Light can switch electrical current through a molecular junction by changing the molecule’s structure or electronic state. In the laboratory, researchers have demonstrated this behavior with individual photosensitive molecules. It is a molecular-scale proof of principle—not a finished consumer switch—and the performance of one molecule cannot be assumed for another.
What “on” and “off” mean in a molecular switch
In this context, “on” and “off” describe how readily electrical charge moves through a molecule placed between electrodes. Illumination changes the molecule, and the changed state can conduct differently. The output being measured is electrical conductance, not brightness.
A June 17, 2016 Chemistry World report described a photosensitive molecule whose conductivity could be turned on and off with light. A related primary study provides a concrete example of the underlying device approach, but it should not be mistaken for confirmation that every detail describes the exact 2016 report.
How a molecule controls current
A molecular junction places a molecule in contact with tiny electrodes. When light changes the molecule’s configuration or electronic state, that can alter the pathways available for charge transport. Researchers can then measure a change in conductance across the junction.

In a diarylethene junction study, researchers used irradiation to switch molecules in contact with gold nanoelectrodes from a nonconductive to a conductive state. They characterized conductance in both states and examined the molecular energy level involved and its broadening. This demonstrates controlled electrical switching in a molecular junction; it does not establish a universal on/off ratio, speed, lifetime, or efficiency for molecular switches generally.
Different molecules use different controls and outputs
“Photoswitch” describes a broad class of systems, not one standardized device. The chemistry, light input, environment, and measured output differ across studies, so results should be kept attached to the particular molecule and setup.

| Example | Control and molecular change | Measured output | What the cited work establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diarylethene molecular junction | Irradiation changes the molecule’s state in a junction with gold nanoelectrodes; the cited summary does not state a specific wavelength. | Electrical conductance | Controlled switching from a nonconductive to a conductive state in that junction study. |
| Azobenzene side groups in a single-molecule transistor | Light and electric field reversibly control trans and cis forms; the field affects their relative stability and isomerization barrier. | Resistance | A single-molecule transistor platform with two control inputs, as reported in 2019. |
| Dronpa fluorescent protein | In the 2005 study, 488 nm illumination drives an individual molecule toward a dim protonated form; 405 nm light can restore the bright form. | Fluorescence | Repeatable switching more than 100 times and response times on the order of milliseconds under that study’s experimental conditions. |
| Green fluorescent protein (GFP) | Individual molecules were observed blinking and entering a long-lasting dark state; 405 nm irradiation could restore emission. | Fluorescence | An individual-molecule observation reported in 1997, with photonic-switching and storage uses proposed by the authors. |
The 2019 azobenzene transistor study is an example of light working alongside an electric field, rather than acting as the only control input. Its resistance switching is distinct from the diarylethene study’s conductance change.

Dronpa and GFP illustrate why the output matters. In those experiments, the measured signal is emitted light: molecules move between brighter and darker fluorescent states. The Dronpa cycle counts and response times belong only to that protein system and its experimental conditions; they are not performance specifications for a conductive molecular switch.

The 1997 GFP work described blinking and a long-lived dark state in individual molecules, and suggested possible uses such as fluorescent markers, molecular photonic switches, or optical storage. Those were proposed applications, not evidence of current products. More broadly, molecular photoswitch research includes changes that affect electron or energy transfer, but this research field does not by itself demonstrate practical-scale deployment (Royal Society of Chemistry review).
What the demonstration does—and does not—show
The result is important because it shows that illumination can alter a measurable electrical property at the scale of a single-molecule device. The cited examples support laboratory phenomena and motivate possible future uses; they do not establish that this switch is commercially available or ready for consumer electronics. The 2016 report mentioned solar-energy harvesting, light sensing, biomedical electronics, and optical logic as potential applications, not products demonstrated in use.

Nor is there a single performance number that can fairly summarize these examples. A separate 2019 study of cyclic group-15 biradical switches reported photoisomerization quantum yields up to 24.6%; that figure belongs to a different chemical system, not the conductive switch discussed here (Royal Society of Chemistry study). Likewise, spiropyrans are an adjacent photoswitch class, with distinct applications and concerns such as UV-related photobleaching in imaging contexts (Royal Society of Chemistry review).

Molecular switches offer researchers a way to explore whether light-responsive molecules can control electrical or optical behavior in very small systems. The studies show multiple routes: a molecule can change conductance in a junction, alter resistance in a transistor, or switch its fluorescence. Turning those demonstrations into robust devices would require engineering and validation beyond the phenomena reported in these papers.
