
- Bind nitrogen: Expose the lithium metal to nitrogen gas, forming lithium nitride.
- Release ammonia: React the lithium nitride with water. This produces ammonia and regenerates lithium hydroxide, which can feed the cycle again.
The key idea is to split nitrogen reduction and later protonation into separate stages. In typical aqueous electrochemical approaches, the competing hydrogen evolution reaction can consume charge that might otherwise contribute to ammonia production. The authors said their stepwise approach could circumvent that competition and be predominantly selective for ammonia. The 2017 paper reports nitrogen and water at atmospheric pressure; its description of temperature should be understood in relation to the demonstrated steps, not as evidence that an integrated industrial plant has been optimized. Chemistry World described the nitridation step as occurring at room temperature. That report quoted co-lead researcher Jens K. Nørskov: “The fact that lithium binds nitrogen so strongly simply means that you pull down the barrier for nitrogen dissociation enough that you can do it at room temperature.”
What the 88.5% result means
McEnaney and colleagues reported an initial current efficiency toward ammonia of 88.5% in their 2017 study. Current efficiency describes the share of electrical charge directed toward the target product under the reported experimental conditions. It is not the process’s overall energy efficiency, a commercial production yield, or a measure of greenhouse-gas savings.

The paper also said the work was approaching industrial-level electrolytic current densities. That is a statement about current density, not proof of industrial-scale output, continuous operation, durability, or economic competitiveness.
Why the route drew interest—and what sustainability would require
Because the process uses electricity, it could potentially be paired with renewable power. The authors also identified the possibility of localized ammonia production. Those are prospective advantages: the cited work does not establish that the process has lower costs or lifecycle emissions than existing production.

A fair sustainability assessment would need to account for the full process, including the electricity required to make lithium metal and operate the cycle, the carbon intensity of that electricity, conversion and selectivity, throughput, equipment and materials, process integration, and the lifetime and recovery of the lithium-containing loop. It would also need a consistent comparison with conventional ammonia production and other low-carbon routes. The available sources do not resolve those comparisons.

Chemistry World reported in 2017 that ammonia production is responsible for up to 3% of global CO₂ emissions. That figure is attributed here to the news report; the report passage does not identify the underlying calculation or its original statistical source. Chemistry World’s account of the demonstration should not be taken as a lifecycle analysis of the lithium process.

Why this is not yet an industrial alternative
The original report explicitly noted that scaling the laboratory demonstration to industrially feasible production would be challenging. Industrial use would require more than demonstrating a favorable initial current-efficiency figure: the full cycle would need practical throughput, reliable repeated operation, efficient integration of its stages, and an acceptable cost and emissions profile.
Later work shows continued research, not commercial deployment. A 2024 review places stepwise lithium chemistry among approaches that still need to bridge stepwise and continuous electrolytic methods. A 2021 study of closed-loop electrolyte design is another example of research into the broader challenge; it does not show that the 2017 process has reached the market. The 2024 review and the 2021 study provide that research context.
