Higher iron ore prices can lift Fortescue’s revenue and earnings, but there is no fixed conversion from a benchmark-price move to profit or to Fortescue’s share price. The company’s realized selling price, shipments, product mix, costs, exchange rates and contract timing all shape the result. Investors then revalue the shares based on expectations for future cash flow and distributions—not through a direct accounting formula.
How do iron ore prices affect Fortescue?
Fortescue says its iron ore sales are predominantly exposed to prevailing market prices. Most contracts are provisionally priced, with the final price determined using relevant indices on or after the vessel arrives at discharge. That means the benchmark price is an important input, but it is not necessarily the price Fortescue ultimately realizes for each tonne. Fortescue FY24 Annual Report
A useful simplified model is: realized selling price multiplied by saleable tonnes, adjusted for product mix, freight treatment and contract pricing, contributes to revenue. This is an explanatory model, not an exact company-published equation. After revenue, operating and price-linked costs, foreign exchange and other items influence earnings.
Benchmark price versus realized price
Fortescue’s realized price can differ from an iron ore benchmark because of product characteristics, the realization level achieved against the benchmark and the timing of provisional pricing. In FY25, Fortescue reported a hematite realized price of US$85 per dry metric tonne (dmt), down from US$103/dmt in FY24, and realization of 84% of the Platts 62% CFR Index. For FY26, Fortescue reported a hematite realized price of US$91/dmt and average revenue realization of 88%. Its presentation notes a benchmark specification change from July 2025, so benchmark series on either side of that date should not be compared as if their specifications were unchanged. Revenue, costs and earnings
All else equal, a higher realized price means more revenue per tonne and can improve margins. But “all else equal” matters: shipment volumes, product mix, price-linked costs, operating costs, foreign exchange and other movements can change at the same time. Fortescue identified lower average realized prices as the primary reason for lower FY25 revenue and underlying EBITDA, while also reporting offsets and other effects, including price-linked costs, cost movements and foreign exchange. Fortescue FY25 Annual Report
FY26 company figures show how price sits alongside other operating drivers: Fortescue reported 201.3 million tonnes (Mt) of iron ore shipments, US$17.0 billion in revenue, US$8.6 billion in underlying EBITDA and US$3.5 billion in underlying net profit after tax (NPAT). Its hematite C1 cost was US$18.74 per wet metric tonne (wmt). The realized price is quoted per dry tonne, while C1 cost is per wet tonne; they are different measures and should not be directly subtracted without appropriate unit conversion and consistent segment scope. Does a higher iron ore price mean higher Fortescue profits?
Not automatically. If shipments, mix, costs, exchange rates and other factors were unchanged, a higher realized price would generally increase revenue and margins. In practice, those inputs can move together or offset one another. A higher benchmark may not translate one-for-one into Fortescue’s realized price, and a gain in revenue can be partly absorbed by costs or weaker volumes.
For a meaningful comparison between price scenarios, state what happens to each of these inputs:
- Realized price: benchmark used, product-specific realization and contract timing.
- Volume and mix: shipment tonnes, hematite versus magnetite mix and operational disruptions.
- Costs: C1 costs, price-linked costs, fuel, freight and unit-cost changes.
- Currency: the AUD/USD assumption and any translation effects.
- Period and valuation: fiscal-year horizon, expected versus realized outcomes, cash flow and distributions.
Provisional pricing can affect timing
Because many sales are provisionally priced, the price recorded before final settlement may change as indices are applied around discharge. Fortescue’s FY24 Annual Report said 4.6 Mt remained provisionally priced at 30 June 2024. For those outstanding sales only, the company estimated that a 2% movement in realized price would affect profit by US$6 million before tax, assuming other factors—including foreign exchange—were held constant. This is a dated sensitivity for that provisional-sales balance, not a whole-company or full-year earnings sensitivity. Fortescue FY24 Annual Report
Currency also matters
Fortescue reports its results in US dollars, while its shares trade in Australian dollars. AUD/USD movements can therefore affect translated earnings and investor expectations. Fortescue’s FY27 operating guidance was based on an assumed AUD:USD exchange rate of 0.70; that is an input to the guidance, not a forecast of the exchange rate that will actually prevail. Why does Fortescue’s share price move when iron ore prices change?
The share-price effect runs through investor expectations. A change in expected iron ore prices can alter forecasts for Fortescue’s realized prices and margins. Investors may then revise estimates for earnings, free cash flow, distributions and the risk attached to those forecasts, affecting the value they are willing to pay for the shares.

Each link is conditional. The share price can also respond to production and cost news, currency, capital allocation, the performance of Fortescue’s energy business, interest rates, risk appetite and market-wide movements. The company disclosures cited here do not establish a numeric sensitivity between an iron ore price move and Fortescue’s share price, so a claim such as “a US$10 rise adds a set amount to the share price” would require a separate, dated and clearly attributed valuation model.

How to assess a price-driven earnings claim
When a company update or market commentary links Fortescue’s outlook to iron ore, check whether it distinguishes benchmark prices from Fortescue’s realized price, identifies the relevant reporting period and states its assumptions for shipments, costs and currency. A price-only calculation is useful as a scenario, but it is not a complete earnings forecast unless those other inputs are made explicit.
