IMAX Dome theaters use a curved, tilted screen that extends around more of the audience’s field of view. The result is typically a more enveloping, panoramic presentation than the forward-facing view in a flat-screen IMAX auditorium. “Dome” describes the screen and auditorium configuration; it does not, by itself, tell you whether a showing is 3D, what projection system the venue uses, or which films it currently plays.
What makes an IMAX Dome different?
The main difference is screen geometry. IMAX’s 1997 annual report describes Dome theaters as having heavily curved, tilted screens, in contrast with the flatter screens used in other IMAX theaters. IMAX introduced its flat-screen theaters in 1970 and its Dome format—then called OMNIMAX—in 1973, according to that historical filing: IMAX Corporation’s 1997 annual report.
Because the Dome screen wraps farther around the audience, it can occupy more of a viewer’s field of view and make the image feel panoramic or surrounding. A flat-screen IMAX presentation is more conventionally forward-facing. The exact impression depends on the theater, seat, and film; the format name alone does not establish a particular viewing angle or screen size.
IMAX Dome vs. flat-screen IMAX
| Feature | IMAX Dome | Flat-screen IMAX |
|---|---|---|
| Screen shape | Curved, tilted screen surrounding more of the audience | Broad, mostly flat screen |
| Likely visual impression | More enveloping or panoramic | More forward-facing giant-screen view |
| 2D and 3D | The 1997 annual report describes Dome screen components as 2D-only; that historical statement does not establish the capabilities of every current venue. | The 1997 annual report says flat systems could present 2D and 3D. |
| Projection and sound | Not established by the Dome label alone | Not established by the flat-screen label alone |
| Films and showtimes | Depend on the venue and its current schedule | Depend on the venue and its current schedule |
Does IMAX Dome mean the movie is 3D?
No. Dome refers to the screen configuration, not a promise of 3D. IMAX’s 1997 annual report says Dome screen components were 2D-only, while flat-screen systems could show both 2D and 3D. Since that is a historical description, it should not be treated as a current equipment specification for every theater. Check the specific venue’s listing for the format of a particular showing.

Does a Dome theater have different projection or sound?
The format label alone does not identify the projector, sound equipment, or generation of technology installed at a theater. IMAX’s current IMAX Experience page describes customized theater geometry and says IMAX theaters are calibrated daily for sound and images. Those are company-wide statements, not a universal Dome-versus-flat technical comparison or a guarantee about a particular venue’s equipment.
Which movies play in IMAX Dome theaters?
Programming varies by film and location. For example, IMAX’s 2021 Dune release announcement included Dome theaters among participating locations and directed moviegoers to confirm showtimes locally. That dated example shows that a feature film can be offered in Dome venues; it does not mean the film, or any other title, is available at every Dome theater. Check the theater’s current listing for the movie, showtime, and presentation format.
