Google Maps personalization does not come from one “location history” switch. Maps can use your current location to make a response relevant, while separately managed records—Maps searches and directions, Search activity, Timeline visits, saved places, reviews, photos, and connected Google content—can shape recommendations when the relevant controls and features are enabled.
The most important distinction is between Maps activity, Timeline, and Web & App Activity or Search history. Timeline is off by default, but turning it off does not necessarily stop every Google service from saving location-related information. The labels and controls are also changing as Google rolls out new Search services settings.
The three data streams behind Maps personalization
Google describes several sources that can affect what Maps shows or how its AI features answer. They have different purposes and different deletion controls, so treating them as one database leads to incorrect privacy conclusions.

How a Maps response becomes personalized
Current location makes an answer locally relevant
Google states that “Google Maps AI-powered features use your data, including your location data, to provide relevant responses.” A request such as finding a nearby restaurant can therefore use the location available to Maps at the time of the request, subject to your device, account, and feature settings.

Current-location use is not the same as saving a long-term visit history. Depending on the feature and your history settings, Google may also store location alongside an interaction. The official description does not support a blanket claim that every Maps response is permanently stored, nor that disabling one history setting blocks all location use.
Personalized Recommendations add account context
When Personalized Recommendations is available and enabled, Maps can draw on more than the place you are near. Google lists these possible inputs:
- Maps searches and directions saved in Maps history or Search Services History.
- Past Ask Maps conversations, where that feature and history setting are available.
- Saved lists and labels.
- Your place reviews, ratings, and photos.
- Search history.
- Information from connected Google content apps.
Availability varies by country, account, device, and rollout stage. A recommendation generated without these inputs is not evidence that every category is enabled on your account.
Timeline records visits and routes separately
Timeline is Google’s record of where an eligible signed-in device has been. Google says it is off by default. If you enable it, precise device location is regularly saved on each eligible signed-in device, including times when Google apps are not in use. Location estimates may combine GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and device sensors.
You can optionally back up Timeline in encrypted form to Google’s servers. That backup is a separate choice from enabling Timeline itself. Timeline can help you review past trips and may support recommendations based on frequently visited places, but it is not the only source of location-related information in a Google account.

Search activity can matter even without Timeline
Web & App Activity or Search Services History can retain searches and other service activity, along with associated information such as a general area or an IP-derived location, depending on your settings. That is why a person can see location-informed results or recommendations even after Timeline has been paused. Google’s account controls explain that saved activity can be viewed, changed, or deleted at any time, but each control applies to its own category.
Does Google Maps track your location?
The accurate answer depends on what “track” means:

- Use for an immediate Maps function: Maps can use your current location to provide a relevant response, including for AI-powered features, subject to settings and feature availability.
- Save a visit-and-route record: This is Timeline, which Google says is off by default and separately controlled.
- Save activity associated with location: Maps history, Search Services History, Web & App Activity, and Search history can retain different activity and location information.
- Keep user-contributed place data: Lists, labels, reviews, ratings, photos, edits, and feedback are separate records.
Consequently, turning off Timeline does not promise that no Google service will save any location-related information. Conversely, deleting Maps history does not delete every Maps-related record.
How to review and reduce personalization
Because Google is gradually introducing new Search services settings, your account may not show every label described below. If a control is missing, Google says Web & App Activity may still manage history and personalized recommendations during the transition.
1. Check Personalized Recommendations
- Open Google Maps while signed in and open the account or profile menu.
- Look for Personalized Recommendations or the equivalent personalization control in your Maps settings.
- Read the categories listed for your account, then enable or disable the setting according to whether you want account-based recommendations.
This setting affects personalization; it does not mean Maps can never use your current location for a map function.

2. Review Maps history or Search Services History
- In Google Maps, open your profile menu and choose Your data in Maps, Maps history, or the similarly named activity page shown for your account.
- Inspect searches, directions, place interactions, shared links, calls, and Ask Maps activity that appear.
- Pause or delete the activity using the controls provided. If your account uses Search Services History, review that setting in Google Account activity controls as well.
Google may use saved Maps activity for personalization only where the applicable feature and settings allow it. Deleting this history does not remove saved contributions or Timeline.

3. Inspect Timeline on every eligible device
- Open Google Account and go to Data & privacy.
- Open Timeline or Manage your Timeline data.
- Check whether Timeline is on, which devices hold Timeline data, and whether encrypted backup is enabled.
- Turn Timeline off, edit individual visits, or delete the date range or complete history you no longer want.
Timeline data can remain on other eligible devices unless you remove it there or use the available all-data deletion option. Turning Timeline off also does not erase activity stored through Web & App Activity or Search Services History.
4. Review Web & App Activity and Search history
- In Google Account, open Data & privacy and find History settings.
- Open Web & App Activity and inspect whether activity saving, location-related options, and automatic deletion are enabled.
- Use the available pause, review, or deletion controls. Also check Search history if it is listed separately.
The exact wording can differ by country, device, and rollout stage. Google’s account activity controls page is the reference for the options displayed on your account.
5. Audit saved content separately
Open your Maps lists, labels, reviews, ratings, photos, and edits and remove individual items you no longer want associated with your account. If you have connected Google content apps, review the connection and the data those apps make available to Maps. These records are not automatically removed when Maps history is deleted.
What deletion actually does
Maps history deletion is staged, not an instant universal wipe
Google’s Maps history guidance describes a sequence: it first aims to remove activity from your visible history; after that, the activity may no longer be used to tailor your experience; Google then begins a process intended to delete it from storage systems. Some information may be retained for limited business or legal purposes. Google does not give a universal completion time, so do not interpret the disappearance of an item from the activity page as proof that every copy has already been erased.

Deleting Maps history does not affect Timeline visits, related searches or website clicks, saved lists and labels, reviews, photos, edits, feedback reports, or other Maps data not associated with the account. Those categories require their own review.
Timeline deletion has its own scope
Deleting or pausing Timeline does not necessarily remove location saved through Search Services History or Web & App Activity. Timeline information may also remain on other eligible devices. For a broader cleanup, inspect each activity control and device rather than relying on one Timeline action.

Google says Search services settings are rolling out gradually. One account may show a dedicated Maps or Search Services History control while another still relies on Web & App Activity for history and personalized recommendations. Feature availability also varies by country, device, account, and the particular Maps AI capability.
If an instruction does not match your screen, search your Google Account’s Data & privacy area for the terms Timeline, Web & App Activity, Search history, and Maps history. Do not assume that a renamed or missing control means the underlying data category has disappeared; it may still be managed by the older activity setting during the rollout.
Choose a privacy setup that matches your goal

Common problems and the right fix
“I turned off Timeline, but Maps still feels personalized.”
Check Personalized Recommendations, Maps or Search Services History, and Web & App Activity. Timeline controls visits and routes; it does not govern every search, direction, saved contribution, or general-area signal.

“I deleted Maps history, but my saved places remain.”
That is expected. Lists, labels, reviews, ratings, photos, edits, and feedback reports are separate from Maps history. Remove those items directly if you want them gone.
“The instructions do not match my account.”
Google is rolling out Search services settings. Use the controls currently visible under Google Account’s Data & privacy area, and check Web & App Activity if a dedicated Maps or Search Services History option is absent.
“I deleted Timeline on my phone, but another device still shows visits.”
Timeline is associated with eligible signed-in devices and optional backup. Review the Timeline data on the other device and use the available deletion controls there as well.

Google Maps personalization is the result of multiple, separately managed inputs. Current location can make a response relevant; Maps and Search activity can inform AI recommendations; Timeline can save precise visits and routes when enabled; and saved contributions or connected content can add further context. To understand or reduce that personalization, review each control independently and treat deletion as category-specific rather than as a single master reset.
