The bees’ responses revealed decision patterns that the researchers reproduced in a proposed computational model. That model could inform autonomous systems, but the study did not build or test a bee-inspired robot.
What the honeybees had to decide
For a foraging bee, a flower-like cue is evidence about whether a visit is likely to pay off. The researchers tested how bees responded to stimuli that varied in evidence quality, while also varying the likelihood of reward and punishment. The controlled flight-arena experiment treated acceptance and rejection as distinct decisions, rather than counting only successful approaches.
The study’s sample was 20 bees, as reported by MaBouDi and colleagues in their 2023 eLife article, “How honey bees make fast and accurate decisions.” That number describes this experiment; it is not an estimate of honeybee behavior across populations or settings.
| Decision response | Reported pattern in the study |
|---|---|
| Accept | Acceptance responses were more accurate and more sensitive to evidence quality and reward likelihood than rejection responses. |
| Reject | Rejection was measured as a response in its own right; it was less accurate and less sensitive to the experimental evidence and reward likelihood than acceptance. |
What the results say about speed and accuracy
Among acceptance responses, fast acceptances were more likely to be correct than slower acceptances. The authors relate this pattern to dynamically changing evidence thresholds: a decision may be made once accumulated evidence is sufficient, and the amount needed can vary as the decision unfolds. They note a similar phenomenon in primates.

- The animal's coats are meticulously hand-cut and trimmed, never stamped out by machine
- Cute Bee plush doll
- size:17cm
This is a finding about the bees and conditions in this experiment. It does not establish that bees are generally faster or more accurate than artificial-intelligence systems, nor does it show that every rapid choice is correct.
From observed behavior to a proposed model
The researchers developed a computational model intended to reproduce key patterns in the bees’ choices. They proposed parallel decision pathways and related the model’s circuitry to known insect-brain pathways, describing the mechanism as neurobiologically plausible.

- Grab & Go Fun: Designed for busy families! The hive stores all bees inside and comes with a handy carry handle. Toss it in your diaper bag for instant entertainment anywhere, anytime
That is a proposed explanation of how the observed behavior might arise, not a direct recording of a bee brain implementing the model. A model can capture selected decision patterns without matching the brain’s full structure, scale or biological operation.
What “closer to the hive” means for AI and robotics
The possible engineering value is the decision-making principle: an autonomous system might benefit from adapting how much evidence it requires before acting, especially when signals vary in reliability and outcomes carry different risks. The paper offers a framework that could inform robust autonomous decision-making; it does not report a deployed robot using the model.

Three evidentiary levels should remain separate:
- Observed behavior: bees in a controlled arena accepted or rejected stimuli under changed evidence and reward conditions.
- Computational account: the authors proposed a model designed to reproduce key patterns and linked its proposed pathways to insect circuitry.
- Robotics application: a possible future use, not an outcome demonstrated by the study.
Coauthor HaDi MaBouDi cautioned that implementing such a model on hardware comparable in size to a bee brain is highly unlikely given the scale difference between biological brains and computational models. The research is therefore better understood as a source of ideas for decision systems than as a blueprint for building a tiny artificial bee brain.
