Google Health can process more than steps from a Fitbit: depending on your device, settings and permissions, data may include activity, sleep, heart metrics, location, information you enter, and data from connected services. Google says it uses this information to provide health features, personalize experiences, improve and secure its services, and send product updates. Its policy says health and wellness data is not used for Google ads.
What Fitbit and Google Health data can include
Google says data may come from a paired Fitbit or Google device, your Google Health account and profile, manual entries, or services you connect directly or through platforms such as Health Connect or Apple Health. The precise mix depends on the device, configuration, service and permissions you grant. (Google Health privacy FAQ)
- Profile and setup: information such as height, weight and sex.
- Activity and wellness: steps, distance, calories burned, active minutes, weight, heart rate, sleep stages and other supported metrics.
- Information you add or connect: manual app entries and information from connected apps or services. If you upload or connect medical records, those may include lab results, clinical notes and health conditions.
- Location: precise location may be collected for selected features when you grant permission; Google also says approximate location may be derived from your IP address.
- App and device information: usage, network and diagnostic information, including app interactions and device or browser details.
When using generative AI features such as Google Health Coach, Google says it collects conversations and related information, including questions, context and responses, and may collect generated insights or summaries. (Google Health privacy FAQ)
What a Fitbit can track depends on the model
Google’s general guidance says all Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices track steps and Active Zone Minutes or active minutes, while other core statistics vary by device. You can also log items in the Google Health app, such as sleep, exercise, water and food intake, weight and menstrual health. An app entry is not the same as a wearable sensor measurement. Google’s device inventory lists the Fitbit Charge 6 as supporting connected and on-device GPS; steps, distance, swimming and cardio fitness (VO2 max); sleep logs, stages and score; stress management score, meditation minutes and EDA scans; and heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV, breathing rate, SpO2 tracking and skin-temperature variation. This list describes Google’s inventory for that model, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every region or configuration. A wearable’s reading is not, by itself, a medical diagnosis. Other devices and app-entered information
Google’s inventory covers trackers, smartwatches and scales, with different capabilities by model. For example, the listed Aria family scales provide measured weight, body-fat percentage and BMI. How Google says it uses Fitbit data
Google says it uses information from paired devices and connected services to help people reach health and fitness goals. Its stated purposes include providing dashboards and trends, personalizing content and AI features, improving algorithms and product performance, troubleshooting safety and reliability issues, sending service notifications and some personalized promotions, and supporting security. Some features are optional. Google identifies cycle health, irregular-rhythm notifications, ECG and medical records as features users can enable or disable, with information about collection and use provided before enabling an optional feature. What Health Coach can access
If you enable Google Health Coach, Google says it can use data from paired devices, your account profile, connected apps, exercise and sleep history, and information you share. It may access health and activity data associated with your account; some categories, including medical records or certain sensor data, may need separate consent to ingest. Coach conversation history has its own controls. Revoking consent for a specific feature or deleting a data category does not automatically remove related information from conversation history; use the conversation-history controls to manage that content. How to review, export or delete your data
Google says much of your information is accessible in the app. You can export data through Google Health Data and Privacy settings, delete selected health-history data, or leave Google Health. Leaving the service deletes associated Google Health data from your Google Account, but does not automatically delete data previously authorized for use by other Google services; manage those services’ settings separately. Google describes health and wellness data retention as continuing until you delete it or leave the service, subject to stated legal and business-interest exceptions for other information. Google Account requirement and Fitbit account transition
Google’s current documentation says Fitbit-account support ended on May 19, 2026, and a Google Account is required to use Google Health. Google says it is the data controller for Google Account users, including people who migrated a Fitbit account. The legacy-user window to download or delete data before Google began processing deletions on July 15, 2026 has passed.
