India removed the 18% GST on individual health insurance premiums, including family floaters, from September 22, 2025. That reduced the bill when the underlying premium stayed the same—but it did not prevent later changes to the base premium. Renewal reports in 2026 describe increases for some policyholders, but they do not establish a representative national average.
What changed when GST was removed
The exemption applies to individual health insurance policies, including family floaters, from September 22, 2025. It does not extend this individual-policy exemption to group health policies. The change removed the former 18% GST charge from eligible premiums; it did not set future insurer prices.
For example, a ₹30,000 base premium previously cost ₹35,400 after 18% GST. With the same base premium and no GST, the bill is ₹30,000—a saving of ₹5,400. That is 18% of the base premium, or about 15.25% of the former tax-inclusive bill. The example assumes the insurer’s base premium did not change. The Indian Express explained this arithmetic in September 2025.

What happened to renewals in 2026
Renewal experiences reported in 2026 were mixed. Moneycontrol reported that S K Sethi, director of Ria Insurance Brokers, had seen rates at many insurers rise by as much as 35% over the previous 12 months. Its headline also cited broker data indicating 25–41% renewal hikes in 2026. The story does not establish that range as a representative market average, so it should not be read as the increase faced by all policyholders.

The same report quoted Niva Bupa Health Insurance executive director and CFO Vishwanath Mahendra cautioning against interpreting individual increases as industry-wide annual repricing of 25–40%. He said pricing can vary by product, age, geography, sum insured, product changes and where a product is in its pricing cycle. Moneycontrol’s October 6, 2026 report does not provide a comprehensive policy-level series showing the average one-year change across insured people.
Why tax relief and a higher renewal bill can both be true
On February 3, 2026, the Ministry of Finance told the Rajya Sabha that general and health insurers had confirmed they had not increased premiums on account of the GST exemption and had passed the relief to policyholders. The ministry said IRDAI had communicated this to the Department of Financial Services on January 7, 2026. This was a dated statement about passing on the tax relief, not a guarantee that base premiums would never rise later. Read the Ministry of Finance’s Rajya Sabha answer.

GST and the insurer’s base premium are separate parts of the bill. Removing the tax lowers the tax portion; a later base-rate revision, a change in the insured person’s age band, a cover increase or a product migration can still raise the renewal amount. Bajaj General Insurance MD and CEO Tapan Singhel, quoted by Moneycontrol, described medical inflation as close to 13%. That is his stated figure, not an independently verified national medical-inflation index.

- Separate premium from tax. Record the previous base premium, any GST shown on the old bill, the new base premium and the new tax line. Compare the amounts due on the relevant payment dates rather than treating the old tax-inclusive total as the base price.
- Check the people and ages covered. Note each insured member and whether anyone crossed an age band between renewals.
- Keep location and cover constant. Compare the same rating geography, sum insured, deductible, co-pay and add-ons.
- Check the product version. Look for a migration, upgrade or changed policy terms. A new product or added benefit is not a like-for-like renewal.
- Ask the insurer to explain the difference. Request a written breakdown of the base-premium change and the factors applied. If you compare alternatives, use the same members, location, cover, deductible, co-pay and add-ons.
What the rules say about pricing and renewals
IRDAI’s health-insurance FAQ describes pricing as based on age and other applicable risk factors. It also says filed premiums ordinarily remain unchanged for three years after a product is cleared, and that individual and family-floater premiums remain unchanged for the term of the policy. Those statements concern different time periods: a premium during the policy term is distinct from the price offered at renewal, and the three-year statement is about a product’s filed premium. Read the current IRDAI FAQ for the applicable wording and context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there a national average increase one year after GST removal?
The available figures cited here do not establish one. Broker observations and reported renewal examples can show that some customers faced substantial increases, but they are not a census or a representative rate index. Nor should growth in insurers’ total premium collections be treated as the same thing as an average change in an individual policy’s renewal rate.
The most supportable conclusion is narrower: the GST exemption reduced the tax charge on eligible individual health policies, insurers had told the government they passed on that relief, and some policyholders later encountered higher renewal prices for reasons that can include changes to the base rate or policy details. To know what happened to a particular renewal, compare its base premium and coverage with the prior policy rather than relying on a headline percentage.
