Replacing a repeated battery-state check with event handling means using a notification to decide when to read state—not assuming every battery percentage update will generate an event. Linux exposes power-supply information through kernel interfaces, while UPower offers a higher-level system-bus API. Which notifications are available depends on the driver, device, and software stack, so verify the behavior on the laptop you intend to support.
What changes when a power manager stops polling?
A polling loop periodically reads a value such as a battery’s capacity, whether or not that value has changed. An event-driven design waits for a notification, then reads the current value when notified. This avoids treating a notification as the state itself: events are triggers, while the property read afterward is the current state.
The Linux Kernel Documentation describes power-supply attributes exposed through sysfs and uevent interfaces. Not every device or driver supplies every attribute, and the documented interfaces do not guarantee that every change to every property will produce a notification on every laptop. The title describes the design goal, not a documented implementation: no specific code change, polling interval, laptop, distribution, kernel version, event trace, or measurement is established here.
Which event source can a power manager use?
Kernel power-supply events and udev
The kernel power-supply class represents batteries and other power supplies, with attributes available through sysfs and uevent interfaces. A program can use an event as a cue and then read the relevant sysfs attribute to obtain the current value. Attribute availability and notification behavior depend on the hardware and driver. udev receives kernel uevents when devices are added or removed, and its rules can match device properties associated with an event. That makes udev useful for device-event handling; it does not establish that every battery-percentage update will result in a udev event. The udev manual documents its event and rule model.
UPower over the system message bus
UPower provides a higher-level API on the system message bus. Its device interface includes properties such as Percentage and State; the upower --monitor command reports when a power source is added, removed, or changed. Applications that already use UPower can consume its device information and notifications rather than handling lower-level device events directly. The API’s existence does not establish that a particular desktop environment or custom power manager is already using it.

UPower defines Percentage on a 0–100 scale, but documents that it may be approximate when the hardware reports only coarse battery levels. State describes the battery’s power state, including charging and discharging. Consult the UPower API reference, its device properties, and the upower command reference. The live API reference identifies UPower version 1.91.2; the behavior available on a given system can depend on its installed version and devices.
How should you choose between kernel events and UPower?

Neither interface is a universal winner, and the documentation does not provide comparative performance measurements. Choose based on the property you need to track, whether a service dependency is acceptable, and observed event behavior on supported machines.

How can you verify notifications on your laptop?
- Identify the device and property. Find the relevant power-supply device and the attribute your manager reads, such as battery capacity. Confirm that the attribute exists on the target system; driver and hardware support can vary.
- Observe the event source you plan to use. For kernel or udev handling, inspect device events while connecting or disconnecting AC power and while battery state changes. For UPower, run
upower --monitorand observe its reported source changes. - Read state after notification. When an event arrives, query the current attribute or UPower property. Do not infer an exact percentage or charging state solely from the fact that an event occurred.
- Check the specific change that matters. Plugging or unplugging power may produce an event even when a percentage update does not. Test percentage changes separately if the manager depends on them, and record what the target driver actually emits.
- Measure before claiming a benefit. Claims about wakeups, CPU use, responsiveness, or battery life require a defined measurement method and results for the tested hardware and software versions. Removing a polling loop alone does not establish a battery-life improvement.
Does this change kernel runtime power management?
No. Replacing a userspace polling loop changes how that program checks for state changes; it does not by itself alter the kernel’s runtime power-management policy or system-wide suspend behavior. The kernel’s device-power documentation describes controls such as a device’s power/control setting separately from system sleep handling. See Device Power Management Basics.
What is established—and what is not?
The documented interfaces provide ways to observe power-supply information and, with UPower, receive higher-level source-change notifications. They do not establish that a particular laptop emits a notification for every battery-percentage change, that a specific program has removed polling, or that doing so improved battery life. Those claims require details and measurements from the actual implementation and target system.
