Google Maps restaurant ratings are averages, not rankings. The visible score is the average of all ratings published on Google for that restaurant, using a one-to-five-star scale. A new review can take up to two weeks to affect the displayed score. The order of individual review cards and the restaurant’s position in local search are separate systems with different, only partly documented rules.
This guide explains what diners and restaurant owners can rely on, why a review may be missing, how replies and removals work, and how to compare restaurants without treating one number as a guarantee.
The short version: three different Google Maps signals
When you open a restaurant listing, you are seeing several signals at once:

- Written reviews: individual public contributions that authors can edit or delete and that Google can remove for policy violations.
- Local search position: where the restaurant appears for a particular search, which Google says is mainly influenced by relevance, distance and prominence.
These signals interact, but none is a substitute for the others. A high star score does not guarantee the first position in Maps, a review appearing near the top does not prove it is the newest or highest-rated, and a review count does not tell you whether the recent experiences match the long-term average.

How Google calculates the restaurant star score
The documented formula
Google describes the review score as “the average of all ratings published on Google for that place or business.” Ratings use a one-to-five-star scale, with five stars as the highest rating. In practical terms, Google adds the published star values and divides by the number of published ratings, then displays the resulting score in its interface.
For example, an illustrative set of ratings—five, four, four, three and two stars—has a total of 18 points across five ratings, or an average of 3.6. This arithmetic example explains the principle; it is not a claim about any particular restaurant or Google’s rounding display.
Only published ratings count
The phrase “published on Google” matters. A customer may submit a rating that is temporarily held for checks, never appears because it violates policy, or is removed later. Such a contribution is not part of the currently published set used for the visible average. Reviews that an author deletes also stop contributing to the published score.

Google says a new review may take up to two weeks to be reflected in an updated score. That is an operational window, not a promise that every score will change within exactly 14 days. A single rating may also have a small effect when a listing already has many ratings; the arithmetic impact depends on the existing count and values.
Why the review you see first is not necessarily “the best” review
The average score is a defined calculation, but Google’s cited help material does not publish the complete algorithm that orders individual review cards or chooses which review text to feature prominently. Therefore, do not assume that the first card is the newest, the highest-rated, the most useful or the most representative.

Use the interface controls to inspect different dates, star levels and written details when available. Read several recent reviews as well as older ones, and look for repeated observations rather than treating one prominently displayed comment as a verdict. The visible order can also vary by device, platform, language or location.
What a Google Maps restaurant review actually contains
Stars, text and optional media
A contributor can leave a star rating and optionally add written comments and pictures. The written portion gives context that an average cannot: what was ordered, whether service was slow, how dietary needs were handled, or whether conditions changed after a renovation. Photos can show portions, seating, menus or current products, but they should be dated mentally because restaurants change menus and opening hours.

Google states that all reviews are public and anyone can find what a person adds. Reviews are not anonymous. Other people may be able to see the contributor’s profile name, other Maps photos and videos, location information attached to those contributions and other Maps reviews. Reviewers volunteer their opinions; Google says it does not pay them for posting.
Authors can change or remove their own reviews
A reviewer can edit the text, star rating or included pictures, or delete the review. That means the review history visible today may not be identical to what was first posted. A restaurant cannot treat a customer’s original wording as permanent, and a diner should recognize that an updated review may reflect a later visit or a changed opinion.
Why a restaurant review is delayed or missing
A missing review alone does not establish that the restaurant or Google deliberately suppressed it. Google lists several ordinary explanations:

- Policy checks: moderation can take a few days before a contribution appears.
- Business Profile merges: after recently merged profiles, reviews from both profiles may take a few days to display.
- Older hardware or software: people using older phones or app versions can encounter problems submitting reviews.
- Policy removal: Google may remove content it considers spam or otherwise inappropriate.
A practical troubleshooting sequence for diners
- Wait several days if the review was just submitted; moderation is not necessarily instantaneous.
- Check that the contribution was posted to the intended restaurant listing, especially if nearby locations have similar names.
- Open Google Maps with the same account used to post and look under your profile’s contributions to see whether the review is present there.
- Update the Maps app and operating system if you are using an older phone or software version, then try again only if the original submission failed.
- If the restaurant recently changed ownership or listings were merged, allow additional time for reviews to be consolidated.
- Review the content for spam, promotional language, irrelevant material or other policy issues. Google says it does not reinstate reviews removed for policy violations.
These steps can identify common causes, but they cannot force publication. Google’s moderation and listing systems determine whether a contribution remains visible.

What restaurant owners can and cannot do
Verifying the Business Profile is required to reply
A business must verify its Google Business Profile before replying to reviews. Once a reply is submitted, Google checks it for policy compliance. An approved reply appears publicly beneath the customer’s review as a response from the business, and the customer is notified. The customer can still edit their review afterward.
Google says reply review usually takes up to 10 minutes but can sometimes take up to 30 days. That range describes Google’s review process, not a guarantee that every reply will be published on the shorter schedule.
Owners cannot directly delete a customer’s review
A restaurant cannot simply remove a negative review because it is unfavorable. If the owner believes a review violates Google’s policies, the owner can report it for Google to assess. The platform decides whether policy-based removal is justified; reporting is not a promise of deletion.
How to ask for reviews without creating fake signals
Google allows businesses to remind customers to review through a Google review link or QR code. The request must leave the customer free to describe a genuine experience. Offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for posting a review, changing it or removing a negative review is prohibited as fake and misleading content. Incentives can therefore put both the contribution and the business listing at risk.

Writing a useful public reply
A reply should address the specific issue, avoid revealing private customer information and explain a realistic next step, such as contacting the restaurant through an official channel. Do not pressure the reviewer to edit or delete the post. Because the reply is public, it should help future diners understand how the business handles problems rather than attempt to rewrite the customer’s account.
Place Topics, review snippets and customer photo updates
How summaries are produced
Google’s Place Topics and review snippets are algorithmically selected from recurring words, phrases and themes in reviews. Place Topics appear for businesses with a sufficient amount of quality reviews, but Google does not publish a numeric minimum on the cited help page. Availability and presentation can vary by device, platform, language and location.
A topic such as “vegetarian options” or a snippet mentioning “long wait” is a compressed view of recurring language, not a separately verified statistic. Check the underlying reviews to understand how often the theme appears, when those visits occurred and whether the comments describe the same service period.
Third-party reviews can appear in some listings
Google may show customer reviews from trusted non-Google sources on some Business Profiles. Not every restaurant listing includes them. When they are present, look for the source label or surrounding context so you know which comments were collected outside Google. Do not automatically combine a third-party source’s scoring method with Google’s own star average.

Customer photo updates can show new products, seasonal menus or updated hours and may be useful for judging what a restaurant currently offers. Google says these photo updates do not affect the review score. Treat the photos as visual evidence to inspect, not as additional stars in the average.

Do ratings affect where a restaurant appears in Maps?
Rating and ranking are related but not identical. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence.
- Relevance: how well the listing matches the words and intent of the search.
- Distance: how far the business is from the searcher or the location used for the search.
- Prominence: how well-known the business appears to be. Google says prominence may draw on signals such as links from websites, review volume and positive ratings.
A strong rating can contribute to prominence, but Google does not state that a particular star value guarantees a particular Maps position. Two restaurants with similar ratings can appear in different positions because their distances, search relevance or other prominence signals differ. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
How to compare restaurants using Maps responsibly
Instead of asking which listing has the single “best” number, compare several signals and keep their roles separate:

A five-minute comparison method
- Note the star score and review count together; a score without its count lacks context.
- Read several recent reviews, then sample older ones to detect changes over time.
- Search within the review text for concerns that matter to you, such as noise, queues, allergens, parking or accessibility.
- Check recurring topics and inspect the underlying comments rather than relying only on the generated snippet.
- Look at dated customer photos and the restaurant’s own listing details for menu or hours changes.
- Compare restaurants in the same search area while remembering that Maps position is affected by distance and relevance, not just stars.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “The top review is Google’s official verdict.” Google does not publish the full ordering algorithm in the cited guidance.
- “A missing review proves the restaurant removed it.” Policy checks, profile merges, outdated software and policy removal are all possible explanations.
- “Owners can delete any bad review.” Owners can report suspected violations; Google decides whether to remove content.
- “A free dessert for a review is harmless.” Incentives for posting, changing or removing reviews are prohibited.
- “A five-star restaurant must rank first nearby.” Local ranking also uses relevance, distance and prominence.
- “Photo updates raise the score.” Google says customer photo updates do not affect the review score.
What Google does not disclose
The official guidance establishes the average-based score, moderation rules, owner controls and broad local-ranking factors. It does not disclose the complete review-card display-order algorithm, a numeric threshold for Place Topics or snippets, or a formula that converts a star score into a guaranteed search position. Those details can also vary by region, category, device, language and product version. Treat operational windows and interface features as current guidance rather than permanent guarantees.
For diners, the safest interpretation is to combine the aggregate score with the review count, recent detailed experiences and recurring themes. For owners, focus on genuine customer feedback, policy-compliant replies and accurate profile information; no shortcut can purchase a better local ranking or manufacture a trustworthy average.
