League of Legends rank boosting can change an account’s rank faster by having a stronger player play Ranked on it, or by carrying its owner through a smurf account. That is account progression on paper, not proof that the owner has improved. Riot classifies boosting and certain carry arrangements as ranked manipulation, and says penalties can include suspensions, rank or reward removal, and permanent bans for repeat offenses.
What a League of Legends rank boost actually does
Riot defines boosting as a more skilled player logging into another player’s account to play Ranked, whether or not the account is later returned. In Riot’s words, “Boosting is a form of rank manipulation where a more skilled player (the booster) logs into another player’s account (the boostee) to play Ranked games, regardless of whether they give the account back to the boostee.” (Riot Games, 2025.)
Riot also describes hitchhiking, sometimes called bussing, as queueing with another player to climb and artificially inflate rank or MMR. Its enforcement FAQ says a booster who duo-queues with a customer on a smurf account to inflate the customer’s MMR can also count as boosting. (Riot’s Account Penalties and Enforcement FAQ.)
Either arrangement can raise the account’s displayed rank by putting stronger play into its Ranked games. The rank belongs to the account, however; it does not show that the account owner can perform at that level or keep the rank through their own play.

How much faster can boosting get you to the next rank?
There is no verified average number of games or days saved. Riot’s sources explain the mechanism and enforcement, but do not establish a typical service speed, success rate, or how often a boosted rank is retained. No substantiated provider offers or performance comparisons are available here, so a specific time or rank guarantee would be unreliable.
The useful distinction is between a faster account-level change and faster personal improvement. A booster or stronger teammate may win games on the account, but that does not teach the account owner the decisions, mechanics, or consistency needed at the new level. The reviewed sources provide no evidence that buying a boost improves the owner’s skill.

Can you get banned for Elo boosting?
Yes. Riot treats account sharing for Ranked boosting and qualifying hitchhiking as ranked manipulation. Riot said penalties began rolling out in waves with Patch 25.18 in 2025. Its FAQ says detection considers MMR and unusual changes, not just the visible rank; Riot has not published a safe rank-gap threshold. (Riot’s enforcement FAQ.)
Riot’s penalty descriptions do not give one universally guaranteed outcome. The 2025 FAQ lists a first offense as a three-day ban, a second as a 14-day ban, and a third as a permanent ban; it also mentions Honor reduction and exclusion from or revocation of that season’s Ranked rewards. Riot Support separately summarizes suspensions in a 14–180-day range and permanent bans for repeat offenders, while its later Vanguard article describes escalating suspensions and rank or reward revocation. Outcomes depend on enforcement and offense circumstances; neither schedule should be treated as a promised result for an individual account.

In its 2026 Vanguard article, Riot said Anti-Boost first launched privately for League of Legends in September 2025. Riot also reported 296,416 accounts actioned for rank manipulation across League of Legends and VALORANT “since late last year”; that figure is combined across the two games, not a League-only count. Credential sharing can put the account at risk
A service that plays Ranked on your account needs access to it. Riot Support warns that players who share login details with a potential booster may find their accounts stolen and sold or traded. That is a risk, not a claim that every service steals accounts. Playing with a higher-ranked friend without a ranked carry
Riot says a higher-ranked friend should not use a smurf account to duo-queue in Ranked and carry a lower-ranked friend. You can still play together in normal Summoner’s Rift queues and other game modes, according to Riot’s enforcement FAQ. That lets friends share games without using a ranked carry arrangement.

Safer ways to work toward a higher rank
- Keep control of your account. Play Ranked yourself rather than handing credentials to someone else.
- Practice at your current level. Reviewing your own games and working on specific weaknesses supports improvement without artificially changing the account’s matchmaking history.
- Use non-Ranked modes with friends across skill levels. Riot identifies normal queues and other game modes as options when a higher-ranked friend wants to play with you.
- Keep alternate accounts honest. Riot says self-created, self-leveled alternate accounts can be legitimate when played honestly and without deranking or other ranked manipulation.
