Yes. Google TV Streamer (4K) can be more than a streaming player: Google identifies it as a Google Home and Matter hub with a built-in Thread border router. That lets compatible Matter devices communicate through Google Home, including devices using Wi‑Fi and devices using Thread. The Thread function must be enabled and operating; simply owning the Streamer does not automatically make every Thread device reachable.
What the Google TV Streamer does in a smart home
The Streamer has three related roles. It is an entertainment device, a Google Home hub, and a Matter hub. Its built-in Thread border router adds a fourth networking function that matters when your accessories use Thread.
Google Home hub
A Google Home hub provides the on-network presence that lets Google Home manage compatible devices when you are at home and supports automations and remote access through the Google Home ecosystem. Google says its own Google devices do not require a special hub procedure beyond connecting them to the home network and adding them in Google Home.
Matter hub
Matter is the interoperability standard used by compatible smart-home products. A Matter-certified light, lock, thermostat, or other accessory can be added to a Matter-capable platform when the platform supports that device category and transport. The Streamer supplies the Google Home and Matter hub role for that environment.

Thread border router
Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology, not the smart-home command standard itself. Thread end devices exchange packets over the mesh, while a border router connects that mesh to the home IP network. The Streamer can perform that bridge and can either create a Thread network or join an existing one.
Matter and Thread are different layers
Confusing the two technologies is the source of many setup problems. Matter defines how supported devices, controllers, and platforms communicate and interoperate. Thread is one possible network transport for Matter, alongside Wi‑Fi.
| Question | Matter | Thread |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A smart-home application and interoperability standard | An IPv6-based, low-power mesh network technology |
| What it carries | Commands, device states, commissioning information, and automations | Network traffic between Thread devices and a border router |
| Does the Streamer support it? | Yes, as a Google Home/Matter hub | Yes, through its built-in Thread border router |
| What a device needs | Matter certification, a supported device type, and a compatible platform | Thread radio support plus an active Thread border router for Thread operation |
A Matter device using Wi‑Fi can communicate directly through the home Wi‑Fi network, but a Matter device using Thread needs a Thread border router. A home that mixes both transports therefore needs a hub that supports both. Google lists the Google TV Streamer among its hubs that support Matter over Wi‑Fi and Thread.

- A Google Home/Matter hub: The Streamer must be connected to the home network and available to Google Home.
- IPv6 enabled: Google says Matter requires IPv6-enabled Wi‑Fi for proper operation. Disabling IPv6 on a router can prevent commissioning or communication.
- The current Google Home app: Update the app before pairing.
- A compatible phone or tablet: The setup device needs Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or later for pairing.
- The correct transport: Confirm whether the accessory uses Wi‑Fi or Thread. A Thread accessory needs an active Thread border router.
- Matter certification and supported category: Look for the Matter logo and verify that Google Home currently supports that device type. Platforms add categories at different times.
- Network proximity during commissioning: Keep the phone, Streamer, and accessory on the same home network during setup, following any distance guidance supplied with the accessory.
Set up Google TV Streamer for Google Home and Thread
Thread activation is part of the Streamer’s setup flow. The exact screen wording can change with software updates, but the required choices are consistent.
- Connect and power the Google TV Streamer, then complete its initial on-screen setup.
- Open the Google Home app and add the Streamer to the same home and network used by your other devices.
- When Google services are offered during setup, accept the services prompt that enables Thread. Declining or skipping that step can leave the Streamer available for streaming while its Thread border-router function is inactive.
- Allow the Streamer to finish updates and remain powered. A border router cannot serve a Thread mesh while it is offline.
- On the television, open Google TV Settings > Network and Internet and inspect the Thread network setting. The toggle should show Thread enabled when you intend to use Thread accessories.
- If your home already has a Thread network, the Streamer can join it. Otherwise, Google says it can create a new Thread network.
There is no separate accessory or special Thread subscription required for this role. An Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable may be sold separately for audiovisual performance, but it is not a prerequisite for Matter or Thread operation.
Add a Matter accessory in Google Home
Use the accessory’s Matter QR code or setup code. The following sequence reflects Google’s documented requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
- Install or update the Google Home app on a phone or tablet with Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or later.
- Confirm that the Streamer is online, IPv6 is enabled on the home network, and Thread is enabled if the accessory uses Thread.
- In Google Home, choose the option to add a device, then select the Matter-device path.
- Scan the accessory’s Matter QR code. If scanning is not possible, enter the numeric setup code supplied with the product.
- Follow the app prompts to select the home and room, assign a name, and complete commissioning.
- Wait for the accessory to appear online before creating automations or moving it to another room.
- Test a basic command from Google Home. A Thread device should remain reachable after the phone leaves Bluetooth range because normal operation uses the Thread mesh and border router, not the phone’s Bluetooth connection.
Bluetooth is used for initial pairing; it is not the transport that carries ordinary Matter commands after setup. The accessory’s Wi‑Fi or Thread connection handles normal operation.

How commands travel once setup is complete
For a Wi‑Fi Matter accessory, commands stay on the home IP network when issued from home. For a Thread Matter accessory, the command reaches the Thread mesh through the Streamer’s border-router function. Google describes commands issued at home as traveling locally over Wi‑Fi or Thread.
The border router does not turn every Thread accessory into a Wi‑Fi device. It forwards traffic between the Thread mesh and the home network while the end device remains a Thread device. This distinction explains why a Thread accessory can be reachable even though it does not appear as a conventional Wi‑Fi client in the router’s device list.
Multi-platform control with Matter Multi-Admin
Matter Multi-Admin allows a compatible device to be shared with multiple Matter-certified apps. For example, one accessory can be commissioned to Google Home and then shared with another supported Matter platform. Each platform still needs an appropriate hub for the transport it uses. Sharing a device does not remove the requirement for a Thread border router when the device operates over Thread.
Choosing the Streamer versus another Google Home hub
Do not compare hubs only by their product names. Compare the role your home needs and the hardware already installed.

| Decision factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Transport mix | Wi‑Fi Matter only, or both Wi‑Fi and Thread? | A mixed network needs a hub that also functions as a Thread border router. |
| Thread availability | Google lists Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer as Google Home Thread border-router options. | Existing compatible hardware may already provide the required Thread bridge. |
| Entertainment needs | Do you also want a Google TV streaming device in the same room? | The Streamer combines the streaming role with the smart-home hub role. |
| Existing setup | Is another Google Home hub online and properly configured? | You may not need additional hub hardware if the existing hub supports the accessory’s transport and device category. |
| Third-party accessory support | Matter logo, Wi‑Fi or Thread marking, and current Google Home device-type support | Matter certification alone does not guarantee that every platform supports every category immediately. |
The Streamer is particularly useful when you want one device to handle television streaming and the Google Home/Matter role. If your home already has a supported Thread border router, buying another hub solely for Thread may not add capability, although placement and network resilience can still influence your design.
Troubleshoot a failed Matter or Thread setup
Use the symptom that matches what you see instead of repeating the entire commissioning process.
| Symptom | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| Google Home says the device requires a Thread border router | Confirm the Streamer is powered and online, the phone and Streamer are on the same network, the Thread toggle is enabled, other border routers are online, and software is current. Restart the Streamer and the relevant border router, then retry. |
| QR-code setup stops before completion | Update Google Home, verify IPv6, keep Bluetooth enabled on the phone, confirm the accessory is a supported Matter category, and retry near the Streamer or router. |
| A Thread accessory appears briefly, then goes offline | Check that Thread remains enabled, the Streamer has continuous power, and any other border router is online. A disabled or unreachable border router breaks the path from Thread to the home network. |
| The accessory is Matter-certified but cannot be added | Check whether Google Home currently supports that device type and whether the product is Wi‑Fi or Thread. Certification does not mean every platform adds every category at the same time. |
| Commands work nearby but not after leaving the room | Nearby behavior may be Bluetooth commissioning rather than normal operation. Complete Matter setup and verify the accessory has joined Wi‑Fi or Thread and that the border router is active. |
Restart sequence
- Confirm the accessory has power.
- Restart the Google TV Streamer.
- Restart any additional Thread border router in the home.
- Reopen Google Home and wait for the hub to show online.
- Retry commissioning with the phone on the same network and Bluetooth enabled.
If the warning literally reads “Your device requires a Thread border router,” Google’s explanation is that the required border router is not currently active and communicating with Thread devices. Treat it as a network-role problem first, not as proof that the accessory is defective.

What happens if you disable Thread
The Thread network setting is under Google TV Settings > Network and Internet. Turning it off stops the Streamer from acting as a Thread border router. Thread devices may lose connectivity or some functions if no other active border router is available.

Google distinguishes this setting from account data: disabling Thread does not remove Thread credentials stored in your Google Account. If you re-enable the function, those credentials are not necessarily erased simply because the radio service was disabled.
Limits and update-sensitive details
Google Home support changes as device categories and software are updated. Check the current compatibility information before purchasing a third-party Matter accessory, especially when its packaging lists a category that may not yet be supported in your region or app version.
The available documentation establishes the Streamer’s hub and border-router roles, but it does not establish a guaranteed wireless range, throughput figure, latency target, or reliability advantage over another hub. Placement, wall construction, power availability, router configuration, and the number and location of Thread routers affect real homes.

Thread credentials, Matter commissioning behavior, and menu labels can also change with Google TV and Google Home updates. Keep the Streamer, phone, router, and accessories updated before diagnosing a problem that appeared after a software change.
Quick Recap
A practical planning checklist
- Inventory each accessory as Matter over Wi‑Fi or Matter over Thread.
- Choose one or more always-powered Google Home hubs that cover those transports.
- Enable IPv6 on the home network.
- Enable Thread on the Streamer if any accessory requires Thread.
- Use the latest Google Home app and a Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2-or-newer phone or tablet for commissioning.
- Verify the Matter logo and current Google Home support for every device category.
- After pairing, test control from the room where the accessory is installed and from another part of the home.
- Document which device is serving as the Thread border router so a future settings change does not leave the mesh disconnected.
