Lions and spotted hyenas compete most clearly at food: they eat some of the same prey and may contest fresh kills or carcasses. Either species can take food from the other, but the outcome depends on who has it first, the animals present and the setting. They share landscapes, too, but a carcass dispute is not by itself evidence of a territorial fight.

How do lions and spotted hyenas compete for food?

They compete both indirectly, by eating overlapping prey, and directly, when they meet at a kill. Taking food caught or secured by another animal is called kleptoparasitism. Spotted hyenas are hunters as well as scavengers, so the relationship is not simply lions hunting and hyenas stealing leftovers.

The balance differs among populations. In Etosha National Park, Namibia, a 2005 study reported that spotted hyenas could not take lion kills or prevent lions from taking hyena kills. The authors discussed the hyenas’ smaller numbers at kills, their large territories and adult male lions as possible explanations; these findings describe that study setting, not a universal rule. A long-term Kenyan study followed interactions across seven hyena clans at two sites over 27 years. Encounters occurred most often at fresh kills, especially when prey was larger and more hyenas were present. The species holding food when an interaction began was more likely to retain it. As the researchers put it, “Possession of food at the beginning of an interaction positively affected retention of that food by each predator species.” Adult male lions made interactions more likely and reduced the likelihood that hyenas would acquire or retain food. What shapes the outcome of a food contest?

  • Initial control: The animal or group already holding the food has an advantage in retaining it.
  • Numbers and group composition: More hyenas can affect the contest, while adult male lions can make it harder for hyenas to gain or keep food.
  • The food itself: Fresh kills were a frequent setting in the Kenyan observations, and interactions were especially common around larger prey.
  • Local conditions: Findings from Etosha and Kenya differ in setting and observation context; neither establishes a fixed winner everywhere.

Do hyenas steal food from lions?

They can, although success is not guaranteed. In Kenya, researchers found that the likelihood of hyenas acquiring food from lions rose with the number of mobbing events during an interaction. The result describes an association in that study, not proof that a group of hyenas routinely overpowers lions.

How mobbing works

In the 2017 study, a mob was defined as two or more hyenas approaching within 10 metres of a lion in a coordinated formation. By approaching together and applying pressure, hyenas may improve their chance of gaining food. The same study found that starting possession and the presence of adult male lions also mattered, so mobbing is one factor in a contest rather than a reliable recipe for taking a kill.

Trinkel and Kastberger also described hyenas mobbing lions near communal dens in Etosha, including when no food was immediately available. They proposed that the behavior might distract lions from cubs or warn young hyenas to hide; those are interpretations offered by the authors, not established motives. Etosha study record

Do lions and hyenas eat the same prey?

They have overlapping diets, creating competition even when the predators do not meet at a carcass. A 2026 study in the Greater Etosha Landscape used DNA metabarcoding on 98 scat samples—69 from lions and 29 from spotted hyenas—and identified 19 vertebrate prey species. Large ungulates dominated both diets. Dietary niche breadth was not significantly different between the two species in this sample; their diet composition was similar, though their most frequent prey items were not identical. These results are specific to the sampled landscape and scat, not a continent-wide census. 2026 Greater Etosha Landscape study

Do lions and hyenas fight over territory?

They occupy overlapping landscapes, and encounters can occur within or near hyena clan territories. But evidence of shared space or a food contest does not establish that the species are fighting to defend exclusive territories. The studies considered here document competition at food more directly than a general pattern of interspecific territorial battles.

A movement study examined fine-scale space use and possible avoidance competition between coursing hyenas and stalking lions in two ecosystems, making spatial interaction a legitimate subject of study without showing that territorial defense is the main form of competition. 2023 movement study A broader review likewise emphasizes variation among studies in large-carnivore competition and coexistence rather than one universal outcome.
