Vision models can turn borrower-submitted bank statements and other financial documents into structured data and potential underwriting signals. Kita offers this through Capture and Risk Score. That may give lenders another source of evidence for applicants with thin or incomplete credit files, but it does not mean credit bureaus are absent across the markets Kita serves, nor does document extraction by itself prove that a borrower will repay.

Why “when credit bureaus don’t exist” needs qualification

Kita’s materials describe products for lending workflows and identify the Philippines, Mexico, and Indonesia among the markets its API supports. They do not establish that credit bureaus do not exist in those countries—or in the United States, which also appears in the company’s benchmark. The more defensible use case is helping assess applicants whose conventional credit histories are thin, incomplete, or insufficient for a lender’s decision.

A document-derived signal is an additional source of evidence, not a replacement for a bureau file or an automatic credit decision. Kita says lenders retain decision control, and its Risk Score is intended to be used alongside an existing credit assessment.

What a vision model does with a bank statement

A vision-language model (VLM) processes visual material such as a scanned page or screenshot and relates it to language and structured information. In a statement workflow, the important distinction is between reading the document and calculating trustworthy financial features from what was read. A model can identify transaction text, but a lender still needs to know whether the rows are complete, whether money is classified in the right direction, and whether calculated totals match the source.

1. Extract transaction rows

The system reads document content such as dates, descriptions, amounts, and balances, then represents transactions as structured rows. Input quality and layout matter: photographed pages, scans, long statements, and different local formats can all challenge extraction.

2. Validate and reconcile

Extracted rows need checks for missing transactions, duplicate entries, inconsistent balances, and whether credits and debits have the correct direction. A plausible-looking table is not enough if the source contains more rows than the model returned.

3. Calculate financial features

Totals and aggregates—such as total credits, total debits, average balance, and net cash flow—should be calculated from validated rows and checked against the statement. Kita’s benchmark argues that doing this arithmetic in code, rather than asking a language model to infer totals, helps avoid errors that can persist even when individual fields look accurate.

Scanner Bin - The Clever Document Scanning Solution
  • Flatbed scanners simply cannot compete with your smartphone and a Scanner Bin. Improved resolution and color rendering compared to popular flatbed scanners. Compare to 1200 DPI. Takes a fraction of the time to scan at a fraction of the cost. Not to mention that flatbed scanners end up adding a lot of hazardous e-waste to your local landfill.
  • Solve the common issues with smartphone scanning. Provides a contrasting background for consistent edge-detection and auto-cropping. Controls the lighting and provides stability and proper positioning while you scan with your smartphone.
  • Scan photographs, receipts, letters, notes, artwork, fragile documents, etc. Also used as an aid for the blind or visually impaired or as a document camera for remote learning. When you aren't scanning, turn on its side to use as a desk-side bin to toss in the items you want to scan later.
  • This version is the lowest cost option for a scanner solution. It is also simplified for set up and use, and therefore is recommended for those who are blind, visually impaired or have movement disorders.
  • Use with popular FREE APPS for document scanning like Adobe Scan, Scanbot, Evernote Scannable, CamScanner, and Prizmo Go

4. Test whether the features predict repayment

Only after reliable features have been produced can a lender test whether they help predict repayment in its own portfolio. Accurate transcription is a data-quality result; predictive lift is a separate modeling result, and neither guarantees the other.

What Kita Capture and Risk Score offer

Service Role described by Kita Document and output details
Capture Document intake and extraction for lending workflows Kita says it reads borrower documents, including scanned bank statements and e-wallet screenshots, and returns extracted, validated data. Its API documentation lists bank statements, payslips, IDs, and tax filings for the Philippines, Mexico, and Indonesia.
Risk Score Numeric signals derived from borrower-uploaded files, to use alongside an existing credit assessment Kita says bank statements can unlock cash-flow scores and payslips can unlock income scores; a corresponding score may be null when the relevant document is absent. Listed formats are PDF, JPG, PNG, and HEIC. The score set and calibration are customized for each enterprise client.

Kita’s home page also describes related services for document intake, underwriting, and borrower follow-up. These are product descriptions, not independent evidence that the tools improve lending outcomes in every deployment.

What Kita’s June 2026 benchmark measured

Kita says it tested nine systems using 62 de-identified bank and e-wallet statements from the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States, covering roughly 2,200 transactions. The company says financial analysts curated the ground truth and people graded 558 outputs field by field. These sample and process details are reported by Kita; they should not be treated as a representative test of every bank, format, or market.

  • DX1210 Duplex USB Optical Card Scanner for scanning and reading driver licenses. Scans BOTH sides of a driver license or ID card in a single pass.
  • Scan-ID (Full Version) app scans, reads and manages database of card information. Note: Automatically reads DRIVER LICENSES ONLY; for other cards & IDs, data is manually entered.
  • Automatic Age Verification and flagging for minimun age requirements. Reads USA & Canadian driver license data from 2D barcode printed on most state licenses.
  • Direct scanning to PDF, JPEG, TIF formats. Fully TWAIN compatible - works with numerous bank, medical, healthcare, and other imaging apps.
  • Windows only, NOT Mac compatible. Quad-powered rollers - ideal for thick and laminated cards.. Max input card size: 4 in x 9 in; HIgh resolution scans up to 600 dpi in full color.

The benchmark distinguishes field-level extraction from “signal accuracy.” The former concerns reading fields; the latter asks whether derived figures—such as total credits, total debits, average balance, and net cash flow—match the statement’s actual figures.

Measure in Kita’s June 2026 benchmark Reported result What it indicates
Signal accuracy: Kita Max 99.3%, as reported by Kita for its 62-statement, roughly 2,200-transaction benchmark Agreement of derived figures with the statement figures under the benchmark’s definition.
Signal accuracy: standard Kita 97.6%, as reported by Kita for the same benchmark Agreement of derived figures with the statement figures under the benchmark’s definition.
Signal accuracy: listed external systems 67.3%–83.5%, the range reported by Kita for the external systems in that benchmark The reported range is specific to the systems and sample Kita tested; it is not a general ranking of all competing tools.
Field-level extraction across systems 96.9%–98.7%, the range reported by Kita for the systems in that benchmark High field scores did not necessarily translate into equally accurate calculated totals.

The gap matters because errors can compound after extraction. Kita’s benchmark describes partial extraction and incorrect transaction directionality; in one example reported by the company, a system returned 29 rows from a 209-transaction statement. That is an example from Kita’s benchmark, not an independently audited incident. A missed row or a debit treated as a credit can change a cash-flow feature even when many individual fields were read correctly.

What the predictive results do—and do not—show

Kita’s Risk Score page reports a backtest involving 8,000 self-reported uploads from a global microlender and 524 raw signals extracted from financial content and document characteristics. The surfaced page does not state a publication date for these figures.

Kita reports that more than 25 signals were meaningfully predictive. Against a bureau-score baseline, it reports a +2.4 Gini result for all documents, and +7.0 Gini and +0.036 AUC for data-rich documents. These are company-reported backtest results, not a guarantee of improvement for another lender. The page does not provide enough detail to establish independent replication, how representative the sample is, or whether the results would transfer to a different lender’s applicants and repayment outcomes.

For a lender, the practical implication is to request a backtest using its own outcomes and current policy. The relevant question is not just whether a score can be produced, but whether it adds reliable information beyond the signals already used for decisions.

How a lender should evaluate statement-reading AI

A procurement test should cover both document handling and downstream credit use. Test the system against documents from the lender’s actual customer base, then keep extraction quality, arithmetic accuracy, and predictive value as separate evaluation questions.

  • Check row completeness: Compare every returned transaction with the source, especially for long, multi-page statements. Confirm that no pages or rows are silently omitted.
  • Reconcile derived figures: Recalculate credits, debits, balances, and cash flow from the extracted rows. Investigate any mismatch with the statement rather than accepting a score built on unreconciled totals.
  • Test difficult inputs: Include photographed and scanned pages, different layouts, and the local statement formats and languages encountered in the lender’s applicant population.
  • Review fraud and consistency controls: Ask how the workflow flags document manipulation or contradictions between documents. Extraction accuracy alone does not establish that a submitted document is genuine.
  • Validate portfolio lift: Compare model performance against the lender’s existing policy and repayment outcomes, using an appropriate holdout or other validation method. Check results for relevant borrower groups and document availability rather than relying only on an overall figure.
  • Inspect operations and auditability: Evaluate integration and deployment controls, whether extracted values can be traced back to document evidence, and how customer-specific score calibration is managed.

These checks also provide a fair basis for comparing vendors. The available Kita materials report the company’s own benchmark and product capabilities; they do not independently rank the broader market across extraction, reconciliation, local-format coverage, fraud checks, predictive value, integration, auditability, or calibration.

What to take away

Kita’s approach illustrates a useful division of labor: vision models can help turn messy financial documents into structured evidence, while validation and deterministic calculations make that evidence more dependable. Whether the resulting features improve credit decisions remains a separate, portfolio-specific question. Treat Kita’s accuracy and backtest figures as vendor-reported results, and assess any deployment against the lender’s own documents and repayment data.
