GST on an online marketplace purchase in India depends on the goods or service you buy—not on a special, universal “online shopping” rate. The supplier generally accounts for GST on the sale. A marketplace may separately collect tax at source (TCS) on qualifying sales, but that is an operator-side settlement and reporting mechanism, not a second GST charge to add to your order total.
Is GST charged separately on online shopping in India?
GST applies to a taxable purchase at the rate for that particular good or service and its classification. There is no single GST rate for all online orders. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) organizes rates by goods and services classifications; check its GST goods and services rates reference for the relevant category. The rate shown for a specific transaction should also be checked against its invoice and current rules.
An order may show GST as a separate line or include it in the displayed price, depending on how the transaction is presented. What matters for checking the tax is the invoice’s taxable value, rate and tax amount—not whether the checkout displayed a separate line.
Who pays GST on Amazon, Flipkart or another marketplace order?
For an ordinary sale of goods or services by a seller through a marketplace, the supplier’s GST liability on the underlying supply is distinct from the platform’s TCS role. An electronic commerce operator is a person that owns, operates or manages the platform. Where it collects payment for qualifying supplies made by other suppliers, the operator may have to collect TCS on the net value of taxable supplies and account for it through the GST system. CBIC explains these roles in its Sectoral FAQs on Electronic Commerce and Tax Collection at Source.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
TCS is not an extra consumer GST line to add to the order. It is collected by the operator against qualifying supplier sales as part of the settlement and reporting process. CBIC’s electronic-commerce FAQs describe a 1% TCS rate for the cases covered there, split as 0.5% CGST and 0.5% SGST for intra-State supplies. The FAQ page does not establish that this rate remains current as of 7 October 2026; check the operative notification before relying on it as the current rate. The rate is not a second GST charge on the buyer in any event.
Limited exception for certain services
For service categories specified by notification under section 9(5) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, the operator pays GST as if it were the supplier. This is a limited exception for notified services; it should not be generalized to goods sold through a marketplace. See the CGST Act and CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs: Electronic Commerce.

Why was GST added to my online order?
If the underlying good or service is taxable, GST applies at the rate for its classification. The marketplace is the route through which you bought it; it does not determine a single rate for every order. To understand a particular charge, compare the product or service description, taxable value, displayed rate and tax amount on the invoice. Rates and classifications are listed in CBIC’s official rate reference.

Start with the tax invoice rather than relying only on an order confirmation or payment receipt, which may not contain every required invoice detail. CBIC’s tax invoice rules list particulars that can include the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a unique invoice number and issue date; HSN or accounting code; description; quantity for goods; total and taxable values; tax rate and amount; and place-of-supply information for applicable inter-State cases. Other recipient details may depend on registration status and transaction value.

- Check that the supplier named on the invoice corresponds to the seller for the transaction; that supplier is the useful starting point for questions about the underlying supply.
- Compare the description, taxable value, rate and tax amount with the order details.
- Check the supplier’s GSTIN and the invoice number and date.
- If you cannot find the invoice, use the platform’s order record or support channel to locate it.
What happens to GST if I return an online order?
CBIC says returned supplies reduce the net value used in the operator’s TCS calculation. That is an operator-side adjustment; it does not specify one refund timeline or method for every consumer transaction. Keep the platform’s refund record and any credit note or updated invoice, then check how the order record reflects the refund.

| What to compare | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Goods or service classification | The applicable GST rate depends on the actual supply and its classification. Use CBIC’s rate reference as a starting point. |
| Supplier named on the invoice | Helps identify the supplier responsible for the ordinary underlying sale; the platform’s possible TCS role is separate. See CBIC’s e-commerce FAQ and invoice rules. |
| Invoice tax details | Compare description, taxable value, rate and tax amount, along with the supplier’s GSTIN. See CBIC’s tax invoice rules. |
| Transaction type | For services, determine whether the supply falls into a category notified under section 9(5) before treating the operator as liable for GST. See the CGST Act and CBIC’s e-commerce FAQ. |
| Return status | Check whether a credit note or amended invoice records the return and how the platform records the refund. See CBIC’s e-commerce FAQ and invoice rules. |
This is a general explanation for consumers in India, not item-specific tax advice. GST rates depend on the goods or services and their classification; verify the current notification and the invoice for a specific purchase.
