Industrial robots can move people away from hazardous furnace and foundry work, but automation does not make the process safe by itself. A safe installation starts with assessing the whole application: robot motion and access, heat and hot surfaces, sparks and molten-metal splash, the handled material, and the work people may need to do during setup, maintenance, fault recovery, or cleaning. Guards protect people from hazards; heat-resistant covers protect compatible robot equipment. Neither replaces controls for molten metal or appropriate worker protection.

What has to be made safe?

The robot arm is only one part of a foundry cell. A risk assessment should consider the robot, its task and movement, the surrounding process equipment, the material it handles, and how people can be exposed in normal and abnormal work. OSHA’s Technical Manual identifies environmental hazards that may matter in a robot application, including heat, hot surfaces, dust, overhead hazards, radiation, sparks, and noise.

Assess exposure during more than automatic production. People may approach or enter the work area to load or inspect equipment, set up or program the robot, clear a fault, perform maintenance, or recover after an interruption. The required safeguards depend on the actual layout, task, access patterns, and hazards; there is no single foundry-cell arrangement established by the sources cited here.

Separate robot motion from process hazards

A person can be exposed to moving machinery, hot equipment, or both. Those hazards need to be considered together, but they are not interchangeable: stopping robot motion does not by itself control hot material, radiant heat, or splash. Likewise, controlling molten-metal exposure does not prevent access to a moving robot. The installation’s assessment must address each relevant exposure and how hazards interact.

What standards cover—and what they do not

The 2025 editions of ISO 10218 address different layers of industrial robot safety. ISO 10218-1:2025 covers industrial robots as partly completed machinery; ISO 10218-2:2025 covers robot applications and cells, including integration. Both official ISO scope descriptions exclude hazards related to handling dangerous loads, explicitly including molten metals. They are therefore not a complete specification for molten-metal process safety. The robot and integrated cell need to be considered alongside additional assessment and controls for the actual foundry process.

In the United States, OSHA’s robotics standards page says there are currently no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry. It identifies consensus standards as guidance from their originating organizations, not as OSHA regulations. This is U.S.-specific context; legal requirements differ by jurisdiction and installation.

How people are kept away from robot hazards

Safeguarding should follow the application risk assessment rather than a parts list. OSHA’s robotics guidance discusses assessing hazards, exposure, risk, and protective measures. Physical barriers and interlocked gates are one example: an older 1987 OSHA robotics directive describes an arrangement in which opening an interlocked gate stops automatic operation and restart is controlled from outside the barrier. That historical guidance is not a current technical standard, and the example is not a universal design prescription.

  • Versatility: Polystyrene signs are highly versatile and can be used for various applications, including indoor and outdoor signage. They are suitable for both temporary and long-term displays, making them a flexible choice for different marketing and informational needs.
  • Cost-Effective: Polystyrene is an affordable material, making it a cost-effective option for creating signs. This makes it particularly attractive for businesses or organizations with budget constraints, allowing them to achieve effective signage without breaking the bank.
  • Lightweight: Polystyrene signs are lightweight, which makes them easy to handle and install. This characteristic is especially advantageous for temporary displays or situations where the sign needs to be mounted or moved frequently.
  • PERFECT SIZE - We have carefully designed this sign, considering every aspect. This unique size gives the ability for the wording to stand out and be easily understood without creating an aggressive environment!
  • Weather Resistance: Polystyrene signs can be designed to withstand various weather conditions. When properly treated or coated, they become resistant to UV rays, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. This weather resistance makes them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, ensuring longevity and durability in different environments.

Whether barriers, interlocks, or other safeguards are appropriate depends on cell geometry, access frequency, the process equipment, operating conditions, and the assessment. People also need a safe way to perform setup, programming, maintenance, and fault-clearing work; considering only normal automatic operation leaves important exposures unaddressed.

Safeguard roles at a glance

Measure Primary role What it does not establish
Risk assessment and application safeguarding Identify exposures to robot and process hazards, then determine suitable protective measures for the installation. A cover for robot equipment is not a substitute for safeguards protecting people.
Barrier and interlocked-gate arrangements Restrict access to a robot work area; the older OSHA directive describes stopping automatic operation when an interlocked gate opens. This example does not establish that one barrier arrangement is sufficient for every cell or every task.
Process-specific controls and worker protection Address actual hot-material, heat, and splash exposures in the foundry process. ISO 10218’s stated scope does not provide a complete molten-metal handling safety design.
Robot heat or splash cover Help protect compatible robot hardware from specified environmental exposure. It is not a personnel safeguard and does not establish that the cell is safe for workers.

How robot covers help near furnaces

Heat-resistant covers are an equipment-protection option for some foundry and casting applications. For example, Yaskawa’s Europe ecosystem listing describes the EVOTEC EVO_heat cover as helping protect specified compatible Yaskawa robot models from radiant heat, sparks, and hot-metal splash. That is a region-specific product listing, not evidence that a cover is suitable for every robot or foundry installation. Compatibility and suitability need to be checked for the exact model and exposure.

A separate manufacturer describes custom high-temperature covers for foundries, welding cells, and die-casting applications. The availability of custom products underscores that fit and exposure conditions matter; manufacturer claims are not independent test results. Obtain technical specifications for the actual application rather than inferring a performance rating from a product name.

What to check before selecting a cover

  • Robot and configuration: Confirm the exact make and model, plus the tooling, cables, and dress packs that affect fit.
  • Exposure: Identify whether the cover must address radiant heat, direct splash, sparks, dust, or chemicals and coolants.
  • Movement and service: Check that the cover accommodates the robot’s full motion path and allows inspection, maintenance, and replacement.
  • Evidence and limits: Ask the supplier for specifications relevant to the actual exposure and installation. Do not infer a rating from the product name alone.
  • People’s safety: Assess guarding and other worker protections independently of the cover.

What a project team should verify

Before a cell is put into service, the responsible team should confirm that its assessment reflects the real task and work practices—not just the robot’s catalog specifications. This includes production, access for setup and service, and recovery from faults. The team should also verify which current national and local requirements apply, the current editions of relevant standards, and supplier specifications for the selected equipment.

The cited standards and guidance establish a framework for thinking about robot applications and their hazards; they do not supply a universal foundry-cell design recipe. In particular, molten-metal handling hazards require additional analysis for the actual installation, while a robot cover’s suitability depends on its model and exposure.
