When you search for a place in Google Maps, Google has to interpret what you mean, use location to make local information relevant, and draw on place data assembled from multiple sources. Google describes those broad parts of the process, but it does not publish the exact current formula that ranks every result for every query.
How a place search works, in broad terms
It helps to separate three connected layers: what your words mean, the local context of the search, and the map information available to Google. These describe the process at a high level—not a confirmed technical sequence or a complete account of Maps’ internal ranking systems.
1. Google interprets the query
Google says its systems aim to match a query’s likely intent with relevant information. In an explanation of Google Search, the company uses “pizza” as an example: because people often mean nearby restaurants rather than recipes, Search may show a map of local restaurants. That illustrates how intent can affect the kind of result shown; it is not a complete description of how Google Maps ranks places. Google’s explanation of how Search works.

2. Location can make local results relevant
For a local query, the searcher’s location can help Google identify nearby businesses and information relevant to the area. The result is that the same words may lead to different local information for people in different places. Google’s public explanation does not specify every location-related signal Maps uses or how much weight any one signal receives. Google on how Search ranks results.

3. Google draws on its map and place information
A place search depends on an evolving map, not just the words in the search box. Google says its map is built using sources that include imagery, authoritative third-party data, human work, community contributions and machine learning. That describes how map information is assembled; it does not disclose the ranking formula for a particular search. Google’s account of how it maps the world.
Where Google Maps’ place information comes from
Place details can change as roads, addresses and businesses change. Google says people can report corrections through the Send Feedback feature in Maps. Those submissions are not necessarily published automatically: Google says it reviews contributions and publishes them when it has high confidence they match real roads, businesses and addresses. In a 2019 post, Google Maps engineering director Andrew Lookingbill and product director Ethan Russell wrote: “We also have our community of Local Guides and Google Maps users, whom we empower to correct the map via the Send Feedback button in Google Maps.” The 2019 Google Maps post.

What location settings do—and do not—tell you
Google says location determines which country service a user receives across Search and Maps, and that a country preference is available in settings. This country-service setting is distinct from the location context that can help make an individual local search relevant. It does not, by itself, establish how a particular place search is ranked. What Google has not publicly specified
Google’s public explanations support the broad roles of query meaning, location and changing map data. They do not provide a full technical sequence for a Maps query, enumerate all current ranking features, or state the weight assigned to each signal. As a result, claims that a specific factor always determines the top result—or that the Google Search example fully explains Maps—go beyond what these sources establish.
