Google Maps estimates your arrival time by combining current, aggregated traffic data with historical traffic patterns, then using machine-learning predictions for the roads you will reach later. It predicts travel times across connected road sections, compares candidate routes, and displays the options that best fit the expected conditions, your travel mode, timing, and preferences. The exact formula used to rank every route is not public.
What a Google Maps ETA actually means
The time shown beside a route is a forecast, not a stopwatch reading. Maps estimates how long the complete trip should take under the traffic conditions it expects you to encounter. That requires more than measuring how quickly vehicles are moving right now: congestion can build, clear, or move to another road before you reach it.
Google says it combines live traffic conditions with historical traffic patterns and machine-learning predictions. Its consumer help explains that each route displays an estimated travel time, while route choices can also reflect the selected mode of transport, departure or arrival time, and preferences such as avoiding tolls or motorways. How Google Maps predicts traffic
1. It observes current road conditions
When people navigate with Maps, aggregated location data can help Google estimate how traffic is moving on roads. A concentration of slow-moving devices can indicate congestion; movement close to the expected speed can indicate free-flowing traffic. Google describes this as a way to determine current conditions, not as a complete prediction of what you will face 30 minutes from now.

Navigation data can also support real-time traffic, reported disruptions, weather-related conditions, and faster alternatives during a trip. Google’s explanation of the data used in navigation includes GPS location, navigation details such as the route taken, and device-sensor information. The feature and data settings can vary by platform and region; the details are documented in Google’s navigation-data help.
2. It compares the road with historical patterns
Maps has learned that the same road behaves differently at different times. A segment that is clear at 11 a.m. may be slow during the morning commute, and a Friday evening can differ from a Tuesday evening. Historical traffic patterns provide that time-and-place context when Maps estimates conditions farther along your route.
Historical information is not simply a fixed average. It is a reference pattern that can be combined with what is happening now. If traffic is already moving unusually slowly, the forecast can shift away from the normal pattern.
3. Machine learning forecasts the traffic you have not reached
Google’s product explanation describes the process this way: “We then combine this database of historical traffic patterns with live traffic conditions, using machine learning to generate predictions based on both sets of data.” Read the full account from Google’s Maps 101 article.
The model must account for factors that make traffic difficult to predict, including when rush hour starts or ends, road quality, speed limits, crashes, construction, and closures. An incident that has not yet affected your position can still change the forecast for a later part of the trip.

The technical model Google has publicly described
In a September 2020 technical account, Google DeepMind described a traffic-prediction system based on a graph neural network (GNN). Roads are represented as connected sections rather than as isolated points. The system groups related sections into units called “Supersegments,” processes traffic information for those connected units, and predicts a travel time for each one.
A graph model is useful because a traffic jam on one section can affect neighboring sections. The relationships between roads, junctions, and likely traffic flow are part of the prediction problem. DeepMind said its model was optimized with multiple objectives, rather than a single simplistic rule. The technical description is available in Google DeepMind’s traffic-prediction article.

This is important context, but it is dated evidence. Google and DeepMind publicly described that architecture in 2020; the publication does not prove that every component of the production system is unchanged in 2026. It does establish the broad mechanism Google disclosed: machine learning predicts travel times for connected stretches of road, and those predictions feed route comparison.
How route selection works
Maps generates and evaluates candidate routes
The routing system first identifies plausible paths for your travel mode and request. The traffic-prediction system supplies expected travel times for the road sections in those paths. Maps can then compare the candidate routes using those predictions and present route options in the app.
Google DeepMind’s published diagram and explanation show predicted travel times being used with candidate routes from the Maps routing system to rank routes. That makes predicted travel time a major input, but Google does not publish a complete, current formula for the ranking objective. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim that Maps always chooses the mathematically shortest route or that ETA is the only factor.

Why the blue route may not be the shortest
In the directions interface, the selected route is blue and alternatives are gray; each route shows an estimated travel time. A route with more miles can be selected if its expected traffic makes it faster. Conversely, a slightly slower route may be preferable if it matches a setting such as avoiding toll roads or motorways.

- Estimated travel time: the forecast under the requested departure or arrival conditions.
- Distance: total road length, which may differ substantially between alternatives.
- Current and expected traffic: conditions now and the predicted conditions when you reach each segment.
- Travel mode: driving, walking, cycling, public transport, and other modes have different networks and constraints.
- Timing: a planned departure or arrival time can change the traffic forecast and, for public transport, the available schedules.
- Preferences: options such as avoiding tolls or motorways can remove or downgrade otherwise attractive paths.
The public documentation does not disclose the relative weight of every factor or every tie-breaker used internally.
What you can see and change in the app
Compare routes before starting
- Open Google Maps and enter your destination.
- Choose Directions, then select your travel mode.
- Review the blue route and the gray alternatives. Each route displays its estimated travel time; tap an alternative to inspect or select it.
- Open route options or preferences when available, then choose settings such as avoiding tolls or motorways.
- Check the displayed time again after changing a preference or travel mode, because Maps may select a different path.
Labels and controls can differ by operating system, account, language, region, and feature availability. The current Android directions instructions are maintained in Google Maps Help.
Plan around a departure or arrival time
For supported directions, Maps can estimate a route for a future departure or a desired arrival. Enter the destination, open the directions options, and select the control for Leave at or Arrive by. Set the date and time, then review the resulting route estimates. Google’s cited consumer help limits this planning feature to a single destination and notes that public-transport results also depend on scheduled services.
A planned time does not reserve road capacity or guarantee an arrival. It asks Maps to use the traffic and schedule information available for that time. If the feature is missing, your platform, region, travel mode, or destination may not support it.

Why Google Maps changes your route while you are driving
Traffic information is refreshed during navigation. A crash, closure, weather event, or newly detected slowdown can alter the expected time on the route you started with. Maps may then offer a faster alternative or automatically redirect you, depending on your navigation settings and the difference it calculates.
The change does not necessarily mean the original route was an error. The original estimate was based on information available when you began; the later route reflects a different forecast. A route can also change after you deviate from the planned path, miss a turn, or apply a new avoidance preference.
Live traffic versus historical traffic
Maps uses both, and they solve different parts of the problem:

Google’s developer documentation makes a related distinction for the Routes API: historical-traffic estimates use historical information, while traffic-aware preferences are intended to consider live traffic. Google reported in 2020 that ETA predictions had been consistently accurate for more than 97% of trips. That was a company-reported result describing performance before the DeepMind improvements discussed in the same publication; it is not a current guarantee for an individual journey or every country.

Google and DeepMind also reported up to a 50% decrease in inaccurate ETAs in some locations, including Berlin, Jakarta, São Paulo, Sydney, Tokyo, and Washington, D.C. “Up to” describes the best result among the locations and conditions evaluated, not a universal improvement. These figures belong to the 2020 publications and should not be read as a 2026 accuracy promise.
Exceptional events demonstrate why forecasts can fail. Google reported that worldwide traffic fell by up to 50% when lockdowns began in early 2020. Such a sudden break from normal patterns can make historical baselines less useful until the system observes enough new behavior.
Situations that can make an ETA unreliable
- New incidents: a crash, emergency closure, or roadworks may not be fully reflected yet.
- Rapidly changing congestion: traffic can deteriorate between the time you request directions and the time you reach a segment.
- Rare events: festivals, evacuations, severe weather, and unusual public events do not follow ordinary day-and-time patterns.
- Limited data: a lightly travelled road may provide fewer current signals than a busy arterial.
- Map or schedule changes: a newly altered road layout or public-transport timetable can make older patterns less representative.
- Stops and personal behavior: the displayed driving estimate describes the mapped journey; extra stops, parking searches, breaks, and slowdowns that Maps cannot observe separately can extend the real trip.
Use the estimate as a planning range, especially when the cost of being late is high. Recheck the route shortly before departure and pay attention to warnings during navigation.

What Google knows—and what it does not publish
Google’s public material supports a clear explanation of the inputs: aggregated current conditions, historical traffic, machine-learning forecasts, road and incident factors, and route preferences. It also documents that navigation data can be used to improve real-time traffic and alternative-route suggestions.
It does not provide the complete current route-ranking formula. Public pages do not specify the exact weight assigned to ETA, distance, tolls, road classes, turn complexity, or other internal factors, nor do they list every production model used today. Explanations should therefore distinguish between what users can observe—route times, alternatives, and preference controls—and the internal scoring details that Google has not published.
Practical ways to get a more useful estimate
- Set the correct travel mode. A driving route and a public-transport route use different networks and constraints.
- Choose the intended departure or arrival time. A future-time estimate can differ from an immediate-departure estimate because expected traffic changes.
- Inspect alternatives instead of accepting the first line. Compare time, distance, and visible warnings before starting.
- Apply preferences before you judge the result. Avoiding tolls or motorways can intentionally trade time for a different route characteristic.
- Allow a buffer for high-consequence trips. The ETA is a forecast, not a guarantee, and unusual events can invalidate normal patterns.
- Watch for in-trip updates. A faster-alternative alert reflects newly received information and may be worth accepting when conditions change.
The key takeaway
Google Maps knows an ETA by forecasting the travel time of connected road sections, not by simply reading the speed of traffic at your current location. It blends live, aggregated observations with historical time-of-day patterns, uses machine learning to predict what lies ahead, and compares those predictions across candidate routes. The route you see also depends on timing, travel mode, and preferences. Google has explained the traffic-prediction approach publicly, including a GNN and “Supersegments” in its 2020 technical description, but the complete current route-ranking formula remains undisclosed.
