A “lab on skin” is a flexible patch that collects and analyzes sweat, then sends readings wirelessly to an external device such as a smartphone. A 2016 report described a research patch that measured several sweat-related signals during exercise. That is physiological monitoring—not a validated medical health check: the available reports do not establish that the patch can diagnose a condition or replace clinical testing.
How the 2016 lab-on-skin patch worked
The patch used microfluidics—tiny channels that guide liquid through a device—to direct sweat into four chambers. Each chamber contained a different color-changing indicator. The indicators responded to analytes in the sweat, while a phone camera and image-capture software supported colorimetric analysis. The patch could communicate wirelessly with external devices, including smartphones. Chemistry World’s 2016 report describes the system and identifies the underlying study by A. Koh and colleagues, published in Science Translational Medicine (DOI: 10.1126/scitranslmed.aaf2593).
What it measured
The 2016 report lists sweat lactate, chloride, glucose, pH, and the body’s rate of water loss. These are measurements made by the research platform; a color change or phone reading does not by itself establish an athlete’s hydration status, illness, or readiness to compete.

What happened in the reported cycling test
Chemistry World reported that researchers tested the patch during a 104 km cycling race, with patches worn on the arms and backs of 12 riders. The report says the sensors performed despite changes in temperature and humidity, and that participants reported no discomfort or patch detachment. Those observations describe this particular reported field test, not proof of performance across athletes, sports, or environments.

The report does not provide clinical diagnostic-performance measures for the patch. The available account also does not establish a population-level validation or support extrapolating the small field test to all athletes.
A separate 2025 sports sensor measured different signals
A 2025 Talanta paper describes a different integrated sports lab-on-skin sensor. Its abstract reports wireless, on-body measurement of sweat sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), lactate, and initial sweat rate. The researchers studied physically trained and untrained groups exercising at the same intensity and assessed how water intake, breakfast, and exercise intensity influenced dehydration time and sweat measurements. The paper’s abstract is available through PubMed.

This later system should not be confused with the 2016 patch: the reported analytes and study conditions differ. The 2017 ACS Nano review places lab-on-skin within a broader research area covering flexible and stretchable wearable electronics, including sweat analysis and other monitoring applications; it does not establish that the 2016 patch became a consumer or clinical product.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat “health check” means—and what it does not
In this context, “health check” is headline shorthand for collecting physiological information during exercise. Sweat sensing may help researchers monitor bodily signals, but the reports described here do not show that either patch is a validated diagnostic test, has regulatory authorization for diagnosing disease, or can replace a clinician’s assessment or laboratory testing. A sweat measurement should not be treated as a standalone diagnosis or as proof that an athlete is safe to continue exercising.

How to compare the research systems
The meaningful comparison is between what each research device measured and how it was studied—not between retail products. The available sources do not establish that either system is commercially available.
