Keyword rules sort job posts by substring, and substrings mislead. A JavaScript role gets filed as Java, a security job picks up an AI tag because the posting lists AI as a nice-to-have, and a Unity client role ends up on a backend board. The approach described by Angel Nikolov, who says his team runs remotefrontendjobs.com, remotebackendjobs.com and remotejavajobs.com, keeps the keyword rules in place and adds TypeSafe AI’s Jev as a structured judge for contextual questions. Jev is allowed to change a record only when its answer clears a field-specific confidence threshold. Everything below is the author’s account unless a source is named, and none of the deployment figures have been independently audited.

Why keyword matching misclassifies job posts

A keyword rule answers a narrow question: does this string appear in this text? That is cheap and easy to inspect, but a job post rarely means what its strings suggest. The author’s examples fall into three groups:

  • Substring collisions. “Java” appears inside “JavaScript”, so a frontend role can be tagged as Java.
  • Incidental mentions. “AI” appears as a preferred skill or in a company blurb, and the posting is tagged as an AI job even though the role is security work.
  • Context outside the matched phrase. Remote-work details sit in the description rather than the headline, and a rule that checks a single field misses them. Benefits text near the end of a long posting is missed for the same reason.

The failure is not that the rules are wrong on average. It is that a board’s reputation depends on the individual listings a candidate sees, and a handful of confident mistakes on the wrong board is enough to erode trust.

What Jev is and what it returns

According to TypeSafe AI’s Jev 1.13 documentation, Jev evaluates typed questions against a state you supply and returns structured results that software can act on. It is not a chatbot that writes prose. Its three primitives are listed below.

Primitive What it does What it returns How the author used it
Choice Selects one answer from a list of options you provide The selected option with confidence information Seniority and work model
Score Rates the state against an ordered rubric A rubric score with confidence information Not reported in the author’s account
Noul Estimates whether a yes/no statement is true A probability Binary tags (frontend, backend, Java, AI), region, and benefits checks

The vendor’s guidance is to keep each question narrow, send several questions against the same state, and combine the independent results in application code rather than asking one question to do everything.

How the author wired Jev into ingestion

The author sent each posting to Jev as a truncated title, the company name, the location, the full description, and a separately isolated benefits section. Several judgments were carried in one call against that same state. Salary extraction stayed with regular expressions by design, because exact money parsing is a deterministic task that code handles more reliably than a model.

The split matters. Jev handles the questions that depend on meaning. Code handles the questions that have a single right answer: numbers, dates, currency, and exact extraction.

Rolling it out: shadow mode first, then enforcement

The author did not switch the live classifier over in one step. The rollout had two stages.

Shadow mode

In shadow mode, Jev’s answers were sampled and logged next to the keyword decision. The live classification did not change. The author’s sample for this stage was 25 posts. The purpose was to see where the model and the rules disagreed before the model had any authority over the data.

Enforce mode with field-specific gates

In enforce mode, only answers above a confidence threshold set for that specific field could update a record. Uncertain cases stayed with the keyword rules. Two field-level decisions stand out:

  • Work model required a stricter bar. A borderline answer once changed a correct hybrid label to onsite, so overwrites of the work-model field needed a higher threshold than other fields.
  • Seniority was a fallback. Seniority predictions were used only when the keyword rules produced no result.

Failure handling the author describes

The fail-safe sequence in the author’s pipeline is an ordered procedure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. If there is no model token or configuration, skip the model entirely and keep the rule result.
  2. If a call fails with a transient error, retry once.
  3. If the retry also fails, skip the model for that posting and keep the rule result.
  4. Cap concurrency so a slow model endpoint cannot stall ingestion.
  5. Run the model only after deduplication, so duplicate postings do not multiply calls or disagreements.
  6. Retain every raw model output so a decision can be reconstructed later.

Fallback to rules is the default state, not an exception path. A posting the model cannot judge is classified exactly as it was before.

The audit command is the part worth copying

The author’s central principle is that a classifier should have a repeatable audit command that anyone on the team can run. For each classification, the record keeps the raw model decision, the model version, the output of the original keyword rule, and whether the model’s answer was applied or only recorded.

Logs capture the board, the title, latency, token counts, errors, and the applied-or-recorded status. The author reports reviewing batches of recent postings, including an audit of 100 recent rows, and fixing root causes when an audit found a miss. A miss might be fixed in a keyword rule or in a confidence gate, depending on where the error originated. The audit is what turns the model from a black box into something a team can debug.

What the author says changed

According to the author, the pipeline produced fewer false job-board tags and more complete benefits extraction after Jev began interpreting context rather than matching substrings. The examples given are the ones described above: “AI” mentioned only as a preferred skill, remote-work details buried in a description, and benefit text near the end of a long posting. These are the author’s own observations from their boards. They were not measured against a published test set, and the post does not report precision or recall figures for the deployment.

What the vendor says Jev gets wrong

TypeSafe AI’s Jev 1.13 documentation, last reviewed 2 October 2026, lists the model’s known weaknesses. It can be overly literal. It is weak at numeric precision and at date comparisons and counting. It is less reliable when the answer requires indirection or when the state contains large amounts of irrelevant context. It is susceptible to adversarial input, it can be confused by contradictory instructions or criteria, and the order of listed options can change its answer.

The documented remedies are practical:

  • Write precise prompts and criteria, and remove contradictions between them.
  • Move arithmetic and counting into code.
  • Filter irrelevant material out of the state before sending it.
  • Test adversarial cases deliberately.
  • Reorder the choices and check whether the result changes. If it does, the question is not stable enough to automate.

The vendor’s own summary is short: “Jev is not a calculator.”

Independent evidence, and its limits

A separate academic evaluation by Tobias Deußer, Lorenz Sparrenberg, and Rafet Sifa, dated 29 September 2026, tested Jev version 1.13.0 across 37 datasets and 346,009 requests. The authors report strong results on several common classification and reasoning tasks. Performance dropped on low-resource languages, on fine-grained or noisy labels, on legal judgments, and on rubric-based evaluations.

Those results have three limits that matter for a job board. They describe one pinned model version. They use one prompt template per dataset. And they do not evaluate job-board classification at all. The paper supports the view that Jev is useful for some structured judgments and unreliable for others. It does not support an expected accuracy figure for your postings.

A second implementation: a confidence-gated job platform

IrishTalents, an Irish job platform, published a separate case study in 2026 describing a similar pattern. Its results are specific to its own platform and labeled sample:

  • On 178 hand-labeled sponsorship adverts, rules alone reached 89.6% accuracy. A gated Jev-plus-rules workflow reached 99.4%.
  • For top-five job suggestions judged realistic, the share rose from 24% to 72% and then to about 83%. The case study attributes the first jump to retrieval improvements and the later increase to Jev judging candidate-job pairs.

The platform’s workflow follows the same logic as the author’s: rules narrow the list of possible labels, Jev chooses among those options plus “none”, and only answers that pass validation and a confidence gate are accepted. On timeout or a malformed response, the system falls back to rules. The numbers are the platform’s own and should not be transferred to another board without a comparable labeled sample.

Choosing this pattern for your own board

If you are considering the same design, judge it on the axes that determine whether it helps your postings:

  • Label quality on your actual mix. Build a hand-labeled sample of your own postings, including the confusing cases (JavaScript versus Java, incidental AI mentions, remote versus hybrid), and measure both the rules and the gated workflow against it.
  • Confidence handling. Set a separate threshold for each field and make the high-stakes fields, such as work model, harder to overwrite.
  • Fallback behavior. Decide in advance what happens on a missing configuration, a transient error, a timeout, and a malformed answer. The default should be the rule result.
  • Auditability. Store the raw output, the model version, and the original rule decision for every record, and make the comparison a single command.
  • Latency and cost at your volume. Run the model after deduplication and cap concurrency before you measure either.
  • Deterministic work stays in code. Salaries, dates, counts, and currency should be parsed by code, not by a model.

Keyword rules remain cheap and inspectable, but they are brittle around context and substring collisions. A typed model can help with contextual judgments, and the evidence here supports using it that way, with gates and an audit trail. The evidence does not show that Jev is categorically better than rules for job-board classification, and it should not be adopted on that assumption.
