HDFC Bank makes most of its core banking income from the spread between interest earned on loans and investments and interest paid on deposits and other funding. It reports that spread as net interest income (NII); net interest margin (NIM) expresses it as a percentage of a stated asset base. Fees and other income add to revenue, but operating expenses, credit-loss provisions and taxes still stand between revenue and profit.

The latest quarterly results listed by HDFC Bank as of October 7, 2026 cover the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Figures below use the bank’s standalone Indian GAAP results unless otherwise noted.

How the bank’s core interest engine works

Deposits fund the balance sheet

Customers keep money in current, savings and time-deposit accounts. HDFC Bank uses this funding to support loans and investments, while paying interest on some of it. The cost and mix of funding affect the difference between interest income and interest expense; no single deposit category determines profitability by itself.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, HDFC Bank reported average deposits of ₹30,115 billion and period-end deposits of ₹31,708 billion. At quarter-end, these included ₹7,008 billion in savings deposits, ₹3,245 billion in current-account deposits and ₹21,455 billion in time deposits. Current- and savings-account deposits (CASA) represented 32.3% of total deposits. These balances show the funding mix, not its complete cost: repricing, liquidity requirements and the assets funded also matter. HDFC Bank’s financial-results materials

Loans and investments earn interest

The bank earns interest on advances and bills, investments, balances with the Reserve Bank of India and other interbank funds, among other items. Gross advances stood at ₹30,608 billion as of June 30, 2026. Year-on-year, retail loans grew 7.2%, small and mid-market enterprise loans 18.7%, and corporate and other wholesale loans 18.6%. Those growth rates describe lending activity; they do not by themselves show the yield earned or the profit on each loan.

NII and NIM describe different things

Net interest income is a rupee amount for a reporting period: interest earned minus interest expended. HDFC Bank reported standalone NII of ₹335.3 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 6.7% from ₹314.4 billion in the quarter ended June 30, 2025.

Net interest margin is a ratio, so its denominator matters. For that June 2026 quarter, the bank reported NIM of 3.26% on total assets and 3.40% on interest-earning assets. Its FY2025–26 annual disclosure reported 3.34% as a percentage of average assets. These figures use different periods and, for the quarterly measures, different denominators; they are not interchangeable. Where fees and other income fit

Interest is not the bank’s only source of income. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, standalone other income was ₹128.2 billion, comprising:

  • Foreign-exchange and derivatives revenue: ₹13.0 billion.
  • Net trading and mark-to-market gain: ₹4.2 billion.
  • Miscellaneous income, including recoveries and dividends: ₹26.6 billion.

Fees and commissions were the largest listed component of other income in that quarter. HDFC Bank’s lending-practices code says retail loan and credit-card application forms set out applicable fees or charges, possible refunds if an application is not accepted, and prepayment options. It does not establish a single fee amount: charges can depend on the product and may change. HDFC Bank’s fair-practices code for lenders

Some other-income items can be lumpy

Trading and mark-to-market gains can vary substantially. The June 2025 comparison quarter included ₹91.3 billion in transaction gains from a partial divestment in HDB Financial Services, which HDFC Bank identifies as an exceptional item. That one-off makes a simple year-on-year comparison of other income less representative of recurring fee or trading activity.

Why revenue is not profit

Income figures do not account for the full cost of running a bank or absorbing loan losses. In the June 2026 quarter, HDFC Bank reported operating expenses of ₹181.9 billion, provisions and contingencies of ₹30.6 billion, and profit after tax of ₹190.6 billion. The bank also reported a 39.2% cost-to-income ratio for that quarter; comparisons with another bank or period are meaningful only on a consistent reporting and accounting basis.

For FY2025–26, the bank reported net revenue of ₹1,91,218.6 crore and profit after tax of ₹74,671.3 crore. Its annual disclosure defines net revenue as NII plus other income. Net revenue is therefore not the same as net profit: expenses and provisions must still be accounted for. Annual figures cover a full financial year and should not be mixed with quarterly totals. How to compare HDFC Bank’s results over time

When evaluating whether the bank’s earnings engine is strengthening, compare like with like rather than relying on one headline ratio. Useful measures include:

  • NIM with the same asset denominator and reporting period.
  • NII growth alongside growth in average loans and deposits.
  • Deposit composition and funding costs, not CASA share alone.
  • Fee income as a portion of revenue, separated from volatile trading or exceptional gains.
  • Operating expenses and credit provisions on the same reporting basis.
  • Standalone figures against standalone figures, or consolidated against consolidated.
