Closing the medical device field service knowledge gap takes more than sending technicians to courses. Healthcare organizations need to match training to the devices and tasks their teams handle, provide access to reliable service information and support, build supervised hands-on experience, and verify that technicians can perform assigned work safely. In the United States, AAMI and TechNation’s 2025 HTM survey points to workforce and training pressures, while FDA guidance underscores why servicing quality and careful regulatory boundaries matter.

What is the medical device field service knowledge gap?

It is the mismatch between the capabilities needed to service the devices in use and the capabilities available to the people responsible for that work. It is not one universal skills shortage: the relevant gap varies by device, task, service environment, and the information and support available to the technician.

For a healthcare technology management (HTM) team, capability may include:

  • Electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical fundamentals relevant to the assigned equipment.
  • Device-specific operating principles, maintenance procedures, service documentation, and troubleshooting methods.
  • Software, networking, cybersecurity, and integration knowledge when equipment connects to hospital IT, electronic health records, or other platforms.
  • Judgment about when a task is within the technician’s competence and when to stop and seek qualified technical support.

A course can address one part of that picture, but capability also depends on access to information, tools, parts, and appropriate support. AAMI describes this broader idea as device supportability: the degree to which a device or system can be supported effectively and economically throughout its life cycle, including through information, training, technical support, tools, and spare parts.

Why are HTM teams under pressure to build capability?

AAMI and TechNation’s 2025 State of HTM survey is a U.S. industry snapshot, not a census of hospitals or a measure of every technician’s skills. AAMI’s 2026 account says 947 HTM professionals participated. Respondents described recruitment difficulties, impending retirements, limited early-career candidates, insufficient succession planning, and insufficient training as career-related concerns. The same account points to increasingly complex devices and expanding cybersecurity, software, IT, and connected-platform responsibilities as factors changing the work. These findings describe respondent views; they do not establish that all HTM departments face the same conditions.

Several figures in AAMI’s account help show the scale of the workforce pipeline, but each has a specific scope:

  • Workforce demand: AAMI relays a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projection of 8,800 additional biomedical equipment repairers by 2033. AAMI reports the figure; the underlying BLS publication was not independently verified for this article.
  • Education programs: AAMI reports that NCES College Navigator listed 113 institutions with Biomedical Technology/Technician programs under CIP code 15.0401. Directory counts can change, and this figure is relayed by AAMI rather than independently checked against NCES records.
  • Apprenticeship: In its 2026 account, AAMI reported 16 graduates and 60 people currently enrolled in its two-year BMET Apprenticeship Program. These are time-sensitive program counts, not an evaluation of the program’s outcomes.

AAMI also reports survey concerns about some OEMs withholding service documentation or limiting access to parts or software. That is a reported structural barrier, not a claim about every manufacturer or device. A small HTM department may have a different mix of staffing, service access, and training needs than a large organization; the survey account notes that smaller community hospitals can have comparatively small teams.

Why does servicing knowledge matter to safety?

The U.S. FDA says timely, cost-effective, quality maintenance and repair are important to the functioning of the healthcare system and to the continued quality, safety, and effectiveness of marketed devices. It warns that poor-quality servicing may contribute to poor performance, malfunction, or adverse events, and identifies cybersecurity as an important consideration in device servicing.

FDA defines servicing as “the repair and/or preventive or routine maintenance of one or more parts in a finished device, after distribution, for purposes of returning the device to the safety and performance specifications established by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and to meet its original intended use.” That definition makes the intended result central: servicing aims to return the device to its established specifications and original intended use.

Servicing is not automatically the same as remanufacturing

FDA distinguishes servicing from remanufacturing. Its May 2024 final guidance is intended to help determine whether activities performed on a particular device are likely to constitute remanufacturing and discusses the regulatory responsibilities of remanufacturers. The distinction cannot be reduced to who performed the work: the activities and their effects on that specific device matter. Organizations should consult current FDA guidance when assessing work that could alter a device’s performance, safety specifications, or intended use.

How can an organization close capability gaps?

A practical program starts by treating each gap as a combination of work scope, technician competence, and supportability. The following steps are an operational framework, not a claim that one intervention has been proven to close the gap across organizations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Map work to devices and tasks. List the equipment the team supports, the preventive maintenance and repair tasks it performs, the service information required, and the competencies each task demands. Include software, network, and cybersecurity considerations where they apply. This makes training needs specific rather than relying on a generic job title.
  2. Set clear task boundaries. Define which tasks a technician may perform independently, which require supervision or technical support, and which must be referred elsewhere. Make escalation expectations clear when documentation is unavailable, a device behaves unexpectedly, or a proposed repair could affect established specifications or intended use.
  3. Build structured, supervised experience. Pair foundational instruction with practical work on relevant equipment, documented supervision, and staged responsibility. AAMI says its HTM Training Guide is intended to help departments establish BMET training programs or internships; it is a guide, not a step-by-step internship manual. AAMI also describes its two-year BMET Apprenticeship Program as one workforce pathway, but the reported enrollment and graduate counts do not demonstrate its effectiveness.
  4. Secure the support needed to do the work. For each device, identify how staff obtain authoritative service information, technical assistance, appropriate tools, software access, and spare parts. A training plan cannot compensate for missing service documentation or inaccessible support. AAMI’s supportability framework places these resources alongside training as life-cycle requirements.
  5. Cover connected-device responsibilities. Where a device connects to a network or other systems, ensure assigned staff understand the relevant interfaces, security processes, and escalation routes to IT or cybersecurity colleagues. The precise depth of training should follow the device and tasks involved, rather than assuming every BMET needs the same software or networking expertise.
  6. Check competence in the work itself. Use task-specific demonstrations, supervised sign-offs, and records of authorization to confirm that a person can perform assigned work. Course attendance or certification can document learning or recognized knowledge, but neither alone establishes safe performance on every device or task.

Which training and standards resources can help?

AAMI’s HTM resources cover competency, training, cybersecurity, servicing, and workforce topics. Its HTM Training Guide can help a department plan a BMET training program or internship. FDA’s recognized standards listing describes AAMI TIR 49:2013/(R)2020 as guidance for instructional and training materials for medical devices used in non-clinical environments, while noting that much of its information can also apply in clinical environments.

AAMI says its HTM certifications recognize knowledge of medical devices and clinical practice, along with repair and maintenance skills. Treat certification as one component of development rather than proof that a technician is qualified for every device-specific service task. Match any credential or training resource to the work the team actually performs.

How can HTM leaders tell whether the response is working?

Track whether the program addresses the needs identified in the department’s work map, rather than counting training hours alone. Useful operational checks include:

  • Whether each assigned task has a documented competency expectation and an approved path for supervision or escalation.
  • Whether technicians can access the service information, tools, parts, software, and technical support required for their assigned work.
  • Whether supervised practice and competency sign-offs keep pace with new devices, changing tasks, and staff turnover.
  • Whether recurring service problems reveal gaps in training, documentation, equipment support, or coordination with IT and cybersecurity teams.

These checks can help an organization manage its own capability and supportability, but the sources summarized here do not establish which intervention measurably closes the knowledge gap or improves patient outcomes. AAMI vice president of HTM Danielle McGeary described ongoing efforts including outreach, standards development, the BMET apprenticeship, and a partnership with HOSA-Future Health Professionals; those initiatives are workforce-development activity, not evidence of comparative outcomes.
