Halogen bonds can arrange benzene-based molecules into windmill-like patterns—but the reported structures were imaged in two-dimensional assemblies on a silver surface, not shown to be the default shape of these substances everywhere. The study used an inelastic tunneling probe to reveal how the molecules interacted at the surface.
What does a molecular “windmill” look like?
In the reported assemblies, halogenated benzene molecules formed a patterned network rather than an arbitrary pile. A contemporaneous account describes hexafluorobenzene (C₆F₆) and hexabromobenzene (C₆Br₆) on silver forming a central triangular arrangement of halogen bonds, along with diagonal contacts between halogens that were not directly opposite one another. Together, those interactions give the assembly its windmill-like appearance.
The word “windmill” describes the geometry of the molecular interaction pattern. It does not mean that individual molecules spin like mechanical blades.

A halogen bond is a directional, noncovalent attraction involving a halogen attached to one molecule and an electron-rich region on another. In the explanation given for these assemblies, the region along the extension of a carbon–halogen bond is relatively electron-poor. It is called a σ-hole, and it can attract an electron-rich region around a neighboring carbon–halogen bond.

Because this attraction depends on direction, it can help guide how molecules orient themselves relative to one another. Halogens also differ in size and polarizability, so their interactions should not be treated as interchangeable. The fluorine-containing structures drew particular attention because fluorine is commonly considered an unlikely participant in σ-hole bonding.
Which molecules formed which patterns?
| Molecule | Reported interaction pattern | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Hexafluorobenzene (C₆F₆) | Central triangular arrangement of halogen bonds with additional diagonal contacts | Two-dimensional assembly on silver |
| Hexabromobenzene (C₆Br₆) | Central triangular arrangement of halogen bonds with additional diagonal contacts | Two-dimensional assembly on silver |
| 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene | Two kinds of fluorine–fluorine interactions and V-shaped bifurcated interactions, in which one hydrogen is associated with two neighboring halogens | A distinct molecular example reported on silver; it is not the fully halogenated windmill result |
The patterns show that changing which atoms occupy a benzene molecule can change the interactions available to the assembly. The 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene result is related to the study of halogen bonding, but it should not be conflated with the windmill motif described for the fully halogenated molecules.

How did the researchers image the bonds?
Zhumin Han and coauthors used an inelastic tunneling probe to image intermolecular bonding structures in two-dimensional molecular self-assemblies on a metal surface. Their paper describes directly visualizing intermolecular attraction and the “windmill” bonding pattern among fully halogenated molecules. This is a specialized surface-science method for examining molecular-scale structure, rather than an ordinary photograph of molecules.

What does the result establish—and what does it not?
The work supports the conclusion that halogen bonds can help organize particular halogenbenzene molecules into distinctive patterns when they self-assemble in two dimensions on silver. It also provides evidence about the nature of those intermolecular attractions. As Han and coauthors put it in the paper abstract, “Our results provide a hitherto missing understanding of the nature of the halogen bond.”
It does not establish that these windmills are the usual structure of the same compounds in solution, in bulk crystals, or in other environments. The reported arrangement is tied to specific molecules assembling on a metal surface; changing the surroundings can change which interactions are favored and how molecules pack.
