Google’s agriculture work in India is not a single app that every farmer can download. It is a set of satellite-imagery and machine-learning models, developer APIs and partnerships that help governments and agritech companies map fields, identify crops, detect changes and deliver advisories through services farmers already use.
The two core services are the Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) API, which maps the physical farm landscape, and the Agricultural Monitoring & Event Detection (AMED) API, which adds crop and time-series information. Their documented uses include crop-health monitoring, irrigation and pest advice, land records, climate analysis, agricultural lending and market intelligence. Google reports large deployments in selected Indian states, but coverage and farmer access depend on local partners.
What Google’s agricultural AI actually does
Google’s contribution is data infrastructure. The company processes high-resolution satellite imagery with machine-learning models, then exposes the results through APIs that public agencies, agri-input companies and agritech startups can incorporate into their own systems.

The Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) API identifies field boundaries, water bodies, vegetation boundaries and acreage. That information can support digital land records, resource allocation and precision-agriculture tools. ALU answers questions such as where a field is, how large it is and how its boundaries relate to nearby water or vegetation.

AMED monitors crops and changes
The Agricultural Monitoring & Event Detection (AMED) API adds field-level agricultural information: likely crop type, season, field size, historical agricultural activity and detected events. Google says AMED data is refreshed approximately every 15 days, allowing services to track changing conditions rather than relying on a one-time map.
In practical terms, ALU supplies the map and AMED supplies the agricultural timeline. A service can use both to connect a particular field with a crop, its growing season and a newly detected change, then combine that information with weather, soil or government records before sending advice.

How the model-to-advisory pipeline works
- Observe: Satellite imagery provides repeated views of fields, vegetation and water features.
- Interpret: ALU and AMED models turn those images into field boundaries, acreage, crop information and detected events.
- Combine: A partner platform can add weather observations, soil moisture, pest reports, market data, farmer records or government land information.
- Decide: Agronomists, government programs or application rules convert the combined data into an irrigation, pest, fertilizer, crop-health or timing advisory.
- Deliver: The advice reaches farmers through channels such as SMS, an app, a website or a field officer. Google provides the underlying models; the partner determines the service, language and delivery method.
Indian programs already using the APIs
Krishi DSS
Amnex developed Krishi DSS for India’s Department of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare using ALU and AMED. The platform is described as supporting crop-health monitoring, acreage estimation, irrigation advisories and assessment of climate impacts. It is a government-facing system rather than a universal consumer application.

Gujarat’s Krushi Pragati advisories
Google reports that Amnex integrated the models into Gujarat’s Krushi Pragati platform. In the year described by Google in 2026, the program sent more than 900 million SMS advisories to more than 600,000 farmers covering over 14 million hectares. The messages addressed crop and soil health, pest and disease management and weather observations.

Those figures are Google’s reported program totals, not an independent measurement of yield gains. They demonstrate the reach of an advisory channel, while the agronomic effect still needs to be evaluated separately.
fieldWISE and state projects
Vassar Labs says it plans to integrate ALU and AMED into fieldWISE for state projects that together serve more than one crore Indian farmers. The planned service combines crop, irrigation, pest, fertilizer, market and pricing advisories. “More than one crore” means more than ten million; it describes the projects’ intended or reported service reach, not proof that every farmer has received an AI-generated recommendation.

Credit and climate applications
Sugee.io is integrating ALU information into agricultural-loan origination and AMED into credit monitoring. CEEW is using the models for crop-diversification and climate-data analysis. These uses show that the APIs are not limited to agronomy: the same field evidence can support financial decisions and climate planning, subject to each organization’s own data, eligibility rules and safeguards.
How this relates to India’s government AI services
India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is developing related AI capabilities alongside Google’s work. Its initiatives include Kisan e-Mitra, a multilingual chatbot for PM-KISAN questions; the National Pest Surveillance System, which uses AI and machine learning to detect pest infestations; and crop-health analytics that combine field photographs, satellite data, weather and soil-moisture information, including work on rice and wheat.

A ministry release in 2024 said Kisan e-Mitra was available in Hindi, Tamil, Odia, Bangla and English and had been accessed by more than 21 lakh farmers in two months. The same release described AI applications for advisories, farmer feedback, crop monitoring, yield prediction, pest control and resource optimization. These government services and Google’s APIs are connected parts of India’s broader digital-agriculture ecosystem, not one unified Google product.

Google has described a Gemini Agent Framework concept for agriculture: a multilingual, voice-based interface that could let a farmer ask about weather, seeds, harvest timing, market prices and formal credit. This is an ecosystem direction, not evidence that every Indian farmer currently has access to a universal Gemini farming assistant.
For a farmer, the immediate experience is more likely to be a state service, an SMS campaign, an agritech app or advice from a field officer. Whether that service supports a local language, voice input, a particular crop or a particular district depends on the implementing partner.
What farmers can and cannot expect today

Important limits when judging an AI farming claim
- Coverage: A model can cover a mapped area while the advisory service reaches only registered farmers in selected districts.
- Timing: A roughly 15-day AMED refresh is useful for trend monitoring, but it is not a real-time sensor and may not capture every fast-changing field condition.
- Local validation: Crop classifications and detected events still need to be checked against local crops, planting calendars, weather and agronomic practice.
- Delivery matters: An accurate model has little practical value if farmers lack a suitable language, phone access, connectivity or a trusted channel for acting on the advice.
- Outcome evidence: Large message counts show distribution, not whether recommendations improved yields, reduced pesticide use or increased farm income.
Why the approach matters for Indian agriculture
Field-level mapping gives public agencies a consistent way to estimate acreage and target resources. Repeated monitoring can make irrigation, pest and crop-health programs more timely than annual or manually assembled records. The same infrastructure can help lenders verify agricultural activity, help planners study crop diversification and help state services combine satellite observations with weather and soil information.
Google and ICRISAT describe the work as part of a broader effort to apply AI to dryland agriculture. ICRISAT Deputy Director General for Research & Innovation Dr. Stanford Blade said, “We are excited to partner with Google and bring AI’s potential to the mission of transforming dryland agriculture.” The practical test remains whether each deployed service turns better data into advice that is accurate, understandable and useful for farmers in its target region.
