In Grand Theft Auto V, one to five wanted stars show the degree of police interest. In GTA Online, Rockstar specifically recommends using tunnels to evade police or calling Lester to remove a wanted level for a fee. The available official guidance does not provide a complete account of search behavior or a reliable police-response chart for each star, so those details should not be treated as established here.
What wanted stars mean in GTA V
The official GTA V manual documents a wanted display of one to five stars. The stars indicate the degree of police interest in the player. This describes GTA V; it should not be assumed to apply unchanged across every Grand Theft Auto game.
How to deal with a wanted level in GTA Online
Evade police
Rockstar’s GTA Online starter tips suggest using tunnels to evade police. This is practical advice, not a complete explanation of the game’s search rules or a guarantee that a particular route will clear a level.

Pay Lester to remove it
Rockstar’s starter tips also say players can call Lester to remove a wanted level for a fee. The price is not established as a current amount by that advice. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.06 notes from 2013 recorded a fee of GTA$200 per star. That is a historical update price, not confirmation of today’s fee.

What the star levels do—and do not—tell you
The official manual establishes the one-to-five-star display, but the sources cited here do not establish which police units or tactics appear at each level. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.68 notes mention two specific GTA Online unlock conditions: surviving a three-star wanted level for five minutes makes an unmarked cruiser available for purchase, and naturally losing a four- or five-star wanted level unlocks the Police Riot. These are unlock requirements, not a star-by-star guide to police response.
What is known about police searches
The GTA V manual’s description of the wanted display does not explain search zones, line of sight, last-known location, or how long a search lasts. The cited official material therefore does not support a reliable step-by-step account of the search phase after police lose sight of a player. Advice about those mechanics should not be presented as confirmed by these sources.

Wanted levels in GTA Online activities
Races
Rockstar’s Race Creator guide says that enabling the Wanted Level option allows police to chase race participants. This setting concerns creator-made races, not every standard GTA Online activity.
Mission Creator
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.72 notes, dated January 27, 2026, report that Wanted Level Options were added to the Mission Creator. That is a creator feature and does not, by itself, describe how wanted levels work throughout Story Mode or Freemode.

How to read GTA wanted-level advice
- Check which game and mode the advice concerns; GTA V, GTA Online, and creator activities are not interchangeable.
- Treat a dated update price as historical unless a current official source confirms it.
- Do not infer a complete police tactic or search mechanic from an isolated star threshold in an unlock requirement.
