Google Photos does not treat face grouping as infallible identification. When Face Groups is enabled, it detects faces, converts face images into numerical face models, estimates which images are similar, and places likely matches into groups. You can name those groups, search for the names, correct mistakes, or turn the feature off.
The same People & pets area also organizes pets, but Google’s public help documentation explains the face-grouping process in detail and does not publish a separate technical description of animal recognition. Pet grouping has its own display control.
What happens when Google Photos groups faces
Face Groups is a sequence of predictions rather than a claim that Google has definitively identified everyone in a picture. Google describes three main stages.

The system first determines whether an image contains a face. This is face detection: finding a face-shaped subject in the image, not yet deciding whose face it is.

2. Photos creates and compares face models
When Face Groups is enabled, Google says it creates face models that numerically represent face images. It then predicts similarity between face images and estimates whether faces in different images belong to the same person. The documentation does not disclose the model architecture, numerical thresholds, or where each computation occurs.
3. Similar faces are placed in a group
Photos groups faces that appear very similar and are likely to belong to the same person. The result is a likely grouping, not guaranteed identification. Lighting, pose, age, image quality, partial occlusion and unusual expressions can all make a match harder, and Google explicitly says groups are not perfect.
Why a photo can be grouped when a face is not visible
Google says grouping may use more than the visible face. Its help documentation gives two examples: photos taken close together in time and the same clothing appearing across photos. Those signals may help connect images in a sequence when a face is turned away or otherwise unavailable.

How people and pets appear in People & pets
People
Face Groups creates the clusters that appear in the People & pets experience. A cluster can remain unnamed until you add a label. Once labeled, it becomes available for name-based searches and for later corrections.

Pets
Google Photos also presents pets in People & pets. Google’s cited feature documentation does not provide a separate technical explanation of how animal recognition works under the hood, so it is more accurate to describe pet organization as a product feature than to assume it uses the same face-model process as people.
You can control pet display independently. Turning off Show pets with people stops pets from being shown together with people in that experience; it is separate from turning Face Groups for people off entirely.

A label turns an otherwise anonymous group into something you can use in search. Google says the person or pet must be labeled before a name-based query can work.
- Open the People & pets experience in Google Photos.
- Select the person or pet group you want to identify.
- Add a name or nickname and save it.
- Search Photos using that label, alone or with other words.
Google’s examples include Alice and me laughing and Emma at the playground. These are natural-language searches, not special commands. Results still depend on what is in your library and on whether the relevant group has been labeled.
Correct groups that contain the wrong photos
Because grouping is probabilistic, review important groups before relying on them for a complete record. Google provides several correction actions.

Remove an incorrect result
You can remove a photo or video that was placed in the wrong person or pet group. Removing it from the group does not delete the original photo or video from your library. The media remains available elsewhere in Photos unless you separately delete it.

Change a photo’s person or pet label
Google’s Android instructions support changing which person or pet a photo is associated with. Use this when an image belongs to a different labeled group rather than simply being unrelated to every group. The exact controls can differ between Android and other app surfaces.
Merge duplicate groups
If Photos creates two groups for the same individual or animal, you can merge the duplicate groups. This consolidates their contents under one label instead of forcing you to search several names for the same subject.
Settings: enable, disable or adjust what is shown
Google says Face Groups is controlled from Google Photos privacy or face-group preferences, but the path varies by platform and can change as the app is updated.
On a computer
- Open Google Photos and go to Settings.
- Find the face-grouping option labeled Group similar faces.
- Use the control to enable or disable Face Groups.
On Android
- Open Google Photos and enter Photos settings.
- Open Privacy; Google also documents an alternate route through Preferences.
- Locate the Face Groups control and change its setting.
- If you only want to change pet display, use Show pets with people rather than disabling Face Groups for people.
Names and wording can differ by app version, account type and region. If a menu is missing, check both documented settings areas and confirm that your account supports the feature.

Do not confuse hiding a face with turning off Face Groups

Privacy, sharing and biometric-data considerations
Google says face groups and labels are visible only to the account owner by default. They are not shared when you share photos, and face labels are not shared across accounts. Sharing an image therefore does not automatically expose the label attached to a group in your private Photos experience.
Google also says that enabling Face Groups means you want face models to be made, and that those models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That is Google’s characterization; whether a particular law treats the data as biometric information depends on the jurisdiction and circumstances.
The feature’s privacy behavior is different from ordinary photo organization because the service creates derived representations of faces. Consider who can access the Google account, whether other people use the account, and whether you are comfortable retaining those derived models before enabling the feature.

Disabling Face Groups
Google says switching off Face Groups deletes the face groups, face models and labels. If you later enable the feature again, Photos may need to build groups again; the previously deleted group information should not be treated as retained.
Deleting an individual photo or video
Deleting a photo or video deletes face models derived specifically from that item, according to Google. This addresses the model associated with the deleted media, not a promise that every other model for the same person disappears.

More than two years without using Google Photos
Google says all Face Groups content is deleted if you do not use Google Photos for more than two years. The two-year period is a retention policy threshold, not an accuracy or performance statistic.
Availability and why People & pets may be missing
Face Groups is not available in every geographic region, domain or account type. If People & pets does not appear, Google lists several possible explanations:
- Face Groups is unavailable for your region, domain or account type.
- Face Groups is turned off in Photos settings.
- No groups have been created yet.
Check the relevant privacy or face-group setting first. If it is enabled but the experience remains absent, availability restrictions or the lack of any detected groups may be responsible. The exact controls can also differ between the web interface and mobile apps.
How accurate is Google Photos recognition?
Google’s official help pages reviewed for this feature do not publish a numerical recognition-accuracy rate or false-match rate. They state that face groups are not perfect and provide tools for correcting them. Do not interpret a neatly organized group as proof that every item is correct, and do not assume that an unlabeled or missing photo proves the person was not detected.
For dependable organization, label groups gradually and inspect the contents of groups that matter to you. Remove wrong items, change labels when an image belongs elsewhere, and merge duplicates. Those corrections are part of using the feature, not evidence that the system has produced a guaranteed identity record.
A practical way to use the feature
- Check availability: Open People & pets and confirm that Face Groups is present for your account.
- Review before labeling: Look through a proposed group and remove obvious mismatches.
- Use stable labels: Add a name or nickname you will remember when searching.
- Consolidate duplicates: Merge groups that represent the same person or pet.
- Search naturally: Combine a label with an activity or place, such as Alice and me laughing.
- Separate privacy choices: Use Memories hiding for carousel visibility, pet-display controls for People & pets presentation, and Face Groups disabling only when you want the groups, models and labels deleted.
- Revisit after major library changes: New uploads and corrections can change what appears in a group, so review important collections periodically.
The bottom line
Google Photos recognizes people by detecting faces, creating numerical similarity models when Face Groups is enabled, estimating which images match, and grouping likely matches. It can use limited contextual signals such as nearby capture times or matching clothing, but Google does not describe the result as perfect identification. Names, searches, merges and corrections make the feature useful; disabling Face Groups removes its groups, models and labels. Pet grouping is available in the same product area and can be hidden separately, while its technical recognition method is not separately explained in Google’s public help documentation.
