David XL Green was a commercial draught-beer cooling and serving system that HEINEKEN said used 50% less energy than conventional draught systems. The claim appeared in a company release on 26 March 2014, after the system had launched in summer 2012. Its design paired chilled kegs beneath the bar with disposable beer lines; the available evidence documents a historical product, not a system confirmed to be sold or supported today.
How David XL Green worked
HEINEKEN described David XL Green as the double-tap version of its single-tap David Green system. The kegs were stored and chilled in a refrigerator directly below the counter, reducing the distance beer traveled to the tap. This was equipment for hospitality businesses, rather than a home beer tap.
Each 20-litre keg was refillable stainless steel, while each refill used a new disposable beer line. HEINEKEN presented the fresh line as a way to avoid possible contamination in conventional installations that had not been cleaned properly. The company said the system’s configuration and green fridge helped give David kegs a 30-day shelf life. Those freshness and hygiene points are product claims in HEINEKEN’s 2014 release, not independent findings. (HEINEKEN release, 26 March 2014)

In its March 2014 release, HEINEKEN said David XL Green and its green fridge consumed 50% less energy than conventional draught systems. The release does not identify the systems used as comparators, operating conditions, test protocol, or calculation method. The figure should therefore be read as HEINEKEN’s reported comparison, not as an independently verified result or a universal saving for every venue.
#1 Best Overall
- PREMIUM DESIGN: Authentic Heineken beer tap handle featuring the iconic green color scheme and red star logo, perfect for home bars and draft systems
- DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Professional-grade tap handle made with high-quality materials, designed for long-lasting commercial and residential use
- CLASSIC DIMENSIONS: Standard-sized tap handle measuring approximately 8 inches in length, ensuring compatibility with most draft beer systems
- EASY INSTALLATION: Universal threading system allows for quick attachment to standard beer tap faucets and draft towers
- AUTHENTIC BRANDING: Features the distinctive Heineken logo and established date of 1873, adding genuine character to your draft beer setup
The same release promoted low maintenance, no beer losses, no cleaning costs, and annual savings of around €1,000–€1,200. These are also company-reported claims; actual savings would depend on local beer prices and a venue’s sales volume. The release does not provide a calculation that would establish those amounts for a particular operator.
HEINEKEN’s 2013 sustainability report lists David (XL) Green among its greener draught-equipment developments, alongside SmartDispense. That establishes the system’s place in the company’s sustainability work at the time, but does not quantify an independently assessed environmental impact. (HEINEKEN Sustainability Report 2013)
Rank #2
- Home beer-tap system for use with a 5L Heineken DraughtKeg
- Silent cooling system keeps 5L keg at ideal serving temperature of 38 degrees F
- LED display with volume and temperature indicators
- Maintains freshness for up to 30 days; easy-to-clean detachable parts
- Measures 18 by 19-1/2 by 12 inches
Where HEINEKEN reported deploying the system
Rollout totals changed across the dated company reports. HEINEKEN’s 26 March 2014 release said more than 2,500 systems had been supplied to 25 markets since launch in summer 2012. Its global sustainability report for 2014, published in 2015, later listed David (XL) Green in 28 HEINEKEN markets. These figures refer to different reporting dates and should not be combined into a single contemporaneous count. (March 2014 release; 2014 global sustainability report)

A separate 2014 sustainability report from Alken-Maes, HEINEKEN’s Belgian subsidiary, says green draught equipment had become standard for hospitality businesses consuming under 70 hectolitres of beer annually in that report’s context. This is a country- and report-specific threshold, not a general rule for every HEINEKEN market. (Alken-Maes Sustainability Report 2014)
Rank #3
- Beer Couplers connect to Kegs and allow CO2 in one side and beer to dispense out the other
- S-system Sankey Keg Couplers are designed for most (but not all) European Kegs including Becks, Amstel, Newcastle, Heineken, St. Pauli Girl, and more. They are very similar but NOT the same as D-system couplers.
- The probe is made of 304 Stainless Steel for superior durability and corrosion resistance and since the probe is what actually makes contact with the beer, it is 100% SS beer contact
- The barbed tailpiece / probe which is 5/16” for the CO2 input hose is made of chrome plated brass, which means only Stainless Steel will make contact with the beer
- All K&B Couplers come with a 1 Year Manufacturer’s Warranty
What the historical record does—and does not—show
The documented case is a bar-focused system designed around under-counter chilling, reusable kegs, and fresh lines. HEINEKEN connected those features to energy use, freshness, hygiene, and operating costs. The sources cited here are company releases and sustainability reports; they do not establish an independent lifecycle assessment or verify the comparative energy claim under specified test conditions.
They also do not establish whether David XL Green remains available, supported, or deployed today. A venue operator evaluating current draught equipment would need current supplier information and site-specific figures for energy consumption, cleaning and line replacement, maintenance, keg format, and operating costs rather than relying on the historical claims alone.
