Import GST and a jewellery buyer’s GST are different tax stages. India collects IGST on imported gold at customs clearance, while the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) says GST on a consumer’s jewellery purchase is 3% of the total transaction value—including separately listed making charges. Import IGST may be available as input tax credit to an eligible registered importer, so it does not automatically add the same amount again to a shopper’s bill.
What happens to GST when gold is imported?
IGST is collected when imported gold clears customs. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ describes a nominated bank paying IGST at clearance; that example should not be read as a description of every importer’s supply chain. Imported-goods guidance explains that IGST is calculated using an import tax base that includes the assessable value plus applicable customs duties and other customs-like charges. The exact total depends on the item’s tariff classification and current customs notifications, so there is no single import-tax percentage to apply to every gold product.

Does import GST automatically make jewellery more expensive?
Not by a fixed percentage. An eligible registered importer may claim credit for import IGST, subject to the applicable rules and documentation, and use it against tax on outward supplies. The cited CBIC import guidance says Basic Customs Duty (BCD) is not available as input tax credit under the framework it describes. These are different costs: an IGST credit may offset tax liability, while non-creditable customs duty can remain a cost in the supply chain.

That does not establish how much of either cost a seller includes in a particular retail price. Gold-market prices, customs treatment, business costs, retailer margins and design-specific making charges also affect the price. CBIC’s guidance explains tax treatment, not a guaranteed pass-through percentage to consumers.
How is GST calculated on a consumer’s jewellery bill?
CBIC’s sectoral FAQ says GST on a retail sale of gold, diamond or silver jewellery is 3% of the total transaction value, whether making charges are shown separately or not. Its example illustrates the calculation:

This is CBIC’s illustrative example, not a current market quote. The FAQ’s answer is that the 3% applies to the total transaction value; it is not 3% on the gold plus a separate 5% consumer GST on making charges. CBIC’s GST Goods and Services Rates page also lists 3% for the cited Chapter 71 jewellery and gold categories.

Why do some references mention 5% on making charges?
That figure concerns a different transaction: job work. CBIC’s FAQ describes 5% GST on job charges when a registered job worker returns gold as finished jewellery to a manufacturer. The manufacturer may claim eligible credit and use it against GST on outward jewellery sales. This business-to-business job-work treatment is not the consumer’s GST calculation for buying the finished jewellery; the FAQ applies 3% to the total retail transaction value.

- Check that the GST calculation for the finished jewellery matches the applicable treatment of the total transaction value described by CBIC.
- Compare making charges and other listed costs across designs and sellers; they are not set by the import-IGST credit mechanism.
- If a seller cites import duties as the reason for a price difference, ask which charge is being included. A precise import-duty total requires the item’s classification and current customs rules.
