Lake Most in northwestern Bohemia is an artificial pit lake created by flooding the residual pit of the Most–Ležáky brown-coal mine. Filling began on 24 October 2008, but the lake reached its final operating water level only in September 2014. Its transformation followed the destruction of the former royal town of Most, which was demolished in the 1970s and 1980s to make way for mining.
How did Lake Most form?
Lake Most formed through hydraulic reclamation: after mining ended, water was used to fill the residual pit left by the Most–Ležáky lignite mine. It is therefore a man-made mine-reclamation lake, not a natural lake.
The state mining and reclamation operator DIAMO dates the ceremonial start of filling to 24 October 2008. Filling did not proceed continuously: DIAMO records a pause in 2012 and 2013. The final operating water level was reached in September 2014. The start date marks the beginning of the process, not the lake’s completion.

The resulting landscape was then reshaped through reclamation and revitalization, with the lake becoming its most conspicuous feature. What was there before Lake Most?
The lake occupies the site of the former royal town of Most. The town was demolished in the 1970s and 1980s to enable brown-coal extraction; the mine later left the pit that was flooded to create the lake. This is why the site’s story is not simply one of converting an abandoned mine into a recreational destination: mining transformed a settled landscape, and the lake came after that loss.
Today’s city of Most is distinct from the former town beneath the lake. Radio Prague International’s 2020 report on the lake’s official opening recounts the mining history and the former town. The National Heritage Institute’s journal article on the transformation of the historic town and mining landscape provides further historical context.
How large is Lake Most?
DIAMO reports a flooded area of about 309 hectares, a water volume of 70.5 million cubic metres and a maximum depth of about 71 metres. Its two pages give slightly different area and depth figures, so these are best treated as approximate operator-reported dimensions, not as measurements more precise than the sources support. The operator also gives the shoreline perimeter as 9,380 metres.

Ranking it as the country’s largest or second-largest lake would be misleading without specifying a comparable category and date: published descriptions differ, and the available sources do not resolve the discrepancy.

What uses does the reclaimed landscape have?
Reclamation created more than a water body. DIAMO describes recreational uses alongside routes and habitats in the surrounding landscape.
- Walking and learning: an educational trail about 2.5 kilometres long runs on the southern slopes.
- Cycling: a cycle route passes through the reclaimed area.
- Wildlife habitat: DIAMO describes the surrounding area as a wintering site for waterbirds. Its detail page reports 22 species and nearly 6,000 individuals, but does not establish that figure as a current annual count. It also reports 350 vascular plant species.
VisitCzechia presents Lake Most as a recreational zone with swimming and water sports. Its general destination information is not a live bathing-season test, so it cannot establish current water quality or whether bathing is permitted on a particular date. For present-day bathing status, access rules, facilities or transport, check current local guidance before travelling.

The lake is both an example of post-mining landscape reclamation and a reminder of what preceded it. Its creation turned a mine pit into a large body of water and a landscape with recreational and ecological uses, but the site’s history includes the demolition of the former town of Most to make coal extraction possible. Understanding both stages—urban loss and land reclamation—gives a fuller account of how Lake Most came to be.
